I think his career is totally over now since we can't see a furious Donaire as same as before. Age is showing up and that's the reason why he keep losing to much younger opponents.

I hope his wife will tell him that, he is listening to his wife and also a fighter herself for a boxer the last to give up is the mind and the heart, on this match his speed and power are not there anymore I hope he and his family will see this fight and decide to give up, we all want Donaire to have a graceful exit but two successive losses where he is badly beaten is not a motivation to continue, he is multiple champions, it has been a great journey after he won the title against Vic Darchinyan with a one-punch, fifth-round knockout (KO), the best time is now we don't want him to get badly injured in his next fight.

For sure her wife tell him to consider retirement but I guess Nonito is the one arranging a fight for his self then just tell it to her wife that he like to fight for some particular fighter. Its his passion so I guess her wife just supporting Donaire this is the reason why he still on the canvass fighting.

But as of the moment he got 2nd straight losses so I guess this is enough. Nonito need to retire before his career and health will be ruined since he can continue his passion by teaching new generation of Filipino fighters which have potential to became a world champions in future.

I don't think anyone here expected Donaire to lose, but it turns out the opposite happened. We thought Santiago would be a good match for Donaire's target to KO his opponent, but Santiago has matured and knows how to play the game well. He clearly knew how to beat Donaire, resulting in a unanimous decision win.

What can I say, I guess it's time for Donaire to hang up his gloves. He is already old, and it's evident he doesn't have the same activity he had in the past. To think that Santiago isn't even a top contender, and he still defeated Donaire via UD, that's enough to conclude his boxing journey is over.

Congratulations to Santiago! It was a good win for him, and now he is the champion.

It seems that Donaire having a hard time against the smaller Santiago here.

Fight is over, but let's see, I'm on the side of Nonito, but it seems that Santiago might have pull the first upset of this fight. Let's see what the score will be, good strategy by Santiago to last the full 12 rounds. And what we are saying, as the fight goes to distance, Donaire might have a problem.

Edit: 115-113, 116-112 and 116-112 for the winner and brand new WBC world champion, Alexandro Santiago.  Sad

Similar to what I have already mentioned, Nonito Donaire is old already and his knees are not as strong as before when he was younger. Also after the knockout by Inoue it was speculated that he will not be the same fighter anymore. Tonight we have witnessed this. Donaire should now retire, I reckon.

It has caught up with Nonito Donaire, and although Santiago is a huge underdog, Donaire can't get his hands and he was beaten to the punch by the younger guy who we thought is going to be an easy fight for Nonito. But as you have said, Nonito is old and his knees are no longer there in a long fight.

It was also head scratching why the sportsbooks were offering him as the favorite.

Hopefully there are those who loves to go to the underdog irrespective of their names and bet on Santiago here. If yes, then it's a good odds specially if you bet good money. So congrats. If only we can advise Nonito to retire, then that might be the best decision he will have as a boxer. He has nothing to proved already. He has accomplished a lot in his career and could be a future HOF.

Yes, him and his wife should have a sit down and maybe it's time for Nonito to give up his boxing and maybe focus on other things. Not sure though if Nonito has contract with Richard Schaefer. And if he has then maybe just 1 fight in the contract and that's it for Nonito.

Really hard to see Nonito in this stage, we thought that he is still the stronger, faster, but it seems his timing is off here and Santiago found a chink in his armor that's why he has a good time hitting Donaire and constructing his face after the time.

This lose is hopefully a realization for him that he really need to retire while he is healthy since he already got a lot of achievements on his career and  he don't need to add anything.

Its dangerous for his age and current condition if he continue to fight since he might suffer a health issue if he continue to receive heavy damage from his body.

Perhaps they think that Donaire has still some fire in his belly in this fight. But as we say, fighters is already good in their last fight. And we have seen the he was completely destroyed by Inoue, knocking him out in just 2 rounds.

So I guess another Filipino legend will have to retire now at age 40. I do agree that he shouldn't be taking damages. So most likely, Moloney who said that he wants to fight Donaire, will have to contend for Santiago for a 2 belt unification fight next.

For sure many of us here lost our bet on Nonito Donaire. He can still pull the trigger but it didn't put a dent on Santiago. This guy is tough as he was able to survived the first couple of rounds wherein Donaire still has the strength and usually he does knockout his opponent in the first 4-5 rounds.

But it will be a disadvantage for his as his legs might not be there when the fight goes to middle up to the end, for 12 rounds. His age definitely shows in this fight. Not saying that he should retire already, only him and Rachel can decide what's good for him. But he can't take a beating like this at 40 years old, just saying.

Nonito was most taller, So he get more range as compared to other people. The shorter boxer will be easy for the Nonito, he can crush the short boxer using his hand power. In addition he had a power punch compared to the Santiago.Santiago had win many old experience boxer using his power arm. This fight will against the two power arm fighter. So the game winner will be the maximum punch player. The Nonito should win the game against the Santiago to prove his power against the most powerful player. This will make them to prove his power and make other to think about the match, even this help the Nonito to get the championship.

Nonito Donaire could win this fight easily because of his natural speed and power but the problem here is if he can still manage to take punches and managed to survive up to 12 rounds of non-stop action. Because as we know, he is no longer feeling like his old self, and taking multiple power punches is way more harder than before. Most likely he will higher his chance to win when Santiago distances himself and will not gonna choose to throw multiple power punches throughout the rounds because he is scared of the counter punches from Donaire.

