The good thing about Namecoin mining is that is piggybacking on Bitcoin’s miners, something that was established in the beginnings as merged mining. For this reason NMC has a lot of potential in the sense that its blockchain is secured by BTC and so the price of NMC may drop without its network being compromised by attacks. The bad thing is that NMC has been kept in a closet for some reason, its tremendous potential has been hindered by nearsightedness, the current developer claims that only the functionality is important to him yet for many years I have personally seen no functionality, even to try it in the nightly build  tor browser is almost impossible. Mayor exchanges have been delisting NMC do to low volume and lack of interest, I have been holding this coin for three years also thinking about its functionality but only have seen my investment been reduced 10 times, there seems to be no limit to how low the price of this coin can go, something is definitely not working. If there is something in all these years I have noticed is that when Bitcoin pumps, Namecoin bleeds, and when Bitcoin dumps, Namecoin bleeds even harder. If functionality was the only important thing, then why not just create a non-monetary domain blockchain, its like saying that you only care about the functionality of your bicycle but that the roads you ride in are of no importance because they are unpredictable and irrational. There is clearly a one sided thinking at the core of this project that is driving it to its demise.

i cannot see why the market price shall have any relevance, for me only the functionality has. This, i believe in this coin, and own it independant of the market price. And i like it because of no lying PR. The only thing is, that other technicians should know that this technology exist.

Functionality has a price.
Namecoin cannot exist without mining
Mining costs joules.
Joules are not free.

i agree, and namecoin has a price, and will have it as long as it has a functionality. But why should it have a higher price than now? For most crypto investors it has no more functionality than becoming rich itself, and i will compete this behaviour, with my modest capabilities.

Because pumper dumpers and market makers don't appreciate the protection of freedom of speech.

Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

Be the change you want to see... come offer to buy some Namecoins or offer to sell some Namecoins on an exchange that is easy for people to maintain their privacy and actually withdraw their coins.

A little secret about this stuff... No one wants you until everyone wants you and the moment a VC sees they can make some money off it, tada.  Namecoin has that potential.

Why the marketcap is so low?

Because pumper dumpers and market makers don't appreciate the protection of freedom of speech. When their blog or website gets taken down after some faux pas that offends some Karen or hybrid kev/kar then they might learn the hard way about the benefits of Name Coin Smiley

I honestly thought that Namecoin died ages ago and haven't bothered looking into it. After seeing this thread bumping up i checked the github and was very pleasantly surprised. Why the marketcap is so low? Has there been some problems with this in the past?

I've honestly given up on trying to understand how markets think, because I think they're not really behaving rationally, and I try not to parse irrationality for the same reason that I try not to segfault Konsole by running "cat /dev/random".

That said, I speculate that part of the issue is that we're engineers, not marketers.  When you interact with us on Twitter, IRC, Reddit, etc, you're talking to the people who write the code, not some kind of PR sales drone.  This has major ethical benefits, e.g. you won't get fraudulent advice that Namecoin magically makes you anonymous or will make you rich.  It also has downsides, e.g. the fact that none of us really enjoy spending lots of time on public relations, and as a result a lot of people who don't closely pay attention don't know that we exist (or think that we died half a decade ago).  We *are* improving on this front, e.g. we now regularly give talks at conferences (I gave talks at C3 for the last 3 years; it's the largest hacker conference in Europe... perhaps you've heard about the big Tor Browser announcement I made at 36C3?), but at the end of the day there are some audiences that you can't really reach reliably without a massive marketing push, which we are simply not willing to do (because doing so would consume too many resources, pose ethics problems, or both).

Namecoin need make more efforts to compete with eth ENS,Handshake, etc, especially ENS now become more and more popular.

Hmm, there might be an announcement pertaining to this subject coming out in the next couple months.  Alas, I'm not currently able to disclose details.  Anyway, I can definitely say that there's not a lack of effort being expended on this front.

Every so often we get asked why Namecoin's TLS functionality is relevant given that Let's Encrypt exists.  Thus, we've added a FAQ entry about how the two systems compare: https://www.namecoin.org/docs/faq/#how-does-namecoin-compare-to-lets-encrypt

start thinking about when Twitter.com gets their domain taken because they keep restricting the President of the United States freedom of speech.
When Twitter needs a new home, secure, forever home... Namecoin will shine.

Excellent alternative perspective.I like it!

Does anyone think NameCoin will be of any benefit going forward with all this purging of accounts off twitter and other platforms and if so how, application wise?

Namecoin is far bigger than a twitter account or any other social media account in my opinion.... start thinking about when Twitter.com gets their domain taken because they keep restricting the President of the United States freedom of speech.

When Twitter needs a new home, secure, forever home... Namecoin will shine.

Jack (Twitter CEO) is already a Bitcoiner.  Last I checked he had a Bitcoin in his Twitters bio page.

Our arena is live and ready to rock n roll:  https://freebitcoins.com/xchange/market/BTC_NMC

As our XChange grows, this will give our "Swap" tool liquidity to work with.  Swap allows users to do market orders on XChange without signing up for an account with us.  It's a lot like Shapeshift used to be.  Namecoin is listed here as well of course.  https://freebitcoins.com/swap/

Both XChange and Swap have API's for people looking for automation or additional privacy (no javascript).

Gl and Hf.  Hollar at me if y'all need me or have updates or have any questions.

Thanks!

As an aside, I just realized that apparently Kefkius is a developer of your exchange?  If so, that's cool; we know him (he's a former Namecoin developer; he did the earliest work on Electrum-NMC, back in 2015).  Small world.  Smiley

Kef left shortly before XChange began.  He's still in our Discord and I bug him as needed.  Kef got a grown-up job... hopefully we'll get him back on when we aren't so poor!  Tongue

Kef is a great dude.  It is a small world.

The XChange developer is Xploited.  X created CLAM (Clamcoin) and was an early developer in Digibyte.

Also, I tried to email the email listed on https://www.namecoin.org/exchanges/ and it seemed my email bounced back:

<[email protected]>: connect to namecoin.org
    Connection refused

We are going to do the Bronze deal unless it's like that fee every day. Tongue

Thanks for reporting that; we're looking into it.  I'm guessing this is an accidental result of some infrastructure shuffling that we did recently.

Should be fixed now, was a DNS issue.  Might take a little while for the update to propagate.  Thanks again for reporting the issue.

My pleasure and thank you as well.

Update:  We have fixed the logo.  Do you see any other links we should be including on:  https://freebitcoins.com/xchange/asset/NMC

The Namecha.in explorer is currently broken, and attempts to contact its operator have been unsuccessful.  At the moment probably the least bad explorer is https://www.namebrow.se/ , so maybe link to that explorer instead.

Describing the PoW as SHA256d is slightly imprecise; describing it as AuxPoW-SHA256d would probably be more precise.

You can add the total supply; it's the same as Bitcoin.

Those are the only changes I can think of right now.

Beautiful.

We'll get stuff updated too.

Thanks!

(minor typo, we are fixing it atm too)
