That was mentioned many times, and about the investing only in top 10 coins. This strategy doesn´t mean that you are secure against loss. Look which coins were in top 10 in 2016 or in 2017. Many of them are not even in top 100 now. 
That is why you need to always monitor your holdings, many believe that the only thing that you need to do as a holder is to buy your coins and then forget about them and that is not true, you need to hold your coins but at some point you need to be able to tell when it is enough and when you need to sell your coins, this is especially true for altcoins because I do not really believe in holding those kind of coins for years in the same way that I hold my bitcoin.

But in all honesty, all these still doesn't apply because of the highly volatile nature of this space and its unpredictability.
