Correct me if I'm wrong but based on the bitcoin magazine article the BFL hardware is running 500Mhz at 60 Ghash. I've already been planing on 80-90Ghash once the firmware and improved cooling comes in to play. As for life expectancy it only has to take me to the next gen which BFL will hopefully have an upgrade program.

Thanks for he RPi links I just got mine. Now if I only had an ASIC...

i thought power use doesn't scale linearly like that?

It shouldn't as far as I know. But BFL has stated 1 watt per GH. So there you go? (??)

What version of RPI do you have?

256 Mb RAM one, first available on preorder, the most crappy one.

I drive around 80 FPGAs from a Rasp Pi, you need to do this (bridge polyfuses and add low ESR[ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Equivalent_series_resistance] cap to /Vdd - Vss/ output USB port [nichicon/os-con]:

Since I did that hack everything went smooth and cool, before it was a nightmare.

HOLY CRAP! bASIC is now $14.84/Gh vs BFL's $21.65/Gh! BFL had better ship first or Tom will eat their lunch.

No word if their power consumption is competitive.

Other specs/stats:
The expected power consumption remains roughly as anticipated at 80 - 120 watts per unit.  Actual measured power consumption will be released as soon as possible.

If this is true then I think 72Gh@120w is clearly competitive.
If they (BFL) go to 72, they will start coming dangerously close to the red zone. (Easy Heat Death for their chips. They stated before when they go to 60GH/s they can have up to 25% higher clocks)

So in other words if your time has any sorta value just buy a 150 dollar low power computer....

It costs around 35 usd. Then, it has a cult follow rivaling with top hardware - means free fixes, and most important, its less than 5% of my computing power, rather an experiment.. Cheesy

I got my son one of those mini PC's Foxconn. It has a tiny footprint and uses almost no power. Would be great for a miner setup.

raspberry pi ftw  Grin

Why would I purchase a raspberry pi when I already have the Foxconn? Plus I heard the pi has issues with the USB ports.

Real-life satire at its best. LOL.

BFL shipping in
October (for sure!)
November (for sure!)
December (maybe?)

What he really wanted to say: "... our shipping timeline is the biggest joke ever" Wink

He said he won't respond, but called it "questionable"? Kinda sounds like a response...however brief. Inaba is usually much better behaved in his BFL_Josh costume. A snipe at the integrity of the competition's press releases is fascinating. Smiley

Like I said in an earlier post I think BFL's marketing was very clever for saying October for a ship date. Letting people think they would be mining with ASIC units well before the competition. Grabbing the majority of the pre-orders. Personally I believe they are on their shipping timeline.....they just duped us all into believing it would be October.

Oh you left out the part where he talks about Tom "finding a source of Pegasus blood... it's 2x the awesome as Unicorn Blood."

I don't really want to say anything negative about the bASIC at this point... Tom is already apparently in a really bad spot and there is no sense pouring gas on that fire. We haven't decided specifically which way we want to make things even up with competitors products yet, but we have a lot of options and we will match competitors products that actually ship. We will not leave BFL customers behind the curve when it comes to hardware. I'd say there's a good chance we will be shipping before bASIC at this point.

I'm trying to figure out how you can increase the chip count by at least 25% and still maintain the same already incredible power efficiency for a 90nm product. The bASIC is truly a magical device. Maybe Tom found a source of Pegasus blood... it's 2x the awesome as Unicorn Blood.

Personally, I can't wait to see what actually comes out of the bowels of the bASIC manufacturing plant, but I bet it's going to be, at the very least, quite interesting.

I believe it is possible due them using such a smaller process size. Possible, maybe unlikely.. but we'll have to wait and see.

Which process size does BFL use?

Was 65nm and was full custom asic, isnt so?

The numbers might not lie, but BFL does. Does anyone seriously believe their entire SC product line will consume precisely 1w of power to produce 1Gh? They weren't even close last time they rolled out a product with very optimistic power consumption specs.

1. Go with BFL (~$8000 invested)
    a. Get 360 Gh
    b. Get my ASICs in January/February
    c. Consume 360 Watts ($23.33/mo @ .09)
    d. Estimated profit at 10x difficulty: $1952.32/mo
    e. Estimated profit at 20x difficulty: $964.32/mo
    f.  Estimated profit at 30x difficulty: $634.99/mo
    g. Estimated profit at 40x difficulty: $470.33/mo
    h. Estimated profit at 50x difficulty: $371.53/mo
    i.  Estimated profit at 60x difficulty: $305.66/mo

2. Go with Tom (~$8560 invested)
    a. Get 576 Gh
    b. Get my ASICs in January/February
    c. Consume 960 Watts ($62.21/mo @ .09)
    d. Estimated profit at 10x difficulty: $3098.46/mo
    e. Estimated profit at 20x difficulty: $1517.67/mo
     f. Estimated profit at 30x difficulty: $990.74/mo
    g. Estimated profit at 40x difficulty: $727.28/mo
    h. Estimated profit at 50x difficulty: $569.20/mo
    i.  Estimated profit at 60x difficulty: $463.81/mo

This is no longer a hard decision.  The numbers don't lie.

I'll give BFL a week to respond and increase speeds or give a small refund, or I'm getting a full refund ASAP. Not only because of the new speed developments at BTCFPGA, but because I can't trust BFL whether they will actually ship when they say they are and not suffer further delays.

I will be eating Ramen noodles if I don't get my ASICs in Jan/Feb, I cannot afford for shipping to be delayed any more.

have they fixed the USB issue that people are suggesting would impede using Pi w/ ASICs? Obviously a $50 alternative would be preferable to $150, but only if it works.
It would be nice if they have. I was looking at running an i.MX25 dev kit I have kicking around, but I'd like to try running them on a Pi as well.
