I'm know Drak is working on several things ATM for Viacoin+ClearingHouse. I'm also aware that services are being built as we speak for ClearingHouse, but in the meantime, allow me to propose something for the community.
This is related to app development on top of ClearingHouse; starting with some brainstorming ideas for services, games, connections to other services (marketplace), or any outside the box application you might think of that is possible.
The steps:
1- Brainstorming discussion and coming up with thought out applicable ideas (Starting Now).
2- Confirming possibilities with Drak, then Voting for app/service. (Starts January 7th, , ends at 9th 6pm GMT).
3- Starting a trusted fundraiser, in a community chosen site/platform. (Starting January 10th).

I had a discussion on Polo trollbox with 'Ironicexpert' about eventtoken. A token for events. He claims the token (or devs) have a patent on the idea (token for events). I guess when I will organise an event in for example The Netherlands using token, I could use token made on top of XCH and don't have to use patented eventtoken.
I am doubting that for the many possible applications, (all) ideas could be exclusively patented and therefore be claimed by a person or institution. I am not a lawyer so I don't know.

then again this factom crowdsale might draw attention to the notary stuff on XCH

not yet, you need some industry users to actually be using this stuff
that should start off with some bounties to incubate development
i've said this before but the person holding our funds just sits around doing nothing with them...
