On one hand, I think that the future of altcoins in the short term will be pegged to Bitcoin's. If the latter booms like it did in December last year, most of the altcoins will boom too in some degree.

In the long term, I think there will be some kind of natural selection and the worst tokens will end being worthless, after some price spikes. Privacy coins like Monero, DeepOnion etc. will always have a public imo, and solid high market cap projects that add real value like Sia and Icon can end mooning really hard like ETH did last year.

Altcoins will have future but not all the altcoins. The future of altcoins depends upon the coins you choose. In future few altcoins only survive most of the altcoin will vanish. At the same time new altcoins are also coming. Better go to coinmarketcap and select the top ten coins from the list and check the growth of that coins. In that select some coins and invest on those coins.

altcoin will still exist in the future and many new altcoins will launch. actually, this is our opportunity because we can gain more profit from the altcoin and we can use altcoin for our investment too. but we need to remember that every altcoin will need bitcoin to adjust their price and we need to know that if bitcoin is getting down, altcoin will follow too so we need to prepare if this is happening. we can do many things to prevent the bad situations that might happen in the future so we can know what will we need to do to prevent a big loss.

I also believe that in future of cryptocurrency, only altcoins with very good dev and technology will be able to survive the hurdles in the crypto community and the ones without good developer will likely no survive in crypto. The very good ones will continue to grow and become more stable.

Over so many altcoins exists and still existing, a lot are already down and not continued. There are also ICOs that are successful but not last long. So most probably, i guess after some time that bitcoin is widely spread worldwide, altcoins would be limitted to hundreds, all with important usage, which can be accepted along with the king coin bitcoin.
