I really like this story and i think it is cool that he sticked to his favorite numbers for such a long time and that he was rewarded for that finally, even though i am pretty sure that he would have wished to win the lottery while he was still young. He is still not that old though and has still plenty of time to spend that 18 Million $ and maybe it is even better for him that he did not win this huge amount of money when he was still a young man because he probably would have spent all of it already by now for fast cars and jewelry. I have not played lottery for a long time but back then when i did i always picked different numbers. I don't really think that it your chances are changing whether or not you are playing with the same numbers all the time or stay with the same ones.

every time I install the lottery I always use a new number. I find it very difficult to stick to lottery numbers and put them up for years

I know few people who have the same numbers when playing lotto, its a combination of the special dates of their loved ones (e.g birthdays, anniversary etc.) unfortunately they're not lucky yet to win in lottery. Well for me I prefer random numbers, sometimes I chose the numbers I saw in my dream though it sounds weird.

Well the idea of annuity payments are not bad to secure the future but I want to enjoy my earnings so I prefer the lump sum prize even the amount was lessen because of the tax (and its quite huge). Given the age of the lottery winner, its a good decision for him to get his prize as one time payment since he is not young plus we'll never know what lies ahead, life is short so enjoy the present.

In a relationship, loyal people are very hard to find.
In gambling, gamblers who are loyal to their number especially in lottery are very hard to find.

I can't imagine myself doing that thing. Being loyal to a set of numbers for 2 decades is just insane. I'm not betting too much on lotteries or other gambling that has numbers in it but if I'm betting then I will not pick on a specific set of numbers and will be loyal to it for a long period of time. damn, awesome perseverance and he deserves it. although choosing the same number over and over again for years or decades is not new it is awesome to see some stick with it for a long time. I am sure we all know that lottery bettors have a "lucky" set of numbers they choose every time they bet. doing this kind of strategy doesn't increase your winning in any way but it is amazing to see someone consistently betting on the same number for over 3 decades. I know for myself that I won't be able to do that.

This kind of holding the number is just common because sometimes when you didn't take a hold on that number that time is the one who show up to the roll of the lottery this is the reason why take care of their numbers. Someone knew how to never give up it seems. Also he was so dedicated to those numbers for so many years and in the end it payed back but I'm sure there are lots and lots of people who are betting the same numbers for more than 20 years so it's still luck. Now , I hope he will retire in peace and live his life without playing the lottery again.

winning 18 m for 30 year waiting and repeating the same thing. he must really believe in that number. for me I don't really like lottery and maybe I won't be able to be consistent like him. and for his dedication to waiting 30 years to get it all he deserves that prize.

Well done for his patience and perseverance.I am pretty sure I could not do it,I played a few months in Freebitco.in lottery tickets every week bought a lot of them but did not won anything and I was upset and quit.This guy had the patience and perseverance to play the same number for 30 years and this is something not many people can do so big congrats to him.

It'd be interesting to see if there had been any studies on the ration of age to pay out - the younger, the more likely to receive installments, or, the older, taking a one off payment and heading for the Bahama's for some sex and drugs and rock and roll...

Then again, if you were younger and could take a massive cash-out, then invest heavily in high paying ways, the long term payouts might be worth it compared to the tax hit you'd have to take.

If the winner is young he can choose to get paid on an installment basis so he can manage the funds in the long term but if the winner is already in his 60 the right decision is to receive it lumpsum so he can do whatever he wants to do on the remaining years left for him and besides he is already mature and can handle huge money responsibly.

The dedication of this man is insane. There should have been quite a lof of "what ifs" in his mind every time he tried to play the same lot, and seeing as he committed to it till he won shows how much he ignores said what ifs. I myself would never make it ngl, I'm pretty indecisive myself after all.

This is a good tale to our younger generation, perseverance and consistency pays...it might delay to come but trust the process because once it comes it rewarding. it's just unfortunate this reward came through for the 61 year old when his Youthful days are over but am certain it will go a long way probably support his family here and there.

before , i play the lottery with random numbers but now i have this habit of sticking to a certain number until i hit them all and each of the numbers i pick have a meaning , e.g they can be compose of my birth date , birth year , etc...
on the story the guy waited for 30 years until he finally win wow but what about his winnings , did he still got something if he minus his expense in the past 30 year ? but i guess that doesnt matter anymore but what important is he achieved something memorable .

reminds me of my grandfather , When i was a Secondary school he give me task to make a bet for Him since the lottery outlet is near my school and He presented me to the operator so will allow me to bet for Him.

The combination of number is all His Tax payers number being rambled , but until he died ? never that he made winning the jackpot lol.

The probability of hitting the lottery jackpot playing the same numbers after 20 years is approximately 0, which is the same probability of hitting the jackpot if you change the numbers each time. What you say are urban legends believed by people who do not understand mathematics.

When I play the lottery, I prefer to change the numbers each time and randomly, because as I explained above, the probability of winning is the same. There are no numbers that give you more probability of winning than others. On the other hand, I have heard cases of people who always played the same combination and the week they didn't play because they forgot, or changed the numbers, those numbers (that they didn't play that week) were the jackpot.

Anyway, the probability of the latter happening to you is also minuscule, but I prefer to stay calm doing the random combination, so if I lose the lottery ticket or something I can't regret thinking that I would have gotten the prize.

If there's an informant that has advised me to play same numbers because of the certainty of winning, i may consider it, but on my own without any heads up, i don't think i can even play same numbers for a year without finding the whole process and gambling experience boring.
