I have always kept my gambling activity private. It's not because I care what others might think, I just value my privacy especially when it comes to financial matters. As long as it is not hurting anybody then there is no reason for people to judge you for being a gambler or anything else you do in your private life. Gambling isn't some evil thing that only degenerates do. It is a normal activity that normal people do for enjoyment.

This now triggered me to come ask here whether you cares about what people says or sees you as when gambling, I know there are people who don't know you from time or who doesn't believe that you are a gambler and if it happens that you came across such people and their reaction towards you goes other way round would you care about it or you just totally ignore them?

If someone can give us a big reason why should we care about other people, then I will go to him. Smiley But there's none.

We don't owe an explanation to those people. Just do your usual things and don't mind them.

It can also be applied to other doings in our life. We don't need to meet anyone's standards. Just mind our own.

If I were in your shoes, instead of trying to defend what I choose to do with my time and money. I would scold him for invading my privacy. People should know their boundaries, gambling is for fun and like everything else in the world can become bad when abused. It’s obvious your friend has a low opinion of gamblers which means soon he’s going to start having low opinions of you.
P.S. Use a privacy screenguard when in public spaces or in company of others.

I do if these are my friends or relatives, but I don't if they're random people. I know what I'm doing and if I need an opinion from someone I'll ask for it.
In a situation where you get harassed by other people because you're a gambler just walk away, don't escalate this. Those who start things up with you are either dumb or they want things to escalate because they're bored or something.
In general I don't tell people that I gamble, unless I see that they also do to avoid these situations.
There are people who are really that sensitive into those words that they might be able to hear around and there are ones who dont really care on what others been saying as long they have
done or do something on the things that they do like. We do know that when it comes to gambling then people would really be having that negative approach and views into it on which it isnt really that shocking anymore that negativity would be always there. Its true that it would really be just fine if those words could be heard from your loved ones or relatives but if it goes from other people
then you might be having those reactions which you might be ending up on having some argumentations but actually it isnt really that much of an issue as long you do
find yourself playing gambling just for fun.

In terms of family it'll be hard to overlook, as they'll be helpful when we are facing some disputes. Not just gambling, a lot more things could be an issue to the gambler in future. So, being attentive to what our family have to say regarding gambling, can help a gambler to understand what to do, whether to quit or continue the process. Most times our family may have noticed a symptom in our life, that made them comment about the gambling habit of the gambler. Which is not wrong to add response on a person's personal life. On the other hand, not every stranger would be considered as not making valuable response to a gambler's life. The only dispute is that, separation will definitely erupt, as gamblers don't like hearing such things, especially from a non gambler. As a gambler when people begin to talk, I don't respond or go into deep argument. The only thing I do is to have a rethink if the person is adding some meaningful advice to me or I'm I getting out of control in gambling.

I've learned this late in life that bothering about what people think of you or what you do is just a pain in the ass and an absolute waste of time. That is, unless, you were specifically aiming for their recognition/acceptance or something in the first place. Which, btw, should not be a regular thing to expect from anyone on the street, unless you're a politician in which case you do indeed need literally everyone on the street's recognition.
You can only be bothered if you are doing something wrong or if they get affected by what you are doing. Personally, there is a few people in my life that comment on my gambling activity but I don't give a sshh on them, yeah a total waste of time if you try to argue with them and I only think that it is not wrong to gamble if you do it for yourself and is trying to escape temporarily from reality, in short entertaining yourself!

Now in cases where you do need their recognition or something similar, then that's when you start thinking about how to explain, how to reach a consensus, or just a middleground for the both of you. There's usually one in most cases, especially if you're both important to each other. In OPs case I reckon it's just blind knowledge of gamblers (which is what media portrays it to be, so I can't exactly deny that it's true, but not the entirety) but I reckon a simple explanation and a simple look at OP himself can explain how it's a big generalization.
I think there is no point to argue or explain to anyone, don't owe it to them, we have different path in life, different hobby, different decisions, and all they need is to leave you alone and think about their own business.

Let's discuss amicably
I care about it considering my gender. There is a kind of way that people in my environment will stigmatize females who are known to be gamblers. They are seen as irresponsible and exhibiting behaviors they are not supposed to exhibit because majority of the people around me believe that gambling is mostly a male thing and not something a female should get involved with. For that reason, asides the few times I have tried on a slot machine in a general place, I cannot make it a regular thing so I do not get noticed.

Well, is it their money I am losing? Definitely not. But those who are hiding their gambling activity has their own reason; religious beliefs, accessibility of gambling sites, negative impression, and more. We just have our own reason just like those who likes to brag about it and those who are showing to public that they are into gambling. On my end, I prefer not to tell anyone to save myself from questions of why, how much am I losing or winning, which platforms, etc. There are just times silence is a better option. People will be curious about it but won't be curious enough to try it for themselves therefore, it'll just be a waste of time explaining myself.
Why think about what people say about us, is it somehow capable of influencing our well-being, or any other aspects of our lives?
There are things that will never change, people will always talk about other people, but they forget about it as soon as they stop talking about it. People have a lot of daily worries and generally people worry more about what other people think about them. And if you are worried about what people will say about you gambling, then try not to let those who don’t need to know about it find out.

