I don't think the risk is huge compared to the volume on Purse now. They wouldn't be able to afford protection policies like this if they have to pay out often. For those interested here's the text of their new policy:

Our commitment to Trust & Security

Purse’s $10,000 Spender Guarantee
For ultimate peace of mind, we protect your purchases. Every single purchase.

A few weeks ago, the home of a user named vnnkl was searched by authorities as a result of a purchase he made on Purse 6 months ago. Through an internal investigation, we discovered that the counterparty’s activity originated from a hacked computer of another German resident. To vnnkl, we are truly apologetic and have offered to compensate lawyer fees and any other expenses related to the incident.

In the past year, we successfully transacted over 10,000 items, and 4 transactions went awry. 3 transactions involved gift card reversals which we promptly refunded. In this case, a refund alone did not suffice.

We want to make this right, and on January 7, we will implement a $10,000 Purse Guarantee protecting users from any costs related to purchasing items through our website. We will extend this program to vnnkl or any other use who happens to report an incident for past purchases.

In addition, we are doubling down on support.

  4x Customer Support Team
We doubled our Customer Support team in December, and we will be doubling again by March.

  Contact the CEO
If you can’t get a hold of anyone or want to contact the CEO, email [email protected].

We also added several safety-related features to strengthen trust and confidence in our community.

  Purse Guarantee
Starting January 7th, when a spender purchases items from Purse, their purchases will be covered for any damages or costs resulting form the purchase up to $10,000 with our Purse Guarantee. This program will apply retroactively to any spenders who may report any damages related to Purse.

  Limits & Verification
In our Black Friday release, we introduced a gamification engine that limits new and unverified buyers. Buyers can improve limits with successful transactions, social verification, and phone verification.

  Fraud Prevention
We incorporated an algorithm that detects suspicious buyers and requests verification before they’re able to make purchases.

   Customized Trust Settings
In the near future, we’ll incorporate features to allow spenders to limit buyers based on their levels.

I'm wondering what happens if someone scams Amazon then it comes back on you because you received the product. So lets say someone uses a stolen credit card to order off Amazon. You receive the product and everything seems OK. They get the BTC and disappear. Then later the black helicopters show up and raid your house (you know what I mean, Wink). There would be no way to catch the actual scammer.

So yeah, you're getting a discount but you're also taking a huge risk and not just risk of losing BTC, but legal risk of being charged with fraud.

And now:

Yeah, I mean I understand this is a noble and good cause but there are way too many crooks out there. Even $10k is not worth the risk of my house getting torn apart in the US. I mean it could literally ruin my life for months if not years as I'm tied up in legal bullshit. Is that risk worth the couple % savings? Not in my book.

Yep, fairly common. When a buyer "accepts" your order, they then need to follow through at Amazon and actually buy the item in Amazon's system. If they don't do that (I think Purse has a 1 hour time limit), then it reverts back so someone else can make the purchase of your item. Sometimes this will happen a couple times, for whatever reason, before someone follows through.

Sometimes it's just people who are curious and trying to figure out how things work from the buyer perspective. Or someone may try to buy an item that is priced in a foreign currency, and then realize they can't complete the purchase due to restrictions with their credit card in the foreign currency, etc. (I ran into that myself.)

Thanks I'll keep waiting for a bit then. Are there any listings on Amazon that are not compatible - i.e. item not being shipped directly from Amazon?
Well, I just discovered the hard way that you can't buy Kindle books through the service. And I also learned the hard way not to buy Amazon gift cards, as Amazon has a habit of canceling them without warning. But I've had no problems buying 3rd party gift cards or other 3rd party items using Purse.

hi

i have placed my first order yesterday, it had changed to 'buyer accepted' this evening, but has now reverted back to 'waiting for buyer status' - is this normal? is everything ok?

thanks

The new fees make it fairly pointless in trying to get more than a 30% discount.

I mean $123 for connecting a buyer and seller seems quite high, unless they want to use that money to somehow incentivise buyers.

Legendary Escrow Service - Tip Jar in Profile

Long time user of purse.io, love the site, but I don't understand the new discount/fee structure.

Example: A wishlist with a retail total of : $854.75

10% discount : Purse fee: $8.55 - Total Savings $75.93, USD $777.82 (true discount 9%)
20% discount : Purse fee: $16.65 - Total Savings $154.30 - USD $700.45 (true discount 18%)
30% discount : Purse fee: $32.43 - Total Savings $224.00 - USD $630.75 (true discount 26%)
40% discount : Purse fee: $63.16 - Total Savings $278.74 - USD $576.01 (true discount 33%)
50% discount : Purse fee: $123.01 - Total Savings $304.37 - USD $550.38 (true discount 36%)

Purse.io increases its fee, making the resultant discount not at all what it lists.. the 50% discount is actually a 36% discount... I'm all for them making a fee, but the ramp I don't understand...

I dont understand this too. I mean the first 3 are around 10% fee on the discount, which sounds ok. But 50% has a fee of 30% on the discount, which sounds pretty much to me.

Not to spam the thread, but I am loving Purse.  My 15% discount order got taken quickly and went smoothly.
It makes me worry less about the price of bitcoin falling when I can spend them to get a 15% discount, it takes the edge off the losses at least!

I noticed a few small problems:

I made a second wishlish before my second was delivered.  When the first order arrived, it wanted me to confirm that the stuff on my second wishlist had arrived!  I had to delete my 2nd wishlist and re-make the first, then confirm the order (I was worried I would be incorrectly debited otherwise).
Also there is no live price update when you change the discount %.

Otherwise I really like the concept, and I like actually using bitcoins instead of saving them.

Anyone else still having trouble getting in? I'm able to log in from home but not my work laptop (uses IE 10). I just get the blue bar across the top with no text when I click the Login link. It's been this way at least a week.

UPDATE: Still having trouble. The only difference now is I get some funny circular logo in the middle of the screen with the blue bar. I also had trouble logging in from home last night; the main Login link didn't work, but trying on of the links if you scroll down the first page got me to a registration page that had a link to a working login page.

I'd think Christmas would be the wrong time to be messing with the interface, personally. I also notice I can't sort by nation/currency in the Buy list, and I'm limited to $100 in BTC purchases suddenly. Last August I made a ~$550 BTC purchase, so that's a big step in the wrong direction. And while I'm griping/questioning, when I posted a wishlist I notice it keeps rounding my discount to the nearest % value (i.e., 23% instead of the 22.8% that I had entered), which is also a step backwards.

I love the service Purse has been offering, just want to be able to log in and use it like I used to.

Just deposited $20 into this. Anyone knows how long until the funds show up in my account?
You mean in Bitcoin?  Mine showed up after 5 minutes.
Otherwise if you mean cash, you have to buy something to get your bitcoin.

My 13.5€ order has been there for days now, I was getting all excited about being able to frequently buy with Bitcoin, I guess that day hasn't arrived yet..

I have had a 15€ order waiting for a couple of days on Purse.io.
I'm not sure I fully get the concept, but if I get to spend Bitcoins and get a discount, it sounds good to me.

It sounds like just after Christmas would be a good time to use Purse due to gift vouchers, did anyone do this last year?

Looks like Purse is back up! But I can't find a way to filter the orders by nation/fiat currency, which is pretty important for buyers. Hopefully that comes back in the next upgrade.

Still down... now the Login link brings up https://app.purse.io/ but just as a (pretty much) blank page. Well, a bit of text shows up if you hit View Source on it, but it's clearly not working. Are there any tweets or anything to indicate what's wrong and ETA on fixing it? Can anyone from Purse comment here?
