5   Lewis Hamilton   GBR   MERCEDES   28
6   Max Verstappen   NED   RED BULL RACING RBPT   25
.

I am very surprised by the result of these two heroes of last season???  I can't even believe this is happening.  After all, all last year they were not equal.  And now we are witnessing a completely unique situation.  Both riders unanimously dropped down 5 positions at once.
Indeed, F1 racing delights us with such unusual events. Smiley

Great win from Charles and great win for Ferrari.

Happy to see RedBull DNF again but not happy for Max ...but I guess karma is karma no matter what.

Charles Leclerc's 71/78 (91% of points available) in the first three races is the best start to a season for a Ferrari driver since...

...Michael Schumacher in 2004 (30/30 points in the first three races)!

Well , it seems that we can already crown Charles as the new champion if we take that stats for what it stands for so it's time for F1 to become RED AGAIN.

I think it's too early to talk about the outcome of the championship, but at the moment Leclerc's advantage looks total:

1   Charles Leclerc   MON   FERRARI   71
2   George Russell   GBR   MERCEDES   37
3   Carlos Sainz   ESP   FERRARI   33
4   Sergio Perez   MEX   RED BULL RACING RBPT   30
5   Lewis Hamilton   GBR   MERCEDES   28
6   Max Verstappen   NED   RED BULL RACING RBPT   25
7   Esteban Ocon   FRA   ALPINE RENAULT   20
8   Lando Norris   GBR   MCLAREN MERCEDES   16
9   Kevin Magnussen   DEN   HAAS FERRARI   12
10   Valtteri Bottas   FIN   ALFA ROMEO FERRARI   12

The gap from the nearest serious competitor is 41 points, and this is a lot, as it allows you to make one big mistake (for example, get into an accident and not score at all) and still remain the first. Mercedes is still very lucky and comes in second place. For them, this is a very good result.

Indeed Ferrari shows incredible success. Probably many fans of other teams did not expect this at all.
Here is what Charles Leclerc says: “To be honest, judging by our calculations, at this track we should have been inferior to Red Bull in speed, but perhaps we should reconsider these calculations.
It turned out that we are stronger than expected, and this was a pleasant surprise. Last season was very difficult for us, but this year the team managed to build a reliable and fast car, create a powerful engine, and my task is to provide quality feedback to the engineers so that they understand what I want to achieve from the F1 -75.
I am incredibly happy and proud to be driving for Ferrari. Our results confirm that this is a great team, because even last year it was impossible to guarantee that we would return to this level, but we did it.
Now we have to keep attacking, because the season will be long, but we started it very well.”

It seems to me that they themselves did not expect such results.  Smiley

Right, I have to stop it with this Verstappen insistence (not even my favourite guy) and start to acknowledge that this really could be (or already is) Leclerc's season. Tsunoda let me down again -- thought I'd push him into my Top 10, should have put Gasly on instead. And 2 of my podium picks didn't even finish the race ha!

Well done to darbit for claiming Australia, don't suppose anyone watched?

Qualifications were not easy to watch.
Two crashes and some drama happening with yellow and red flags going on in the Melbourne track for the early morning action.
Looks like Leclerc is posed to take this race as they looked the most comfortable in turn 11 where almost all drivers had issues going into the races so far.

Here you can bet on the final race starting tomorrow:

@darxiaomi @Ulven interesting, now I'm wondering if I should change my mind. Wasn't paying too much attention to odds but I feel like they haven't even shifted one bit from 2 weeks ago when I looked at them. Is that normal in F1 that everything is pretty much set in terms of likelihood despite news, updates, driver reports etc?

I'm still sticking with Verstappen pole.

I think Ferrari is the favorite to win the race!!!

It looks that way after first practice, Sainz half a second clear of the Red Bulls. Leclerc would probably have been up there with him too, if he hadn't gone off track on his new softs.

i dont think Mercedes can win this week i say they are going to improve a lot and maybe be more closely to the two teams ahead.

First practice suggests otherwise, Hamilton back in seventh. I do think they'll recover some time on the Ferrari and Red Bull during the season, but it's probably too early right now.

MMM this its normal in F1, and also its good for the engineers to have better salary, the key part its how you replace the enginer who left the team.

I repeat what i said i other post, lets see this weekend if Mercedes improves or not.

I read your previous post and concluded that you are a candidate for the victory of Mercedes led by Hamilton, right? I think Ferrari is the favorite to win the race!!!OP You can watch this video of the 2019 Australian Track:

I dont know what can be in this Australian GP, lets see if the new cars bring some emotions and no make a boring race.

I think the main problem here its the short DRS zone we have. But with the new cars they say are better for following so maybe you can reach the DRS zone more closely to the car ahead and make more overpass.

Ferrari should be advantaged over RBR in this track since it is faster in slow-mid speed turns.
Even simulations are saying so.

Things are looking worse for Mercedes as the season goes on and this is just the beginning of Toto's woes.

We all remember the duel between Hamilton and Verstappen in 2021. But the new season starts very interesting. I think there are still a lot of surprises in store for us on the 2022 circuits. I wonder which of the riders has the most bets in the bookmakers on the races in Australia. I haven't found any data yet, but I'll look online. However, only 3 days left, let's wait and see. Smiley

However... I believe that 2022 is more for Ferrari, maybe Hammilton's dream has to be postponed.

It is not too late for Mercedes if they can fix their porposing they will be back and maybe the best team of the year again.

They have a lot of problems caused by it and if they can fix them they will be a lot faster.

The simulation was "Mercedes 1 second ahead of everyone else".

Ayrton Senna was certainly a great racer.  Many F1 fans consider him the best driver in the history of these races.  And his death on the track has become literally a legend.
And now I consider Hamilton also almost an F1 legend for his many victories and excellent results.  And he has not finished his career yet, he can still surprise the fans.

They were very different times.... good drivers always appear in F1 and I'm sure many will also speak well of Schumacher and he was certainly a good driver.

Airton Senna was a person who "played" on the track, he had full control of the car, he was an excellent driver.

We can't say less about Hammilton, he is also very close to becoming an F1 legend and the technology he found in Mercedes has certainly helped him in this mission... good drivers don't consecrate themselves just for their talent.

However... I believe that 2022 is more for Ferrari, maybe Hammilton's dream has to be postponed.

I would like to be wrong, but it seems to me that we are talking about "fine" settings that will give some benefit but will not fundamentally change anything. At the moment Mercedes are playing a league lower than the leaders but it is still too early to accept the fact that this season they will not be fighting for the first place. Therefore, for some time we will hear such optimistic news.
It's mercedes we are talking about and they could change something at any moment. I can't really guarantee anything and it looks like they could be doing something much bigger than we expected of them to do. Rear wing would just give them a slight advantage versus previous weeks, but the proposing or whatever that is called is still a trouble for them.

The thing is, they have the engine turned down, dialed down just s other wouldn't have this problem, if they could find a way to fix it? Boy oh boy, they could turn the engine all the way up and they would be doing much much better. That's when you know you are in trouble if you are Ferrari or red bull. Not like they will be missing that forever, if other teams found it out somehow, Mercedes could find it as well, maybe it will take one more, maybe 3 more but one day they will figure that out for sure.

Mercedes claims to have seen problems due to rear wing settings.  Therefore, they are preparing some changes in the design of the wing for the races in Melbourne and competitions at the next stages.  They solve the problem of optimizing downforce for better wheel grip.  But the track coverage can be quite different.  So it is not known how they will succeed or not succeed.Huh
