While I am very happy for him, it really needs to be put into the context that there will be hundreds of thousands, if not millions of people who do the same thing throughout their life and will never come close to winning the jackpot. You really have just as much chance of winning by picking a random set of numbers each week, because each draw is absolutely independent of every other draw that has taken place. It would be interesting to see how much he would have been sitting on if he decided to invest that small amount consistently over time - obviously nowhere near the jackpot but I've a feeling he would have made tens of thousands of dollars instead.

You're right it's just a classic case of survivorship bias. If we were able to count the number of people doing the same thing like him during 20 years and not winning the jackpot prize we would certainly find the same proportion of losers as in people changing their lottery numbers every time.

If he do bought tickets once per day in all days on that 30 years time then I could say that it did really pays off and most likely with those number combinations is personally been choosed neither its an anniversary or combinations of birthdays or totally just personal point of hands and stick with it.

It is really hard to maintain numbers which had been consecutively lost up and imagine 30 years of betting isn't something that people could able to reach off and with due to frustration then
even having 1 month straight loss would already be hard thing. How much more on 30 years?

My father had the same belief or even most of my relatives when it comes to lotto. Even got a jackpot from swertres after so many tries though its not that big, but still it got the jackpot and win.
There are some instances also that he (my father) always bet the same number over and over again until one day he misses to bet and then it shows as the jackpot's lucky numbers and he regrets it.

For sure, those numbers means something to him, just like the rest of us who bet on our birthdays, our lucky numbers etc..

To be honest, this strategy is very difficult and it is not easy to just hold on to one number for a long time, unless all the old man does is make a promise to his wife before he dies. Because in lottery, lucky numbers are quite classic.
Meanwhile, when we put numbers on the lottery, it is not enough to bet once or twice with different numbers, but randomize the numbers at each point.

If it was me I would have changed numbers a couple of times and definitely will not repeat a certain number twice. I believe something must have motivated him to keep back that number up till his 61years.
