1) Simply ask them what is so great about BFL. (in very concise terms...no vague remarks)

2) Then, ask them how they view the faults of BFL. (again, in very concise terms)

3) Once they have excused their chosen vendor for their errors, however grave it may be...

4) Use or "Adapt" the exact same reasons and words they used or employed to defend your own vendor.

1) Community as a whole benefits from ASIC vendor competition. BFL's chips should be more efficient (due to 65nm).

2) I don't care, as long as they eventually deliver. The 65nm process is riskier but should keep their product competitive for longer, even if Avalon delivers sooner.

3/4) Obviously I also want to see Avalon and the others succeed. Competition is beneficial.

Actually, they haven't been paid yet as far as I know.

They have been promised that when BFL's products are ready, then they will receive one for free.

The contest is for an FPGA single.  There was some question a while back whether the winners had received their hardware, to which Josh stated "they have all been shipped".  I imaging there would have been more said about it if ppl had not actually received it.

I don't really like the contest either.  Unfortunately if called out, BFL can truthfully say "but our competition does it too!"

But somebody set the standard. At one time in Tunica, everybody had to pay for mixed drinks while sitting at the bar, until Sam's Town was the first to change policy, whereupon all the other casinos had to follow suit or face lower attendance.

Damn, I miss poker life sometimes. Free rooms, free food, horny waitresses, southern hospitality... Did I mention horny waitresses?

P.S Whenever you see Inaba/Josh attempt to bash other vendors for minor slips, keep in mind his own vendor has oil spills the size of Kansas.

That lame attempt to portray other vendors in a negative light just needed a few tweaks to make it a mirror for BFL's own lack luster performance.

You can't shouldn't throw a rock in a glass house I think the saying goes.

Fixed.

Good posts.

Hypothetical:

If you are already covered in sh1t and your competition isn't, then you potentially benefit by starting a manure fight.

Not only that, but the ammo needs protecting because the enemy may revert to steeling so that they'll have volleys of their own.

If you really want to corner someone who is doing trollish defense out of self interests.

(Note: If they try to invalidate their own arguments, then you use their invalidation attempts against their own points. Zero Sum Game.)

5) The trollish crowd will keep quiet having been backed into a self created corner.

6) Repeat.

Actually, they haven't been paid yet as far as I know.

They have been promised that when BFL's products are ready, then they will receive one for free.

-----------------------------

People who are in the contest or have been promised an item because they "won"...for doing pretty much nothing but becoming a walking billboard....have a reason to defend BFL.

If BFL fails to deliver (for any number of reasons) they neither get their purchase orders nor their free item that they won.
If BFL does delivery, they just sold a bit of their pride for hardware.

The interesting thing is not that they want "free stuff" and are willing to edit their collective signature....I mean who wouldn't right?
The really interesting part is what it does to their psychology and how they handle whatever may happen that threatens that return.

For example, if customers complain and bitch and moan (legitimately) because they haven't yet received their item, then they have to protect their own interests and drown out the complaints. (Trollish)

Another example, if there are droves of people heading out of BFL and asking for refunds, the walking bill board folk, will fall into two possible categories. They are either the type to ask people to GTFO even faster by throwing them out the window. Or, they are the type to call for people to "hold on" a "bit longer" that everything will be alright. (probably true if BFL does someday deliver)

------------------------

To put it simply, the walking bill boards have an invested interest. More so than just a paying customer.

If BFL gets too many refunds and for whatever reason they cannot continue their operations of building the ASIC, then they are SOL. (Sh*t Outta Luck)

Excuse my parlance.

When you argue with those whom seem to be overly accepting of the delays and call out for others to hold on, keep in mind they are looking out for themselves. If their vendor goes, so do they.

EXCEPTIONS: There are only a few exceptions that wear the banner and are still critical of BFL.

For everyone:
The comments here: https://forums.butterflylabs.com/content/127-bfl-asic-delays-depth-expanation-comments.html
Match the thread comments there: https://forums.butterflylabs.com/article-comments/535-article-bfl-asic-delays-depth-explanation.html
And the first link only display a fraction of the comments when you are not logged into the site, whereas the second link always display all the comments.

It might be browser dependent. While I'm logged in, on the second link (535) it will display all the comments in the thread. After 5 seconds it then starts at comment #12.
Interestingly, if I view the page source I can still see all the comments, they just aren't displayed.

PS - My job is not PR or investor relations, which is why I don't coddle idiots like Frizz and PuertoLibre when they display their stupidity over and over.

...
The topic never really came up.  BFL as a corporate entity is a startup and has been running very lean and mean.  With wild success and absolutely spectacular outlook for products, it’s time to move to the next stage of business. With my diverse skill set, I can replace both a technical lead and a PR/community lead, thereby eliminating the need for an additional person, which means we can move that much quicker in the market as well as have that much less overhead that can go towards development instead of human resources.
...

You do know your job description at BFL, no? Grin

Where? I see no pagination at https://forums.butterflylabs.com/content/127-bfl-asic-delays-depth-expanation.html See Chrome screenshot below.

You have to login to see the 2nd page of comments.

Thanks, that explains it.
Now you are just talking out of your ass, because being logged in or not doesn't matter at all, you can only see ALL comments by going to the bfl forum mainpage, bottom and selecting the topic under "article comments".

You are correct, thanks. But you really suck at explanations. Being logged in does matter when browsing one of the links, and is the root cause of the confusion in this thread. Only now I understand what you were trying to say. Why not just provide a link to the top thread (instead of a link to your own comment in the thread -- this was confusing)?
