This from the asicminer thread:

Quote
*If* they taped-out on Jan 20, and the fab started making the mask straight away it wouldn't be finished until late February at the earliest assuming that the fab will shut down for a week at the beginning of February. Then they have to actually make the wafers, slice them, package them, bump them and test them. If all that goes as fast as practically possible, and the tests results are good enough, then they can produce the chips in volume. I think with everything going about as well as could be expected they might have chips in volume by early April, not earlier. Then they've got to put them on PCBs and do final packaging.

If they have working miners in volume by the end of April they will have excelled themselves. Anyone who hopes for significantly sooner is going to be disappointed.

Now, see why I'm worried?

Silence is not a good operating strategy, IMHO.
If you bothered to read this thread you would already know the BA forums are at http://ecointalk.net/ not here.

Secondly, there is no point posting updates unless something has actually changed, it's not like a newspaper where you have daily space to fill.

True enough, however if left to their own speculation for too long, this board seems to go full retard FAST...

One of two things has happened since their last update.

1. They taped-out and have a chance to still deliver on time.
2. They missed the tape-out date and thus cannot deliver on time.

99% chance #2 has happened.

what? can't do that?  Why not?  If you bothered to read this thread you would know they have been silent on tapeout.

You mean they can't tell us what they have done since early Jan and where they are at?  As I said, their right to do that but not a good business strategy for the future.

Reading through the news posts on their websites, it sounds like they had to completely redesign the asic to go from 64 cores to 99 cores, and adjust the closck frequencies accordingly.  Their delivery deadlines for batch 1 seem to be late april early may.

Frankly, that's all the information I need right now.  the rest is just noise until they have something they're comfortable sharing.

Where do you see that batch1 delivery has changed? Apr/May is for batch 2. "This is a PRE-ORDER (Batch 2), available for dispatch at end of April 2014"
Yes they added more cores but where does it say they had to do a "complete redesign"?
Their January 3rd new post implied batch 1 was May 1st.  Perhaps I misunderstood.  http://www.blackarrowsoftware.com/store/batch-1-closed.html

All the unit does is receive work and distribute it to the various unrolled cores.  Adding more cores requires scaling out the control system to address them, and the health monitoring systems to watch them.  That pretty much touches everything on the chip.  Maybe redesign was a poor choice of words; they had to edit, modify, and refine most major components of their design.

I'm still very excited for this chip, and I'm glad they're getting it right instead of rushing it out the door.

edit:  They also mentioned in their next news post why they were making the changes.  http://www.blackarrowsoftware.com/store/minion-c-driver-is-now-available.html

Thanks for your condescending input.  Asking for clarification is not getting one's panties in a bunch.  I and others have asked nicely for weeks on their forums and social media sites for clarification and gotten nothing but equivocations and assertions that everything is on schedule, all the while showing no actual proof of progress, unless you consider a CAD rendering proof of progress, in which case I've got a bridge to sell you.

At a certain point patience runs thin, and we're there.   We're ~30 days from scheduled delivery and, last time I checked the hashing rate of a heatsink was 0.

They can answer a simple question and snap a couple of pictures related to where they're at in production without slowing down development.  Any sane person would think that a simple, honest, update at this point would not be too much to ask.

Seconded. Surely taking two minutes to post an update wouldn't kill them? These people are all reading from the same tired, bad script it seems.

You have a duty to keep your customers informed (good news or bad news). That is assuming you understand ethics...

So Black Arrow Software, do you have any?

It's back now.

yep and they're still not answering questions on status.  simple enough to answer whether or not they've gone to tapeout.  similar questions posted to their social media pages are being pulled down.

this is not looking promising in terms of an on-time delivery, or a minor delay, for that matter.  They've got nothing to show with one month until delivery but a heatsink and some CAD drawings of the cases - and won't answer questions.   If there is more, snap a few pictures, for crying out loud, instead of giving BS answers like this one from their forum, posted by staff today in a thread asking for an update:

"Updates will be posted when they are available, i can understand your points however, but i prefer well working product instead of couple of shiny pictures myself. I can make you a picture of thousands different parts in 3d, will it make you more happy?"

Simply put, that's crap.  customers are asking for updates, and rightfully so at this point, as this is looking very bad at this point in the timeline.

an honest update for those people that have in good faith sent thousands of dollars is not too much to ask.  if you're going to be late, fine, but it's time to level with your customers, BA.

don't get your panties in a bunch, i would rather have them work on the product`s then waste time posting pics / answer every question 100 times over.

The people that post the pic's and answer question are NOT the the ones who work on the Minion or anything else, they are there to answer questions from customers, that's there job! It only takes a few minuets at the end of a day or work week to pass on a bit of info to these people, yes we taped out,no we haven"t,we need to do this or that first....it's hardly going to slow anything down..
