Does anyone think NameCoin will be of any benefit going forward with all this purging of accounts off twitter and other platforms and if so how, application wise?

Namecoin is far bigger than a twitter account or any other social media account in my opinion.... start thinking about when Twitter.com gets their domain taken because they keep restricting the President of the United States freedom of speech.

When Twitter needs a new home, secure, forever home... Namecoin will shine.

Jack (Twitter CEO) is already a Bitcoiner.  Last I checked he had a Bitcoin in his Twitters bio page.

Our arena is live and ready to rock n roll:  https://freebitcoins.com/xchange/market/BTC_NMC

As our XChange grows, this will give our "Swap" tool liquidity to work with.  Swap allows users to do market orders on XChange without signing up for an account with us.  It's a lot like Shapeshift used to be.  Namecoin is listed here as well of course.  https://freebitcoins.com/swap/

Both XChange and Swap have API's for people looking for automation or additional privacy (no javascript).

Gl and Hf.  Hollar at me if y'all need me or have updates or have any questions.

Thanks!

As an aside, I just realized that apparently Kefkius is a developer of your exchange?  If so, that's cool; we know him (he's a former Namecoin developer; he did the earliest work on Electrum-NMC, back in 2015).  Small world.  Smiley

Kef left shortly before XChange began.  He's still in our Discord and I bug him as needed.  Kef got a grown-up job... hopefully we'll get him back on when we aren't so poor!  Tongue

Kef is a great dude.  It is a small world.

The XChange developer is Xploited.  X created CLAM (Clamcoin) and was an early developer in Digibyte.

Also, I tried to email the email listed on https://www.namecoin.org/exchanges/ and it seemed my email bounced back:

<[email protected]>: connect to namecoin.org
    Connection refused

We are going to do the Bronze deal unless it's like that fee every day. Tongue

Thanks for reporting that; we're looking into it.  I'm guessing this is an accidental result of some infrastructure shuffling that we did recently.

Should be fixed now, was a DNS issue.  Might take a little while for the update to propagate.  Thanks again for reporting the issue.

My pleasure and thank you as well.

Update:  We have fixed the logo.  Do you see any other links we should be including on:  https://freebitcoins.com/xchange/asset/NMC

The Namecha.in explorer is currently broken, and attempts to contact its operator have been unsuccessful.  At the moment probably the least bad explorer is https://www.namebrow.se/ , so maybe link to that explorer instead.

Describing the PoW as SHA256d is slightly imprecise; describing it as AuxPoW-SHA256d would probably be more precise.

You can add the total supply; it's the same as Bitcoin.

Those are the only changes I can think of right now.

Beautiful.

We'll get stuff updated too.

Thanks!

(minor typo, we are fixing it atm too)

Mind fixing your Namecoin logo?  The logo you're using isn't Namecoin's.  Correct logo is at https://github.com/namecoin/namecoin-graphics .

Ah, thank you very much.  If you want to send me a Bitcoin address, I'll send you a tip.

So Namecoin no longer being maintained by the original development team?  since when?

To elaborate a bit on Daniel's post above: Namecoin's original dev "team" (if you could call it that) was one guy, Vincent Durham.  (There were a bunch of pre-genesis researchers who contributed, e.g. Appamatto, Aaron Swartz, Dan Kaminsky, and Zooko Wilcox, but I wouldn't describe them as Namecoin developers.)  Basically the same as Bitcoin's original dev "team" being Satoshi Nakamoto.  Like Satoshi, Vince retired circa 2011, leaving the project in the hands of the community.

Daniel and I joined Namecoin development in 2013 IIRC.  So there's been some continuity since 2013.  That said, as with any free software project, new developers will sometimes join.  Ahmed, Aerth, and Lola are examples of relatively recently (last few years) added developers.  There's nothing wrong with this: any project that doesn't attract new developers from time to time is probably an unhealthy project.

Since 2015 there is a fork of Namecoin because the .bit TLD was never established: SixElevenCoin

Since that date, blockchain registered domain name objects of 611coin are published using the anonymous SLD .611.to.

