Is there a new update about this coin legend? I see a lack of market interest since two years ago which caused the price and volume of Namcoin to decline. Altcoin competition may be one of the factors also why this coin cannot rise. So I will wait for a new roadmap, especially when Bitcoin will halving soon.

Does the project still works? And can we still get a .bit domain name?

Yes, the project is still very much alive and you can register names through Namecoin Core or Electrum-NMC if you want.

please forgive the noob question, but in this and cryptocoin projects in general:
why are the wallet and explorer separate things? is it too difficult to incorporate an explorer into the client?
In the case of NMC, I would really like to do a search and find all the results, instead of simply checking to see if a namespace is available.
thnx

A block explorer is something quite different at least in terms of UI than a wallet, that's presumably the reason.  They also use some indices (e.g. of all data by address), which are not needed for ordinary operation and would thus increase the storage and computing cost of a full node if included by default.  Also most block explorers run on a website, so that people can use them without a full node, which can be useful.

Note that Namecoin Core does allow you to retrieve essentially all the data a block explorer has through its RPC interface, as well as get a list of all registered names (using name_scan).  There is just not a UI for it.

Love the new wallet. Seed phrases are a great implementation!
ah.... Is there no longer an active online explorer?

We've just tagged Namecoin Core 0.19.0 in the Github repository (https://github.com/namecoin/namecoin-co ... g/nc0.19.0). This is a new major release of Namecoin Core, mostly incorporating the upstream changes that Bitcoin Core 0.19.0 brought. It also includes a refactor of the mempool handling logic for names, which will in the future allow sending multiple pending name_updates for a single name. (While not typically useful for Namecoin, there was no good reason to disallow this; it can be useful in emergencies or when a messed-up name_update has been issued accidentally to fix the situation more quickly.)

The team announced SoftFork was successful, they make out the network failures that appeared immediately after activating the soft fork

This...

Namecoin Core 0.18.0 has been released on the Downloads page. This release succesfully softforked at block height 475,000 on mainnet. Contained in the softfork are:

    P2SH
    CSV
    SegWit

That are now activated.

Miners, exchanges, registrars, explorers, ElectrumX servers, and all other service providers should upgrade as soon as possible.

namecoin is a great idea and trial, but seems not get seriouly applied.

now,ENS of ethereum seems more popular with some good names for auction.

Except that ENS is a lot more centralised than Namecoin.

Wow I'm surprised to see this come to the top! Good oldschool choice bumper Wink

Thanks!  Cheesy

In 2014-2015 I tried fiddling around with setting up a .bit domain using NMC, however the Mozilla browser plugin/extension was just too finnicky and I could never get it to work right. It was a great idea for a coin but at the end of the day it is still subject to a central point of failure, which is the fact that the .bit extension isn't being updated as fast as the web browsers are.
if we see a significant development is certainly quite suprising, behind the succes always have obstacles. lets see next progress whether they are able to maintain a positive trend, a great hope for the team

Ok - but if you are interested in .bit specifically, then that is not about Namecoin Core itself (but applications built on top of it).  So wallet releases for Namecoin Core are not relevant here, neither are any plans for hard forks.

We already have good infrastructure for .bit lookups, thanks mainly to Jeremy's work on Electrum-NMC (for light lookups) and ncdns.  So the issue here is not technical development (or lack thereof), but convincing people that they should go ahead and try using .bit.  If you think you can help there, that would be awesome.

The point is that nobody uses Namecoin or the .bit technology and that the coin is dying on the exchanges for lack of liquidity, which also poses a vulnerability for the security of the network as a whole. It feels like a nerd project that looks awesome in the laboratory but has no real world applications, I actually came in contact with the chief developers at brave browser a year ago and suggested to implement the working of .bit address by default, the director said it was going to looked into it but did not hear from them again. It really seems like nobody cares about it.

Yes, I'm aware of your idea.  And in fact, I don't think anyone in Namecoin actually opposes it.  So feel free to go ahead and do it, or pay a developer to do it for you.  The main point that Jeremy raised on the Namecoin forum was that Namecoin as a project has no interest in implementing your idea (because we personally don't think it is very useful, and would rather spend our time on improving Namecoin itself).

Yes, thank you for your reply, I'm wiling to pay in NMC
