Actually the thing is bitcoin still stands a chance to overcome the alts. have you ever read or heard about the BTC dominance in the CMC or somewhere? Do you know how much it is ! Its around 37% dominance , and I am sure its earned one not just coming out of imagination.
Thats the best thing that can explain the whole scenario. So I am pretty sure altcoin will be in the second position all the time.
Also altcoin are things, which come and go all the time leaving behind those few which are at the top! But surely they cant take down the BTC at all.
while you are right in saying bitcoin earned its dominance and rank and superior than altcoins , but it is true only if we rank them in terms of reliability and popularity .
but if we rank them in terms of profitability and scope then altcoins will win , not all alts , but there are many alts which do not dominate even 1% of total marketcap and best projects , for example Fusion , it marketcap is just 0.1% of total market cap , so investment in this coin will give me much more return than btc which already dominate 40% mcap .

Altcoin depends on Bitcoin and market prices are controlled by the price of Bitcoin, so it's impossible for Altcoin to be better than Bitcoin. yes if the price of Bitcoin goes down then all other coin prices also go down. 
Both Bitcoin and Altcoins have different positive and negative features or things. The Bitcoin is the most trusted. It has great value. But the transaction fee is expensive and it is slow transaction. On the other hand, the altcoins have more various concepts and cheaper transaction fees. There may be the positive and negative sides. So, I cannot determine which is better.

I was interested in this topic because it seemed rather untrue. Then I noticed that it was for May of this year! Bitcoin holders can finally start to rejoice. At the start of my crypto journey I didn't see Bitcoin as something that was going to stick around, however that view has been changed, and I now understand the necessity of Bitcoin to the crypto ecosystem. Grandpa isn't going anywhere.
