what is your setting for your 290?
Cards do run defintately hotter for me, about 20 °C from 59 to about 80. Had to set fans from 55% to 60%.
Settings:

how disable pool 0? who can do it?
In the miner window, press P, then C then 0 to change it to failover-only mode.
Or you can use CGWatcher >1.37 version, and use the pool guard feature in the Monitor Tab, Pool Guard Tab.

BTW I solved temp and fan speed control by these commands
export DISPLAY=:0
export GPU_MAX_ALLOC_PERCENT=100
export GPU_USE_SYNC_OBJECTS=1
./sgminer -c dark.conf

If you try the version from the other thread, same speed NO 2% hidden mining.
Or just press P C 0 and enter to disable the donation pool.
