Seeing how .bit domains has not got the attention or widespread practical use, and how exchanges have been dumping NMC continuously for lack of substantial volume, I feel is time to take action and reinterpret what is already there. There is great potential and a hard fork will provide a space to experiment it, as I previously commented, viagra was originally conceived as a heart pressure medicine originally called sildenafil, but patients noted an interesting side effect. And instead of fighting that, the creators used it to their advantage and now viagra is known for giving boners, and not for the original intended purpose.

Ok - but if you are interested in .bit specifically, then that is not about Namecoin Core itself (but applications built on top of it).  So wallet releases for Namecoin Core are not relevant here, neither are any plans for hard forks.

We already have good infrastructure for .bit lookups, thanks mainly to Jeremy's work on Electrum-NMC (for light lookups) and ncdns.  So the issue here is not technical development (or lack thereof), but convincing people that they should go ahead and try using .bit.  If you think you can help there, that would be awesome.

I'm aware about your talent and the things you can do, and i think you are the right person to lead this new project. Creating a hardfork would not compete with NMC in any way, and would provide a unique solution and concept of recycling unclaimed balances, which no coin has done so far. The basic idea is that balances get recycled back every sidereal year,  at the heliacal rising of the star Sirius, which was associated with the annual flooding of the ancient river Nile. The time to renew these balances is 70 days before this date, corresponding with the 70 days Sirius is invisible to the naked eye, and the 70 days it took for mummification in ancient Egypt to prepare the dead for the after life.

Yes, I'm aware of your idea.  And in fact, I don't think anyone in Namecoin actually opposes it.  So feel free to go ahead and do it, or pay a developer to do it for you.  The main point that Jeremy raised on the Namecoin forum was that Namecoin as a project has no interest in implementing your idea (because we personally don't think it is very useful, and would rather spend our time on improving Namecoin itself).

So if you think the project is dead because no "interesting features" are added, do you also think Bitcoin Core is dead?

The NMC project has to compete for a share of the attention BTC gets, and because NMC is much less known, it has to try harder and provide much more novelty than just basic wallet maintenance. There has not been real .bit uses so far, for example the btc-e exchange which got their domain seized didn't use .bit for their new wex reincarnation and instead used .nz, I'm sure they knew about this technology because NMC was one of their few trading pairs.

The dev seems to release a .0001 version wallet upgrade very 6 months, with no interesting features added, it feels like jacking off to me.

Just about this bit:  The main blockchain parts of Namecoin are mostly in place, so what new features do you expect?  The releases are based off corresponding Bitcoin Core releases plus added features (e.g. in the last year we added proper support for encodings of names/values, improved the RPC interface in general, and just recently allowed sending multiple name_updates in one block).  So if you think the project is dead because no "interesting features" are added, do you also think Bitcoin Core is dead?

(I'm not talking about applications built on top of Namecoin here, like .bit.  There is also lots of progress with those, with others apart from me working on it.)

Ah in all fairness you can only expect the developers to be abrasive or dismissive with posters advocating forking off in some other direction or proposing an alternative project ..if that's the post you are referring to.I wouldn't take offence after considering both sides of the discussion.
That is true in some respect, but like Buckminster Fuller said, instead of fighting forces, use them.
It was not a poster, the image is the logo but it came out really big.
Im really worried about this coin's future, I have invested almost all the money I had in it and its value has decreased ten fold, now it has near-zero liquidity, with 1 btc you could probably get the price down to a few cents. The dev seems to release a .0001 version wallet upgrade very 6 months, with no interesting features added, it feels like jacking off to me. That's why I'm proposing a fork with more room for improvement and foresight.
In another note, if the fork would duplicate your NMC balance, why would a dev be against it?, if it not because he already dumped all his coins.

How interesting and ironic that a coin that sells itself of being against speech censorship and centralized authority, the main developer "biolizard" censors the coin's forum and with very ungracious language just by speaking your mind and ideas, showing the weak moral foundations behind this coin and the ungratefulness towards the investors aka "bagholders".

The developers work for free.It would be a good idea if people could donate directly from their wallet through some agreed tax or interest on holdings. Why should anyone work for free?

Crowdfunding the hard fork is a good idea, but keep in mind that the monetary reward for developers would be given as an equal amount of their NMC balance in OSIRIS. However you did bring an interesting point regarding the wallet, because since both NMC and BTC use SHA-256, it would be technically possible for the OSIRIS wallet to have an order book that atomic swaps between BTC and NMC.

Today is the heliacal rising of the star Sirius, and is associated with Osiris, the God of resurrection in ancient Egyptian thought, and this is the perfect day to start a novel proposal hack for a Namecoin hard fork named OSIRIS based on the principle of recycling un-renewed coins. The concept of expiration is already present in NMC but instead of wallets that expire, are domain names. The basic idea of OSIRIS is that un-renewed or forever lost coins due to lost private keys are recycled back into the ecosystem, rewarding them to miners at their expiration date. This idea has matured over many years and there is a post in the project direction NMC forum describing this as well. Does anyone feel betrayed by the lack of general interest and fresh ideas around this coin and is concerned that their investment will disappear soon as it seems to sink ever more into the mud as time passes? Does any one want to join forces and fabricate a hardfork that would make their NMC investment float and survive in the challenging waves of the present sea of crypto novelty?

You do know that when Osiris was cut into 14 pieces - with Isis and her sister searching and reclaiming the parts - that only 13 were recovered, right?
Osiris never got his dick back. I don't know about anyone else but I am not interested in any project where there is a chance I can have my manhood eaten by an oxyrhynchus fish.

Although there are some who are willing to take such risks... https://diegorod.github.io/WillMcAfeeEatHisOwnDick/

Yes, but her sister Isis represented by the star Sirius gave him an erect phallus made of solid gold and became pregnant by it, hence the birth of Horus, i.e. The Sun.
I took a photo of that moment in the Osireion, Isis having transformed into a falcon https://i.ibb.co/sFQj9cY/osireon2.jpg
No need to join if your manhood is at stake

FYI, we've just tagged Namecoin Core 0.18.1: https://github.com/namecoin/namecoin-core/releases/tag/nc0.18.1

This is a minor release, mostly incorporating upstream changes and based on Bitcoin Core 0.18.1.  There is no immediate need to update if you are running Namecoin Core 0.18.0 already.

Namecoin Core version nc0.18.0 (64-bit) does not work on mac either.

I don't have a mac to test, but can you perhaps still give some more details of what exactly the issue is?  Maybe we can still debug it.

Better yet, put the details in a new issue on https://github.com/namecoin/namecoin-core.  Thanks!

I am currently stuck at no peers to connect to
