well. with the amount of $ 500 quite a lot. and if I suggest to choose which altcoin is really good choose who has a lot of community. and also if you still doubt it will develop or not, buy altcoin that had reached softcap.
With your budget, maybe you can allocate to EOS and ADA. Just take a coin that is affordable, so you can get it in large quantities. Nice question but you need to do your research to and know which coin to invest in as we are not expert too but I will advice to stay away from ICOs and find like 5 good alts to invest $100 on each,

In my opinion, for now, I will collect ore EOS or NEO. This is likely the ETH. I'm sure that with the technology offered, the two coins can reach its higher rate in the future. For now, the price hits its low rate. Therefore, in my opinion, we can use this moment to buy EOS or NEO when their prices are still dropped.

I think that you should pay attention to such coins as EOS, OMG, ADA, Ripple. Also investing in Bitcoin and Ethereum would be a good idea, especially in the long run.
