thanks.  In that case I vote for 3. d4

Is it ok if I change to team Boolberry after though?

Honestly I don't like the idea of people switching sides, especially after they have already recommended a move. When people switch sides it can add confusion and cause some to question the motives for doing so.

If you are worried about Monero having a larger team, don't worry. I expected that. We all know that Monero has a much larger community than Boolberry.

OK then, I think I will just sit on the sideline and chew oranges then. gg

I was not trying to be mean. You are welcome to stay and talk CryptoNote if you wish. We just don't want to set the precedent of allowing chess players to switch sides mid game. While I appreciate your interest in Team Boolberry, if you started out helping Team Monero then you should remain on their team.  My goal is to be impartial. If someone wanted to leave Team Boolberry and join Team Monero mid game I would say the same thing.

Agree

blobafett2's "suggestion" (not sure if he was trolling) of Bb5 is not terrible but I don't think it is to our advantage to trade bishops this early.

it's a real opening, made famous by a 16th century Spanish priest, and one of Kasparov's favorites:

Yeah I know. I played it in high school chess club.

Sorry, just trying to help Sad

In that case, welcome to the Monero team.

Team Monero (white pieces) vs. Team Boolberry (black pieces)
white to move

1.e4   c5
2.Nf3  d6

Based on the votes in this thread Team Boolberry has chosen to play d6

Now it is time for Team Monero to respond. Votes will be counted at 0:00 UTC tomorrow.

Monero can play Bb5, the infamous Ruy Lopez.  And Boolberry can't play the Morphy defense with c5/d6 they're in check.

Another name for the Ruy Lopez is "The Spanish Torture"

Smooth... maybe a bit ironic? Wink

Daniel Bernstein seems well qualified to make that decision. Maybe he will share his thoughts with us. Is he on bitcointalk?

I don't think so but not positive.

My single biggest question after reading the entire paper is the how did they choose their elliptic curve constants?  The protocol appears sound; who chose the constants?  Will there be a plan for choosing new constants in the future if needed?

As I understand it the constants were chosen by Daniel J. Bernstein. I think this is noted in the white paper but may have been missed during that initial review when cryptonote suddenly dropped out of the sky.

I'm not a cryptographer so I may be getting some of this wrong.

I know that Monero and Boolberry did not create CryptoNote but have improved on it. Any guesses for the reason the CryptoNote creators selected a relatively new cryptographic hash function?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secure_Hash_Algorithm

I've not seen any answer to this, though you could try asking on their forum. That can be hit or miss. Some of the people posting there on behalf of "cryptonote" obviously have technical knowledge but others are just clueless.

The second question may or may not even matter (I have no reason to assume there is something wrong with the chosen hash function).  Only because of the importance of the decision am I wondering about the selection.  I have not registered on the CryptoNote forums but may do so at some point.

Thank you for your time.

Now it is time for black (Team Boolberry) to respond. I will count votes again at 0:00 UTC tomorrow
