Facebook and its Experiments with Augmented Reality

Back in 2017, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg envisioned augmented reality (AR) as a future of technology, while addressing developers at the Annual F8 Developer Conference (F8). With over 2 billion active users on Facebook, let us peek though the evolution of its AR platform.
Zuckerberg was fascinated by the augmented reality concept right when he was first exposed to Oculus Go headset. He said, “I used to think that glasses were going to be the first mainstream augmented reality platform,” at his keynote at F8 in 2017. Contradicting him, Oculus Research Chief Scientist Michael Abrash noted that consumer-ready augmented reality glasses will not see the light of the day for at least 10 years from now.

Augmented reality exhibit comes to Union Mills Homestead

A new augmented reality exhibition has been on display at the Union Mills Homestead for about a week, with chances for visitors to see what Union Mills was like from the late 1700s through the Industrial Revolution.

The exhibition — put on as a collaboration between the homestead, Carroll County Public Library and Balti Virtual — tells the story of Union Mills’ early industrial history and focuses on the grist mill and the tannery. Sam Riley, president of the Union Mills Homestead Board of Governors, said the history is one that doesn’t get enough attention.

Why AR will soon dominate our reality

Augmented reality will change the way we use smartphones. While recent attempts to get going were often just simple filters on our selfies — they’re called animojis or something — developers are now discovering the possibilities of ARKit and ARCore. And demos are showing us already: the next few months will be exciting.

3 Ways AR Creates Customer Value That’s Practical, Yet Personal

Augmented reality is quickly becoming the darling of the media industry. Unlike the dash for virtual reality over the last five years, AR has crept up through popular games and social platforms to become a transformative tool for media. What makes it so transformative and appealing to consumers? For one, while VR is largely a solo experience (at the moment, anyway). AR allows for a shareable digital experience rather than being isolated in a headset. AR is more natural for consumers in their current UX habits, being used to glance or being absorbed into their device, playing with their handset and getting a digital response from touch and gestures. AR allows consumers to invite their friends to experience something with them rather than passing a VR headset around to experience something alone. It is the layering and playful manipulation of real-world assets that have audiences engaged and eager for more.

Octi raises $7.5M to create augmented reality that understands human movement

The team at Octi says it’s building a crucial piece of the augmented reality puzzle — the ability to understand the human body and its movement.

Co-founder and CEO Justin Fuisz told me that most existing AR technologies (including Apple’s ARKit) tend to be “plane-based” — in other words, while they can make something cool appear against a real-world background, it’s usually on a flat surface, like a table or the floor.

The Walking Dead: Our World uses AR to bring zombie hordes to your door

Finnish game developer Next Games and AMC have released a gruesome new mobile game that uses augmented reality (AR) to spread zombie hordes through the real world. The Walking Dead: Our World, first announced in August 2017, is available to download free for iOS and Android, and invites you to fend off walkers solo, or in weekly team missions with friends.

The Walking Dead: Our World is powered by Google Maps, with a game map that landmarks like the Statue of Liberty, the Burj Khalifa and the London Eye. Think Pokémon Go, but with gruesome, bloodthirsty walkers to battle instead of bouncy little critters.

3 Retail Apps Taking Advantage of Augmented Reality

Augmented reality became a hot concept two summers ago with the astronomical rise of Pokemon Go. And while AR has an obvious place when it comes to gaming apps, one of the more interesting use cases of the technology is for retail apps.
Let’s take a look at 3 retail apps capitalizing on augmented reality.

Augmented Reality For Digital Transformation In Healthcare

The role that digital transformation has played in recent years — disrupting business flow and treatment models in healthcare — has made a major impression throughout the sector. The industry has long been dominated by records keeping requirements that have often limited the quality of care. However, a paperless system and data–driven decision–making have revolutionized it in a short time. Thanks to improvements in security protocols and management processes, HIPAA requirements are now readily incorporated into digital transformations. Bringing all these developments together with Augmented Reality (AR) systems is now pushing the revolution directly to the point of service, supplying actual information for diagnosis and treatment.

Snapchat Launches Augmented Reality Experiences in Disneyland, Universal Studios

For the first time ever, Snapchat is launching AR experiences with all three major theme park operators, Disney, Universal and Six Flags.
The Minions are taking over Universal Studios theme parks this summer thanks to a new Snapchat augmented reality experience.

The experience, which shows the animated yellow characters’ antics throughout the park, is part of a larger effort by Snapchat to bring its reality-altering lenses to theme parks around the world. For the first time ever, Snapchat has struck deals with all three major theme park operators — Disney, Universal and Six Flags — to introduce park-specific lenses this summer.

Facebook is testing augmented reality ads in the News Feed

Facebook  is giving advertisers new ways to show off their products, including with augmented reality.

At its F8 developer conference earlier this year, Facebook announced that it was working with businesses to use AR to show off products in Messenger. Now a similar experience will start appearing in the News Feed, with a select group of advertisers testing out AR ads.

As the virtual and Augmented Reality markets continue to soar, with the new technology drawing increasing interest across the entertainment world, the combined value of the sector is set to smash through the $170 billion barrier. The growth is not only fuelled by entertainment, however, as uptake of the visualisation tools takes off in a major way in the health, manufacturing and retail segments in particular.