611coin is an accepted #cryptocurrency #blockchain domain namespace. The SLD .611.to is listed in the Public Suffix List which is used by major Browser and SSL authorities.

And like Namecoin, 611coin is an Open Source project: GitHub 611project

Interesting.  Aside from publishing names through a (centralised) server on 611.to, is there any other features that 611 has over Namecoin?  Because if that is all, then honestly it sounds like a cash grab to me - in Namecoin itself, everyone is free to just run something like 611.to on their own server if they want.  No fork or permission required to do so.  If you want a centralised server to resolve .bit, just go ahead and set one up.

Yeah, it's obviously a cash grab; there was apparently a massive premine.  See https://forum.namecoin.org/viewtopic.php?p=16101#p16101 , h/t to erkan for surfacing that.

@Bitbobb pm sent

Jeremy has sent a message that he cannot log into this site now that they put tor login protection on the forum.

He says that work can continue on the electrum wallet.

Bounty instructions for those interested will follow..

Thanks for delivering the message Bitbobb, much appreciated.  Issue appears to be mostly fixed now, so I should be able to resume posting here (not going to make promises on frequency; see my posting history on Reddit/Twitter -- IRC remains the quickest way to get my attention).

Meanwhile, a status update: we released Electrum-NMC v3.3.10 today.  Huge thanks to s7r from Tor for his excellent assistance.  More info, including changelog, at https://www.namecoin.org/2020/06/07/electrum-nmc-v3.3.10-released.html .

Cheers!

Namecoin should dump all that .bit shyte and concentrate on being just a currency like the bitcorn
As the term “Namecoin” suggests, the primary purpose of the blockchain is to register/resolve domain names and identities. By the way: If we won't get the .bit TDL finally established and widely accepted, then the whole project might come to an end at the latest when someone comes up with the idea to register the .bit TDL in the regular ICANN namespace, with about 200,000 USD you are in! These are peanuts for interested investors! At the moment the .bit TDL is only a pseudo top level domain and just tolerated, but without any legal protection! Just as warning to the nerd “J.R.” squatting on namecoin.org claiming to be the incarnation and “owner” of the Namecoin project! The original creator and developers of Namecoin have left the sinking ship already years ago, so it's finally time to get a new crew before it's too late!

For sure, we all would love to see ICANN donating the .bit TLD to the Namecoin project, but for this to happen, Namecoin needs to meet the legal requirements of ICANN first, which is conflicting to the aim of the project.

The developers of Namecoin have always been actively promoting the principles of this project, so don't blame them for the fact that .bit TLD has not established, yet.

There has never been public pressure on ICANN to support this project for the sake of free speech. That's not the fault of the Namecoin developers.

FreeBitcoins.com is syncing Namecoin right now and we intend on listing NMC on our "XChange".

We should be rocking and rolling by the end of the week I'd imagine... assuming she syncs decently!

*tips hat at domob*

Has FreeBitcoins.com disposable deposit addresses?

We have disposable accounts... I think that's safer than having multiple addresses linked to a single account.

If you'd like a new deposit address, just create a new account.

In the future we probably will add disposable accounts for people that more easily want to keep up with their altcoin history + have a little more blockchain privacy.

Similar yes, except this is much older and fully decentralised (while at least .eth has a backdoor, I don't know much about .crypto).
Correction: The Namecoin blockchain is fully decentralized, the Namecoin project itself got hijacked by a guy called Jeremy Rand. Namecoin is his playground, and he thinks the community would have to guzzle what he dishes! Be aware of! See again this thread!

And PS: Everyone should know, that the Electrum-wallet is a light weight wallet without own database, so there are some Electrum server running which are providing the blockchain. So surely this is no longer a real decentralized peer-to-peer network. At the moment there's a server/client model you can call in the best case an hybrid solution! So congrats once again to “J.R.”, who provided "his" Electrum-wallet, leading away from the decentralized nature of the Namecoin-project!

So Namecoin no longer being maintained by the original development team?  since when?

Namecoin is still being maintained by the same team and developed with the same direction and goals in mind as for the last couple of years.
