Obviously this discussion should happen, but not in this thread.  You can't really change the rules after the auction has started.

How serious should we take an offer from a forum member with no reputation?

Does it matter? If they don't pay, there are plenty of fall back bids.

Its a problem. Think about it. Price at 60BTC. The bidder that wants to win bids 10@61BTC. Then he goes in with a fake account and bids 10@210. He knows that he wont pay the higher bid so that he will get all miners for 61BTC. Effectively forcing out all other bidders because they cant bid anymore. Theres no protection yet except reputation or something. But i think many users here on the forum have many different forum accounts. And are they only created for getting the ripple giveaway.

I think requiring a deposit from unknown members(to John) to show that they mean business is a good idea.

If the problem is the concern about fake account, then why not price the units at a static price? Use the pricing model that Avalon used for their machines. If that isn't good enough then the potential for sales over time will be eroded by additional competition and diminished returns from increasing difficulty as more ASICs come online. Strike while the iron is hot, make the money and remain competitive in the market. If the prices are out of whack and everything is dragged out with auctions then others will have time to refine products and get them out the door to willing buyers. Simple economics.

Surely you are no shareholder. If avalon wants to churn out machines for low money that later sell for a multiple on ebay its their thing. Asicminer wont do this.

The whole point of the auction is to figure out what the price should be.

Does it matter? If they don't pay up, you have a record for next in line. They should be happy to have their bid honored.
The problem of fakes is that they may bid the price up. So they're doing damage to honest bidders.

John, I think maybe you should be keeping track of the first 20 bids or so, so that when people put in fake bids and fail to pay to escrow, the next on the list can be promptly notified.

deposit?

That's not a bad idea.  Actually a few ideas come to mind.

x% deposit on all bids?  (x between 1 and 10)

How about a silent auction where your bid for BTCx is represented by sending x satoshi to a predetermined address?   (fully refundable at conclusion of auction of course)

Probably a bit late to be discussing this after the auction has started though....
