There is a lot of misinformation surrounding Chipmixer and the owner/operator but what data was on the 7TB disk remains the biggest question. Like you I suppose it could consist of nodes, backups, or the forensics image of the whole drive/s including free space rather than simply backing up all transactions as even then it would be hard to believe 7TB of disk space would have been taken up on it.

When was the bc1 key transition announced?PS. 7TB can be either nodes, backups, or the forensics image of the whole drive/s including free space.

Of course, we can't rule out the possibility that someone created their own chips, but my guess is the older keys weren't compromised.

When was the bc1 key transition announced?
To be clear, you suggest that the LE did not move funds on addresses starting with "1" but only in "bc1". What about addresses starting with "3", did chip mixer ever had these?

Yes, all were moved, including the ones starting with 1, 3,  etc.... it's funny how someone will be such an idiot to keep private keys online! what if an hacker would had come and steal all the coins? 49 millions!
Most likely it was an LE honey trap. Now they will most likely go to coinbase and recover even more... steal all the coins even from honest people , mixing everyone together!

I'll also state what i said in another thread:

Fact is: chipmixer lied in it's claims to delete private keys.
I don't know how can anyone defend them after it was made clear by users. I suspect it's about the signature campaign, so ukhm.. corruption or Stockholm syndrome?
Therefore it is justified to assume that chip mixer ran from the very beginning as private honeypot for the owner and gathered all kinds of information.

Based on what was stated by LE - what kind of high-profile actors moved money through chipmixer, I don't think the vietnamese guy will be ever found alive, best case for him is to surrender to LE
Other people and some eastern 3 letter agencies might be looking for him to find out what the truth was. Not only law enforcement.
He not only f*** himself but also other people. Fortunately in many countries using such obfuscation services or receiving funds from them is not making you guilty of anything.

If the @Chipmixer guy had at least some honor, he'd post here what was stored so it's clear for all the people using his toy.
The fact that he's hiding, does not mean he has no access to the internet or that he is not watching our posts.

Maybe the disk size hosting package was 7TB and there was nominal size data on it after the OS and updates were added and the vast majority of the 7TB was empty disk space. It is possible it was something completely different, we simply do not know. All I know is that there is no need for anybody to believe the owner of Chipmixer would not have backed up keys or mixed coin data.

Have you ever thought that these 7TB could refer to contents of other projects that the owner of ChipMixer had?

But even if it does, do you think that in 10 years of running the mixer, it would generate 7TB of transaction logs? I honestly have serious doubts, just look at the size of the Bitcoin blockchain, which is around 500GB. Of course, that doesn't mean that in the middle of those 7TB there are some logs.

**In BTC since 2013**
There are several possible scenarios but what is in the 7TB data is one of the missing pieces. Would it really be impossible to presume the owner of Chipmixer decided to keep a log of every single transaction that he facilitated? Just because he said he did not back up any data or store any keys does not mean he was true to his word.

Self-Custody is a right. Say no to"Non-custodial"
I remember someone who recommended to always keep a rather large stack of BTC as CM vouchers (to be fair: not the recommended usage of ChipMixer) from which you can get the amount you need, whenever you have to do a payment. I'll look up later who that was; I'd be interested if he was affected, too, for instance.

That's an interesting concept, and I doubt that I disagree.

It's like keeping a personal bug out bag.. in cyberspace.. so you may well be able to access it from anywhere in the world if "shit-hits-the-fan."

I feel like I am not sufficiently knowledgeable enough to know how keeping it on chipmixer would provide a whole hell-of-a-lot of advantages as compared to just having some ways in which back up seeds are kept that might have a certain value on them.

