I think a more interesting approach would be dividing the pool equally among anyone actively "mining" for the reward at the point in time it is discovered.  This would ensure people with limited hardware capabilities could participate in something that would ultimately yield a reward and wouldn't be a completely frivolous waste of time and resources for everyone involved with the exception of a single individual.  Rather than a competition, it would be something the community could share in excitement over which could potentially spill over into spread.

Hmm. Interesting. Groups of nodes could listen to each other and coordinate a search. Its sort of a way to get people to run nodes and keep them on. Possibly, a way to give out rewards on a regular basis, like a mining equivalent for running nodes with correctly configured ports.

However, GPU and ASICs would kill that approach as well, in the end, unless you could tie nodes to the search process:

A small treasure (well, 0.25btc) is sitting out there in an address waiting to be found.

Looks like going big, possibly with monthly payouts on easier addresses, is the way to go.

Awesome! Are you working on implementing that into the wallet?

Not at the moment, but it's part of my plan to even put a GPU miner inside the wallet. (current CPU miner is a joke, just a relic from the past, maybe useful for testnet wallet versions)

I could do with some help on getting the wording right for the r/dogecoin pilot.

Cheers.

So could someone make a GPU miner and "cheat" to win?
If so, then I guess we need to make one first so everyone has a fair chance.

Yes, that would be possible without problem.

The VanityGen inside the spread-wallet is 100% based on the original vangen (by samr7): https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/vanitygen-vanity-bitcoin-address-generatorminer-v022-25804
I had to tweak and change quite a few things to make it work within the wallet and with SPR addresses, but it should be very easy for even a beginner to create a standalone GPU vangen for SPR.

And it should be quite rewarding:

on an AMD 8-core 4Ghz I get about 1.2 M Keys/s,

And an example for GPU, based on the calculation formulas mentioned here: https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/vanitygen-vanity-bitcoin-address-generatorminer-v022-25804
an AMD HD 6970 with 1536 Stream Processors and 880 MHz, should be able to hash about 18 M Keys/s, ...

so on average a GPU should work 10-20 times better than CPU, maybe even twice that.

Last time I tried to GPU vanity mine, my whole card broke after "Compiling Kernel" or something.
Even after I got it RMA'd it still has issues mining normal algos like X11. I always hear an electric zapping sound when I turn the intensity up. That's probably bad...

Hey!

This sentence was a bit confusing to me at first glance - "To make it even more interesting, we want everyone to increase their chances of winning by allowing you to pick a 2m tip if someone you introduce into the competition manages to find the vanity address, that means two people can win 2m Doge (if both of you have sent out messages on social media that you are entering the competition)"

I think making it a bit more concise will help with the understanding of the buddy system.

Otherwise it looks great! Much wow. Such Spread.

Is Friday still update day?  Undecided

Yes, it is supposed to be.  Some positive non-crypto news that requires some attention has delayed this week's update.  Hoping to get an update to you all before the end of the weekend.

I agree with changing Spreadcoin to Spread.

Heres a video of it:

Enjoy.

Is it bad that this video makes me think of my liver?

Funny you should say that.... I had the sudden urge to go to the bathroom after watching the video.
It's like it stimulated the release valve of my bladder.

It happens sometimes when I watch liquifying things...  Grin

i like the idea of dropping the coin tag from the name. spread like butta. spread the wealth. i have several btc nodes ready for spreadilation. apologies if this question is redundant, but what are the requirements, if any, for running a spreadnode? my reference is the coin count requirement of the many masternode coins out now. In light of the recent bitcoin xt debate and civil war, i am building btc core nodes in defiance! spread the power!

So far, running a bitcoin full node is the main requirement, plus collateral to prevent sybil attacks.

What do you think is a good level of collateral? The current inherited model is a dynamic changing requirement.

Sorry, was a bit distracted finishing something off.

You too have been vocal on the slight name change.

PM your addy

Clean sweep so far; possibly over 100% if anyone has used a socket, which is permitted on this one Grin