The most of the advice to the gamblers was for the benefit of the life, the people spending their time to make us live the peaceful life.Because sometimes gambler use their own real money to the gambling site, using the free money alone make the gamblers to feel comfortable. But due to the greedy the gamblers will do the betting using the important money of the essential purpose like fees of their children or the month rent for their house. If they made the win,it will managed and the additional money he get for the other purpose expenses. But if he loss the funds,he need to get more loan for the compensation for the loss money and to handle the loss.

and if a gambler loses and people who just peep at your phone might just tell colleagues you lost your month's rent money because you gambled it or so. not that i care but because people judge you because of your failures, this could cause anxiety.

if you live in a close-knit family your elder might just pay a visit and advise you to stop gambling. you wouldn;t wonder then where the elders haave heard of it. the nosey little fella who just peep at your phone now is telling everyone about it.
Definitely, losses would be longer to talk about with, than your reason of why you are gambling. We cannot control what other people would tell about us; some would be positive and some would be the other way around. If they're non-gamblers then they won't get whatever point you want them to absorb. They could take your winning negatively if they will borrow and won't be giving it back. Transparency is a doubled edged sword which is where we should be careful of.

      -  When I gamble as much as possible, I don't want anyone who knows my friends or my family to know. But if anyone knows this, it's only my husband, and he also knows that I don't often play gambling either.

It's just mine because it's better for me to keep it to myself that only I know because this is what I think will be better in reality, which will not affect other people or my relationships with my other close friends; this is just our opinion.

Well for me, if the person who says something about your gambling really matters to you, you will definitely listen and care about they saying to you. It means that they also care about what you're doing. This is kind of different from your situation as it's just a stranger who's talking about your gambling. When someone talks about your gambling situation remember that you're the one in control of your decisions.
Gambling is considered a bad thing in the eyes of society so when someone finds out about your gambling, they will definitely criticize you. So of course you have to take care of these things and you have to be better in their eyes to stop criticizing you. Because respect is very important for a person and gambling destroys people's respect. So you should always try to keep your gambling a secret so that no one can criticize you. So I personally care if anyone is talking about my gambling

Well, we know that gambling can ruin someone's life by starting financially which would lead to a domino effect on their mental, emotional, and physical health. So why there's still casinos and gambling still exist? It is because it still helps the economy by just simply paying taxes. The thing is gambling still has a good impact on society, if you are a responsible gambler you don't have to listen to anyone say (negative opinions) since it's your money, your rules. Still, be open to conversations like from your family asking you to stop gambling, but yeah I agree that keeping it on your own would be the best move.

Not exactly. They sometimes want to tease you, they expect a reaction. They don't care about you gambling and sometimes don't even have an opinion, but they see you doing it and see it as vulnerability that can be taken advantage of. If they saw you smoking, drinking, eating unhealthy food, playing a game on your phone they'd probably act the same way. Sometimes it's not about what you do but what people you surround yourself with.

I rarely care about these things, although it's hard to ignore them completely. After all this is a mild attack. They're verbally poking you and if that comes at the wrong time, you can overreact.

I think it will only affect our minds and will not affect our lives as a whole, people care too much about something that basically doesn't really matter, but on the other hand it doesn't hurt to deduce what they are really saying and  where their ideas lead, whether their criticism and opinions for us will really be useful for us or not at all, it depends on how you can distinguish the ideas that come in.

For people who don't really  care about what other people say about them then I don't think they will make any changes, but if you are one of those people who are easily annoyed and feel uncomfortable with other people's comments even if they are important then it seems that you will prefer to make changes, in the sense of not repeating the same thing for the potential occurrence of the same situation, so I think it depends on yourself whether you are comfortable or not with other people's comments..

Basically we cannot avoid anything that happens in our lives, one example is as you describe in this thread. in short, sometimes we can't avoid hiding the habits we often do, one of which is gambling. there are times when we try to cover up our habits, but in the end the people closest to us find out. well, haven't we experienced this situation regardless of gambling or not?

Now we are talking in a gambling context, there are many people close to me who don't know that I like to gamble. so far, everything is normal and there are no obstacles or problems whatsoever. there are also a few people who know that I like to gamble, and that doesn't matter to me, we even have normal relations without anyone putting each other in a corner. there are also some people who don't need to know that I like to gamble. for example, my children and my parents. why, yeah, so they don't worry about what I'm doing. avoid negative thoughts about gambling. for my children, it's not time for them to know something they shouldn't know. the point is, we have to sort and choose according to our portions.

Referring to the case of this thread, I tried to put myself in a situation like the one you experienced, in fact I wouldn't mind if someone thought negatively about what I did, whatever it is, it's their right to judge it and I also have the right not to care, let alone  have to explain it. for me, gambling is something that is private. except, if we play it with friends of the same frequency. the point is that I don't have to harm anyone, let alone my family, and I spend money from my own pocket, without having to bother other people. as long as it is still possible and remains in the right context. I don't need to worry about anything, and I don't need to explain anything. for me, it's that simple.

As they say: at the age of 20 I was worried about what they thought of me, at the age of 40 I didn’t care what they thought of me, at the age of 60 I realized that no one ever thought about me  Grin
In general, this works, but I would say that you should listen to the opinions of relatives - if there are healthy relationships in the family, then most likely they wish you well, even if they are wrong in their opinion.

This now triggered me to come ask here whether you cares about what people says or sees you as when gambling,

You could start looking at what people say about you when you are not profiting in gambling but if you are, the people who would see you will want to join your groof to see if you can predict to them the right game to bet on. You know success has many followers but failure is scorned at. So those gamblers who are always losing their game are those that will be worried about what people are saying and not the people who are winning bets that they stake.

Though you are actually correct because those people who don't make any profits from gambling are all classified as in irresponsible gambler whereas those people who are making profits from it all have people that are disturbing them to share their games with them so that they can also secure winning for themselves. Success they said has many branches and leaf around them, people would always want to come patch on them to take the coolest moment of their lives, what a world!