It's like maybe a certain amount for fleeing and bribing folks in order to get to some escape location.. but how much would that be? $10k to $100k?

or maybe if any of us might presume that the total BTC stash would be larger than the bug-out bag amount, then the total stash would still be retrievable, but just might take longer to access... so maybe the temporary stash would be enough to survive for 1-6 months while transitioning to a safer place.. but if any of us might expect that we could end up being detained (whether by legal means or maybe by less than scrupulous individuals/authorities), then tokens might come in handy for something like that.. and surely if there might be bribing of officials (or bribing of thugs, depending on definitions of "what is a thug?") then the amounts available might need to be larger and even some plausible deniability that might suggest "that's everything I got... really, I am not lying.. this time.."..

I suppose that we could come up with scenarios in which there are several "officials" that might need to be bribed, or even some abilities to bribe for escape routes - think about SBF considering ways to bribe folks to be able to remove his electronic monitor.. and not even trying to suggest that it is good to conceive of ways to "break the law".. but there could be scenarios in which there is debate about "who are the good guys" and "who are the bad guys" and also what measures might be taken in order to attempt to "remain free," "not get tortured" or other wised maimed or killed... .. and even stages in which some money is due at various points of "the escape."   Probably, we are not really supposed to be talking about various methodologies that might end up happening in a "fugitive from the law." kind of a scenario, even though a "fugitive from those 'other bad guys' situation" would be more acceptable.  I suppose... a bug-out bag already presumes some level of questioning who are the good guys and who are the bad guys, I suppose.

We simply do not know what the owner of Chipmixer was doing with any data that passed through his servers but at worst case scenario he kept a log of almost everything.

What if they were generating private keys from a single seed stored on their server, not necessarily keeping them one by one on purpose? Maybe they actually did delete the sessions but weren't smart enough to not generate them from a single (kept) key? The police could then just generate as many keys as they can with that one seed on the server...? Tongue

Last time when the police seized a DNM, they actually spent some time as a MITM collecting information and they announced that publicly. Maybe if CM kept logs they would also tell the public about it?

I'd like to know if there are still funded chips out there.
It took a while to run the data. I checked all addresses that currently hold 0.128 BTC using these criteria.
That resulted in the following addresses:

The ones starting with "3" have never been chips, so you can ignore them.

I didn't check all of those addresses, but none of the bc1-addresses I checked look like chips. So it could be all Bech32-keys were swept.
From the older adddresses (starting with 1), many look like they're chips:

Of course, we can't rule out the possibility that someone created their own chips, but my guess is the older keys weren't compromised.

I've read about Chipmixer's end. Terrabytes of data could've saved chip mix history. Did they use paypal for hosting ?

Yeah , and the idiot from Vietnam keeping logs , and keys on an online , uncrypted server since 2017 was paying the server bill using his own credit card...

not your keys, not your coins!
I don't like that German Police just steal ... without having proof we did something illegal,  hiding our original bitcoin wallet.
If they could just steal all our not spent money, will they go to big exchanges and take our money from there, claming we need to proove the funds were bought in good faith , or other non sense?
Absolutely. I guess the difference to an exchange (not all of them are 'created equal', but if they are registered banks) is that customer's funds in a bank account are 'guaranteed' to a certain limit of a few thousand $ / €.
Anything below that limit cannot be seized if the bank goes bankrupt, for instance; they have to somehow give you access to those funds sooner or later (it doesn't work that well in reality, but that's the theory).

In the case of ChipMixer, while not being a lawyer, it is likely that anything under control of ChipMixer (i.e. unspent funds) can be seized, because it legally still belongs to ChipMixer.

Just a thought: even if they kept logs, it could include fake data. Misinformation to make it look one way but still hide something else.
Plausible deniability, in a way. I like it. Just like it is possible ChipMixer was operated by more than 1 person. But law enforcement like it if they find a stash of data & keys, a face and can just be done with it.
Evidence of absence and all that...

Seems it was just some hot wallets by chipmixer and not the private keys of user interactions because then it would have been a lot more txs.
Several Bitcointalk users have already confirmed their funds were swept. I'm surprised there isn't much more turmoil about it though. I'd like to know if there are still funded chips out there.
That is correct.

