Bergamo mayor Giorgio Gori claims a Champions League match between Atalanta and Valencia in Italy ‘infected 40,000 fans’ in attendance.

Well, it could be  Roll Eyes Undecided
Maybe not 40 000, but it's very likely that many spectators of this game got infected. But when this match was held, there was just 3 confirmed COVID-19 cases in whole Italy, so back then nobody didn't saw strong enough reasons to play game without spectators or postpone game. I think nobody of us just month ago haven't expected that situation with this virus can become such terrible and we will have complete lockdown in whole Europe and almost in whole World.

Maybe 40k potentially 'exposed' to it, but that figure is one that is probably pulled out of thin air ultimately. I think it's going to be a very long time before we see any international games though. There's no end in sight for this virus right now and I wouldn't be surprised if all football is essentially cancelled for the rest of the year. I hope they just postpone/reschedule games/leagues no matter how long it takes though rather than null and void the current ones like they've just done in the English lower leagues. It's unfair to all the teams that are potentially going to win promotion and titles not to mention giving a free pass to relegation zone teams.

That’s true, they couldn’t know the risk
There will be more scenarios like this one that will confirm a possible spread of the virus on some events in the last month and a half

Life, Love and Laughter...
So anyone heard about all the different proposals for a mini tournament? I bet you, the smaller teams will love this (like Atletico) but it will probably be a tight schedule anyway for everyone so I expect a very packed July and August, and a super late Champions League 2021 with maybe even shorter KO playoffs and qualifiers before a late group stage.

I say cancel all international friendlies!

And postpone Euro 2020, cancel domestic cup games and extend the season til June or July.  IMHO.

But looking at how the outbreak hasn't peaked yet, I think all the quarantines could last longer than a couple of months.

So I just read the news that with the postponement of UEFA's Euro 2020, even club competitions organized by FIFA, as in the FIFA Club World Cup, will be postponed. They apparently wanted a bigger format so the current trophy might even be changed and Liverpool could be the last team to win it in the current format. I guess FIFA is jealous of UEFA's huge numbers.

Yep, they are trying to make world club competition relevant for years now. Not really a chance of doing that, the only game that will ever be interesting to fans is the final. And only in the case that the South American and European champions are meeting there, because football teams from other continents are simply not good enough to attract massive audiences.

Even the clubs that are playing in that world cup find it irrelevant and a nuisance during the season, I don't know what they could do to make it interesting. Maybe if they make a version of Champions cup - where national champions play knockout tournament. But that would last too long.

that it is a big pity that players can't play every day. Then we will have 10+ competition, a lot of games and so much money for FIFA and UEFA.
I don't know if anyone noticed or I'm wrong, but every year when we have Euro or World cup, it all reflects on the quality of the national leagues. Many injuries, top players get very tired and give the best performance for clubs.
I am a much bigger fan of clubs competition that any national selections cup. There are usually only 2-3 interesting and uncertain matches to watch.

Cancelling all International friendlies is much better option as these are never been helpful just waste of time and in current situation if they are going to wait for some good time then they can use this option perfectly because even players are professionals but still humans and many things can happen with them as well.

Real shame about Liverpool going out. I thought they were by far the better team in the 90 minutes and when Athletico got the goal in injury time my heart sank and I'm not even a Liverpool fan, but then it was disallowed anyway for offside. Once Firmino got the goal in Extra Time I thought that was it but Liverpool just went to sleep and Madrid capitalised on that. Even though Liverpool are almost certainly going to win the league I can't help but feel they could have won so much more and gone down in the history books with a lot of trophies and records broken but I fear they might not break the points record in the Premier League now as I can see them losing a bit of their fight and dropping more points (but not enough to through away the title.

So surprised about the results,,, but I actually also am more surprised Superbru picks the Full Time result, I thought this was a Regular Time pick, in which case I would for sure have gone a different results (not that it matters as I still thought Liverpool would win).

Simeone tactics is not > Klopp.

Strikers poor finishing, Oblak very good and Adrian VERY bad.

Just to be clear, I think that this is an injustice and that the better team turned out, but...
AM with defensive tactics without any the desire to attack scored 3 goals. Liverpool who has "best" defence line with TAA, Gomes and VVD conceded 3 easy goals in the last 15 minutes of the game.
Liverpool at one moment have a positive result and they were one foot in the next round, they were supposed to close the match and dedicate to protecting his net but no they play like an amateur at this moment.
So, Simeone definitely has a weaker team than Klopp but Simeone wins in both of his games.
in the end: if you want to win, you must not lose! from one famous comic book

Sorry Liverpool fans, but I'm glad Atletico got through, even though I think their style will never win them anything. Who likes to see negative football and diving and complaining people? Anyway, this is sort of revenge from Spain, but I'm more focused on my own team tonight (whom Liverpool knocked out of course) and I will think we have a good chance if we somehow get paired up with Atletico. Of course, we have to win tonight first!

Sorry to all Liverpool supporters, but I must post this here  Grin

Whatever, obviously who was the better team but tactic was crucial. This and first leg says Simeone > Klopp

So, Superbru count result after extra time? it seems that no one got points from this game.

My heart's been having quite a bit of nerves tonight, but luckily in a good way. I get annoyed by Gini every now and then but glad he got that one in. Oblak's having a monster night, but it's 55th minute and we're pounding on the doors. Something's got to give. I'm counting on 3-0, though Atletico is super organised. Exactly 4-4-2 as soon as we give them a second. Thank God our WBs are better with targeting this time. Salah's had a few tries to but no curling success.

Costa off for Llorente almost forgot he's here now. Plenty more time. Come on you REDS.
