For 18 million dollars? Yeah, I’d have the patience  Cheesy
Besides, it is easier when you realize that by playing the same number over and over you somewhat increase your chances of winning, as there’s a probability that a certain number will hit someday, but if you do different numbers, you risk missing that event. By doing the same all the time, on the other hand, you’ll never miss it. So if you follow this rule, breaking it and choosing another number would simply be irrational.
Yeah you do have the patience and the money to spent on tickets but do you have the time on going to those outlets on buying tickets on everyday basis or just few days of the week?
It might be simple as it looks but when you are a person who just been forced on doing bets because you've seen others been winning then it turns out for this activity to be boring.
Passion is indeed bad when dealing with gambling but you wont really make it that far if you arent really eager or dedicated on what you do have to reach on something thats
 in your mind.
It's not necessarily boring, as some may think. On the contrary, many people, especially the elderly, are people of habits, they may even enjoy such routine. I know quite a few people that buy lottery tickets on a daily basis, but just for fun, they don't even expect to win anything, but the whole process of doing it has become a tradition and it's their way to cheer up.
Though I haven't seen anyone doing the exact same number, that shows real devotion and deserves respect.

I would have thought the game play was conducted weekly which would bring your calculation down to 30(y) X 52(w) X $36 = $ 56,160 (give or take - based on the today dollar values for the three game panels played)

That's right. According to the article, the lottery where that man won is rolling twice a week.

We just don't know if that man is also betting on other lottery tiers making it a daily basis. It makes more cost because he has 3 sets of numbers.

But with this computation, daily or weekly, still an insane amount to spend. That man is even a hardcore gambler compare to the usual gambler.

I'm more shocked that for 30 years, that man rarely missed placing a bet. It becomes a responsibility and a regular routine. I assume that part is exaggerated. When a person says that they are betting on that set of numbers for 30 years, it's not meant on daily basis. He's just doing it for 30 years but the average bet is not consistent.

For example in me, I always bet on the lottery, just a few blocks away from my home, for I think 10 years now but placing a bet maybe twice a month, sometimes more, sometimes less, something like that.

Betting for 30 years and finally winning the lottery is something big,at least he never gave up.But betting on the same numbers over and over is insane to have such big faith in your numbers. My parents also play lottery for too many years now but they werent even close once

36*365*30= $394,200 total amount if the old man spent the same amount every single day in 30 years.

The above calculations are based on the assumption that the game was played daily.

Would you be able to do it? Playing the same numbers over and over again like this? Because I know that I will not have the patience to do this during 30 years.

winning 18 m for 30 year waiting and repeating the same thing. he must really believe in that number. for me I don't really like lottery and maybe I won't be able to be consistent like him. and for his dedication to waiting 30 years to get it all he deserves that prize.

Exactly, I posted the above response to the OP in the same manner.

I can't understand why he only chose that number and became lucky by continuously betting on that same number, even if there are 1 million total lottery tickets then his probability of winning on the same number he has chosen would be less than 0.1%, but he still won it. It's quite impressive.
Not quite impressive but totally exceptional and you would need all luck in the world before you could hit up a jackpot on lottery considering the odds then it is really close to impossible.
What is impressive here is that man do continously play lottery for 30 years which everyone couldnt really make it of that far.
With lots of combinations then you would really boggle up your mind on changing your number combinations because the previous one had lost and this would
be the primary mindset you do have.

It's hard to know precisely because besides prices changes along the years, we also don't know how often the drawings have been happening on the last 30 years. As I see right now drawings happen twice a week, on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 7:29 p.m. So probably this man hasn't been spending money in tickets in a daily basis.

Even though the prize took 30 years to come he is indeed a very lucky man, because it's not that easy anyway to achieve such a big profit. Most gamblers won't be able to hit the jackpot by adopting the same strategy he used. So the rule for gambling keeps the same: just gamble with money you can afford to lose.

I hope the man can finally enjoy his money side by side with his family.

Yes I also check that the draw is done 2 times a week for $1 per ticket, michiganlottery also provides a Favorite number feature so everyone can take the same number which is in his favorite list every day. An interesting feature, imagine if I was at the age of 61 years I might forget the number I choose every day without the feature  Cheesy
Nah, if you do it almost everyday there's no way you can forget that number, not unless you are having a memory loss problem which is a short term memory problem. I'm having a hard time believing if the story was legit or just part of the trick for most news article doing. But if it's true then it's his luck coming after a long years of repeating the same process almost every day.

And 30 years is a very long time to keep spending money hoping to win using with their favorite number(s).

Is it really needing those things to be that relevant? Of course they had been made on where there are number generators or combination which you can choose and make them as favorite but most

likely on matters like these on where numbers you do personally choose is basing up on your life time events or special days or occasion which you can easily remember without needing on

checking your notes about those numbers that you are constantly betting on. Its just really amazing on this mans dedication to hit even its unsure or not guarantee that it would happen
on his lifetime.