The Bitcoin that was confiscated went here

Also some stuff is hard to believe. Like the Hosting was bought by the suspect with his real, actual paypal account? I dont believe it Cheesy

Not sure why there was Terrabytes of data.Maybe they just want to spread fear & panic.  Or maybe there was just some other stuff on the (shared) server and they just took it all. I mean if they really can see any mix ever done on Chipmixer we would probably have seen some big busts already. And if they really had all this data, they surely would not put this in a press release but hide it so they can first take down all the big money launderers who used the service like the big hacks, ransom stuff and darknet marketplaces and whatnot.

I don't think there's any more confusion, because many who use mixers don't publicly admit that they do. Perhaps in anticipation of increasing your privacy. And some may be afraid that the authorities are after who used the mix, and in that sense they prefer not to mention anything.

Seems it was just some hot wallets by chipmixer and not the private keys of user interactions because then it would have been a lot more txs.

Also some stuff is hard to believe. Like the Hosting was bought by the suspect with his real, actual paypal account? I dont believe it Cheesy

Please read the whole indictment, it's not as simple as "he paid with his real PayPal account". One of his old associated PayPal accounts received money from multiple people and one sender was unusual.. that was his real paypal acc. They dug very deep.

There's more evidence present in the indictment.  The simple claim of sending money to someone's paypal account, which is associated with chip mixer might not be enough to have him sentenced.
This proves nothing, especially if the guy offered some PP -> BTC service that was misused by a shady customer.

They also traced TOR domain somehow to the real location where all backend stuff was present.
I suspect the method used to find the backend server behind TOR, might be related to the BTC node not running through TOR, but only the website. You can find out which node broadcasted the transaction first somehow, no?

Actually, all of those transactions have 195-197 inputs.

Take for example: https://www.blockchain.com/explorer/transactions/btc/b6b9f2e1875502f3d842fa548e18d2258efd9522b77ac0a9176b6234d546d7f4

You can see lots of chips being spent there (0.016, 0.032, 0.256...). The police knows how to save on fees by making batch payments. Tongue

What will stop them now following this transaction ,and trying to get money back from coinbase, circle, etc?  Because they can easy take it, and most people won't be able to pay 5000 - 15 000$ for a lawyer to maybe get back their 3000$, or 10 000$
if it requires an advocacy fee of more than the amount then there is no one who will appeal for their fund. And in this case, all the fund will be lost who has a lower fund than the fee of a lawyer for their advocacy. But still, I think few may appeal as there is a chance to get more than the original amount if won on jurisdiction.

Guys...any explaination for this  ?

I see that they moved funds that were generated in 2019 !!!! also ...  funny! that's their old system , on Legacy bitcoin network not seg network!

examples:

https://www.blockchain.com/explorer/addresses/btc/1BN93SAJmNtk67ev6kLPzek8FtBZDRfbdh

https://www.blockchain.com/explorer/addresses/btc/1JFG1oj9HtgMJ2YEg3E3qn5wBvPaaWqpHo

i dont mind much because i never used CM anyways but this is a good hint that they probably have a full backend log of all private keys, in that case we can at least be sure of a backup from 2019+

Chipmixer probably didnt keep its promises regarding of destroying the session after 7 days with a full private key wipe.

However, if a future invastigation will be made, its really hard to trace transactions to its final destination and reveal its real purporse, because every jurisdiction has limited ressources to even make onchain analysis and if so, they will most likely pass the small ones and try to focus on the big transfers.

it can hit some users maybe in the next years, if any logs or storage of users data are still kept in the destination services like : exchangers, Paid services in any kind of branch ( billings, casino etc ).

Most of them especially in EU are kept of between 5-7 years of the LAST transaction made in that financial year.

finally some topic to discuss about beside those typical bull and bear market  Cheesy

They can go to circle.com and say "give us 500 bitcoins from this transactions" ...boom!