I'm pretty confident that Donaire could still survive in a 12 round judging on Santiago's style of boxing. I mean he's the kind of boxer who does not have a good footwork and head movements and he's not a knock out puncher as well, it is a perfect thing of an opponents disadvantage for Donaire as he still has the speed and a bit of power is still there regardless of his age. Donaire does not need to knock his opponent down, he just need to play smart as he is out of his prime already and It was all evident from all his previous fights that he's easily gassed out in the later rounds - so that could turn out to be an advantage for Santiago to bring Donaire down.
The real question here is that, could Donaire still pull this one off and take his former vacant title?

I don't think it will reach the judges' scorecards. Santiago isn't a special boxer who poses a big threat to Donaire's goal of becoming the oldest champion. Look at Donaire's last 3 games (excluding Inoue); they were all KO wins, while Santiago's last 3 fights were won via decision. In case this fight goes to a decision, Donaire still has the edge, as he is taller and quicker. Age is just a number for him, as he has proven himself many times, and without Inoue in his path, things should not be hard for him.

You certainly got a point that Donaire got more options in this fight and it is almost safe to say that he got the control on what could likely happen to the fight, it is not guaranteed of course, but since we are talking about chances, then we cannot deny that Donaire indeed got the upper hand and advantages in this fight. While for Santiago, his only chance to secure a win is to set a tone as early as he can until the fight ends without stumbling along the way and if he can give a knockout, then why not if it's what is best for him because he too is campaigning to be a champion.

Message @Hhampuz if you are looking for a CM!
So the risk is there as the fight goes longer for him and for Santiago he might want to prolong the fight and test Nonito's stamina.
It's the right strategy to be made, considering Donaire is older now; he might slow down as the fight goes longer. However, that's a big task for Santiago, as he needs to prevent the heavy punches of Donaire. Since Donaire is a counter-punching guy, the fight might be boring if he does not engage. I don't see a scenario that will give the fans enjoyment, but if it's the strategy, then there's nothing we can do but watch.

In the era that we are in now, boxers are much more interested to have the belts by having the much easier routes without involving themselves in a toe-to-toe confrontation fights which the fans wanted as that is much more entertaining. Some of these boxers now are not really inclined to be named as one of the strongest boxers in their era because boxing industry nowadays became more and more business instead of an entertainment sport.

That said, it's understandable if Santiago will resort into a boring fight where he will just fight to survive and will settle for the points instead because confronting and challenging Donaire is not really a good idea because only few managed to do that and had a successful run afterwards. Keeping up with him is another thing, so most probably, Santiago will start his gameplan in the mid rounds.

You are right, more on winning no matter how you take that win, what is important is you win the fight.

If Santiago will execute that kind of fight plan, the chance of winning is better. Considering Donaire's age, there's already limitation
on his movements, and pushing the fight to the decision calls, he can surely manage to hit and run and make some good points
and reserve those in his favor to win by UD to earn the belt.

It might be ugly and some boxing fans will not appreciate their way but for them, a win is a win and there's nothing greater than that.

Now about Santiago and Donaire, we all know that the latter may have some problems along the way mainly in the late rounds specially if he already poured his strengths in the early to middle rounds just to make the fight end much sooner. And if Santiago can survive that without being knocked down, I think he can make that as an advantage while the latter is already tired at that point. Furthermore, there's no favorite here in the eyes of the judges because both of them is seeking for the same belt.

We are going to find that out tomorrow as this fight might end early, considering it's an underdog fight. Currently, the moneyline odds for Donaire to win are 1.59. If he wins via decision, the odds would be 3.85. I'm wondering why there are no knockout odds yet. If anyone knows a sportsbook that has those odds, kindly share it here or just DM me.

If we are looking for early KOs, we might consider betting on these 3 possible outcomes with corresponding odds:

Round 1 @ 67
Round 2 @ 67
Round 3 @ 51

I wanted to think that way also, that Nonito will win this fight easy but looking at the record of Alejandro Santiago, even though he has 3 defeats, none of them are of stoppage.  So we can think that Santiago is a tough fighter with a good amount of stamina.  It would be easy to say that this guy can be KO'ed by Donaire easily if Donaire is still at his prime but no matter how I think of it, there is a possibility of decline of performance due to aging.

There is a possibility that Donaire can KO Santiago but I don't think that it will be that high.

Yes, he is very tough cookie to crack, I have seen his highlights as well, he is known as "Peque" because he is small but don't be deceived by it because he can really fight and this is a big opportunity for him to become a world champion.

And for sure, Santiago's camp thought about Donaire's age and maybe their strategy is to just stay in the pocket and not get knockout early. And see how Donaire's legs is. Because when we aged, specially for boxers, his legs are the first one to give in. We have seen that even to the legend Manny Pacquiao. Later on in his career, he always complains about leg cramps and most likely it is the first sign that they are showing signs of ageing.

And you are right, because sport bookies are putting Donaire to win with the Over 10.5 rounds @1.53. So meaning they think that this fight is going to the judges scorecard and that's how Donaire is going to win in this fight. If we believed that Donaire can win via knockout and this fight not going to the distance then, the Under 10.5 rounds is very much attractive at 2.38.

Still couple more days to put our bet guys, and hopefully we will hear, "And the new WBC bantamweight champion - Nonito "The Flash" Donaire".  Grin