Same rule applies with gambling and investments, use amount you will let go. This man got a happy retirement as he can use all this money to live and enjoy a much better life.

Even it took him to wait for 30 years. Those times and money that he spent are all being paid with a lot of perks that he can now enjoy with his love ones.

Just thinking if this same strategy with combining important dates and keep betting on it till it hits the jackpot?  Grin Roll Eyes

Lets do simple math for this lottery winning based on what the old man spend for the lottery ticket ($36).
36*365*30= $394,200 total amount if the old man spent the same amount every single day in 30 years.
Amount he won is $11m so he is in a great profit, but the question is "did he spend $36 only every day during 30 years?"
We do not know the actual fact, but hopefully it is worth his time and money he spent during 30 years waiting and trying.
Knowing that there's inflation and those early days, the ticket's price might not that been much, or if it was then that's high valued ticket before, and probably it's higher these days. But regardless of how much exactly it was before, he's in profit and wins like this is what makes those lottery bettors to keep going with the usual quote of "just one big win, jackpot".

On one of those things that we all wished happened to us, a 61 year old man that has been playing the same numbers for 30 years finally won the lottery and won 18.41 million dollars, he explains that each time he placed the bet he thought about changing the numbers but he decided against doing so each time, there is no explanation of where the numbers come from but I suppose they must mean something, otherwise it would be difficult to believe he could keep playing the same numbers over and over again.

Would you be able to do it? Playing the same numbers over and over again like this? Because I know that I will not have the patience to do this during 30 years.

This kind of patience and resilience can mostly be found in boomers. They are wired hardcore. I'd respectfully say that he was "insane". Because according to Albert Einstien,"Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results". Lol. Congratulations to him.
Obviously he is not insane because he has been able to prove that Albert Einstein was wrong... I don't know if Einstein had really said that and if he was really thinking that way but he should be very bad at gambling if he was betting like that. Because in gambling, it's the opposite : insanity is betting on the same outcome over and over again and expecting same results.  Cheesy

My grandfather is like that and he passed that behavior to my parents everytime they are betting on the lottery.

Nothing wrong with the habit and no effect on RNG. It's just that, that routine is good for others as their own way of attracting luck by sticking and being loyal to their picks as they believed their efforts will soon be rewarded.

That also applied to other picking number games.

I'm not really a fan of betting on a lottery but I do know people around me that used to bet on the same numbers that they inherited from their parents or they simply called "a well-care lottery number" of them. Well,I do believe that there's nothing wrong by doing such thing but I do only concern about how long would they wait to have a chance to win such huge price from lottery. I mean does the money that they could win in future could cover up their daily bet spent on lottery what exactly I mean is that if we would sum up the long time or the number of days multiplied by their daily bet on lottery does their lotto winning money is enough to covered the long time daily spending of a lottery bettors?

Honestly, the lottery habit is still running in my place which is dominated by elderly parents, while young people nowadays bet more at online casinos. And the most unique thing is that the grandparents created their own casino community. I will illustrate how they designed the casino.

Example: 10 parents collect money for a whole month each have to deposit $1 per day, so every month they collect 10 x $30 = $300.

And it should be noted that their casino still uses the conventional system, namely by taking the numbers that have been provided in large bottles at random and the number that comes out is the winner.
The funny thing is, when one parent wins, he will treat all his friends who bet and celebrate the victory.

damn, awesome perseverance and he deserves it. although choosing the same number over and over again for years or decades is not new it is awesome to see some stick with it for a long time. I am sure we all know that lottery bettors have a "lucky" set of numbers they choose every time they bet. doing this kind of strategy doesn't increase your winning in any way but it is amazing to see someone consistently betting on the same number for over 3 decades. I know for myself that I won't be able to do that.
Yeah he does but if someone does the math, I think the money that he have used for lottery could've been much better invested in something because at the current rate of inflation, that man could've made him a millionaire in a safer way since investments go up overtime. To be honest, this isn't close to being replicated but we don't know that, we just believed in the odds that was given us, it's not like the 1 in 1 in 1,000,000 odds is placed at the last place right?

Thirty years times fifty games (assuming a couple of times a year any player missed putting a coupon into a draw).

1500 games played versus a lottery that has a one in a million chance of winning (could be one in fifty million chance depending on how many balls in a game)

Although the game numbers were played fifteen-hundred times, it's still a (one in a million/one in fifty million) chance that your numbers come up.

Initially, I would not have done this as I would be tempted to at least change the combination of my betting numbers maybe like every after week? But this story that you shared is a living testament that sticking to only just one set of numbers can definitely win you the lottery.

Is there someone good at math that can solve the percentage of winning the lottery of paying 30 years worth of lottery tickets? I am so curious as to how the numbers are but regardless, I wish but nothing but the best to the guy who won! At least, he's already 61 so he could enjoy his retirement before the mandatory 65-year old retirement age.
