$500 amount of investment in altcoin is very big. You really have to choose the coin you think that will multiply your investment and not lose it. You have to be wise in picking or else you will lose your investment. I suggest you to invest it in multiple coins such as Ethereum, Neo, and Ripple. Include the Bitcoin also.

That is too way big, but if you can handle why not, and as I see you afford to drop that kind of money so why not. Go, just be aware everytime, and monitor all the possibilities that might affect your money because it is too way big. I cannot drop that kind of money especially I am still not good as the old people here in the forum may be I could drop around 150$ but I won't exceed to 400$ or even 500$ I cannot take the regret.
I think you'd better invest in Litecoin if you want to invest long-term, because I believe the price of Litecoin will increase.

Right now, you should invest into the stable high marketcap coins - they are more stable and there si still pretty good chance that they will recover fast. My recommendation are: NEO, XLM and ICX, even ETH is in very nice price-range these days.
