Imho it depends from a situation and from luck. Gambling can be a way to make money. I can compare gambling to going to cinema to watch a movie. Cinemas are not only a kind of entertainment, but while watching a movie a person might learn something. Same is with gambling, it is not only for entertainment, but you can also learn from it, in some cases even earn from it. It depends from what you search in it. Right now I can go to casino, make a bet with a high probability of a win, lets say 1.02 for example. If I walk out with more money than I had, cant it be called making money then?

Actually what I know about this is that gambling as a means of survival is totally wrong to me, because that's the beginning step a man takes, that leads to addiction, it's actually true that if you remove the monetary aspect of gambling, like you wouldn't make a dime from it if you get it right, will definitely stop people from gambling because at the end of the day, we just have to tell ourselves the truth, that it's all about the money.

So the issue here is that most people including gambling addict sees it as a means of income which is wrong, as a sane individual, you should only gambles with what you can afford to lose, so that after trying your luck by gambling, if it doesn't goes your way, it wouldn't get to you psychologically. So that's the essence of gambling with what you can afford to lose.

We all have one plan with gambling, to make money, the hardship to get lucky in gambling is why people turn to getting fun out of gambling while risking some money that they can afford to lose, they have seen that it's almost impossible to make big money from gambling just because you feel like it.

Those who are screaming fun have no other choice, this is the only way to stay as a gambler or quit if they like, you don't have to be confused that gambling will get you rich, try it yourself I bet you will have some stories to share, there is no winner in this gambling space that have no bad story to share, it's all about experience.

The weak minded people will possibly rely on gambling at first, little did they know that gambling isn't a way to make money, it's unreliable and deceitful if you give it room, deceitful in terms of how you view what gambling is all about, you can easily lie to yourself, thinking you've finally find a way, to win over your poverty, but you aren't smart to know that millions of people are here before you, why aren't they rich yet?

It's all about the money, but the harder it is to make money from gambling is why many turn to softy with gambling, calling it a space to have some fun, I mean, what's there than to have some fun and risking few dollars? It's not as if we will keep winning, we just need to protect how much we risking.

Do you mean those people you are referring to is doing gambling just to meet other people? Have fund together? Build a network?

This is the first time I heard those as a reason why people gamble for fun and money is just a bonus.

Gambling for fun is just like gambling without expecting anything in return and this is not the mindset of a core gambler, a hard gambler believes in returns in a every gambling move he makes and the major aim for gambling is profit, most times I don't regard gamblers as fan of any club and I have a reason for that, most gamblers don't care if their favourite teams exist most time they even bet against their teams or avoid the team totally because of their money mindset, I assume that someone who gambles for fun is not a real gambler and such person stake will not be much because I believe that someone cannot use a large sum of money to gamble and still regard it as fun.

The money is just a bonus, it's not the main achievement for people to gamble.

In land based casino, people like to gamble because they can meet other people, build a network and having fun together, so they treat the money they spent are for investment. I say it's investment because there's a chance the other gambler might hire you or working together with you.

While in online casino, it's more for fun, build a network is really hard and most of them aren't interested too.

Yes gambling is fun but there is a possibility to earn money or get rich fast that's why people are interested in gambling besides having fun then what is the harm if you win something big by luck. But no matter how easy we think gambling is, gambling is not that simple.  For this the gambler must have fun as his main objective. otherwise gambling will have a great effect on him and he will be bound to become addicted to gambling. So there is no discount in gambling always be careful and gamble with always a fixed budget.

Of course, if the beginning is fun, if the result goes against it, then the end is not fun at all. Gambling is to earn money and win is our main objective and winning will make us feel better and enjoy gambling as much as we have no doubt. We learn to value time enough and value money so much that we don't waste time unnecessarily and risk money unnecessarily. Behind gambling we bet money as well as spend time just to earn profit by gambling. Earning profit by gambling is our only objective. For those who tell you that they gamble only for fun, you can ask them how much fun they still get from gambling when they lose.

Op has made some good point on his explanation about gambling for fun. It's not a big thing to understand. The trouble with people is that they forget easily about the importance of gambling for fun. Like Op stated the whole process of gambling is closely related to how we spend money on other utilities. The same thing applies to giveaway, paying for football matches, going to the mall or park etc. Such activities take up our money, and we don't regret paying for the fun we've earned there. Gambling isn't an exemption; the difference is the money casino promises to players. More like if a restaurant pays people for eating, lots of humans would overfeed there, just for the money reward. That's what is going on in casino. People are meant to enjoy the moment there, but due to the money it's quite hard for the players to focus and stick to the exact time for them to leave the vicinity. Which causes harm to the emotions of the gambler, and his loss of money.

I agree, gambling should be seen as a form of entertainment, and not a way to make money. It's important to set a budget or small amount for gamling, for example, you are going night out with friends, then you set aside $50, treating it like any other entertainment expense for the night like buying drinks or tickets. Treating gambling as other recreational activity, you can avoid financial stress and enjoyed with everyone.

This is a good way to explain it but also gambling for fun means really having fun while gambling and not doing it only as you want to make money. You can gamble for money at time and also gamble for fun other times. It doesn't mean that everytime that you're gambling that it has to be for fun or to make money. There are times when I need a feel good feeling which comes from dopamine that we get when gambling so I gamble and have a feel good time without thinking about losses.

Gambling for fun will not make you addicted and this is why gambling for fun is better than gambling to try to make money. If you're looking for money, there are better ways to get them and you can get the money without depending on your luck. Money needs working therefore if you get a job either a part time or a full time job, you can get salary and be living comfortably without depending on gambling for money.

I some how agree with you OP that gambling is for fun in the contest which you described it but I also agree with the quoter that its not for fun partially, on a critical thinking mode you both are correct.

Firstly I would love to digest what this concept of gambling for fun mean, in the case at which you Oshosondy explained we are not expecting to go in to gambling with the idea of wanting to make a living out of it but one could also have the intention to with a stash maybe for to facilitate his life style. but yeah what the quoter said is true too I have been asking myself lately, why I have to spend a bucks to play but at I really if I wish to experience some kind of feeling I must pay for it, maybe in paying for the service with they offer me not really the gamble the side benefit is that I could be luck enough one day and my payment will be returned as bonus in form of win.

However, every gambler should just decide for himself or herself how they want to handle gambling. Gambling is what it is; no matter whether a gambler handles gambling as fun or a means of earning money, the fact remains that they will definitely experience unpredictable losses and wins, and definitely the losses are always greater than the wins. 

I don't support the idea that gambling is a cool (sustainable) means of earning money. I can't deny the fact that sometimes I gambled with the intention of multiplying my money, but that doesn't make me forget that gambling is not really the right way to rely on as a source of income because it will cause the gambler more harm, such as becoming addicted and ending up losing all their money. 

Every gambler who gambles for fun could also have it in mind to win in their games because there is no one who prays to lose. Everyone always stays positive and hopes for winning despite having fun, but that doesn't mean that their primary reason for gambling is to generate more income for themselves. 

The most depressing thing for most of us is, how we handle our gambling results even though we tend to gamble for fun, how do we feel when we record the losses also, because that is also very important.
Why I mentioned that is that, sometimes even though we want to gamble for the fun of it, but when we lose we intend to be sad about it most especially when the loss amount is on the high side, so we must separate our emotions from fun because it should be fun at all time regardless if we win or lose, but in reality we are far from that and we should go back to the origin of what we take gambling for and also set the gap between fun and profits making.

I was almost going all out on this notion of gambling for fun and not a way to make money...but after reading the OP, I get what message is being converged here... gambling for fun isn't the literal meaning as this is more of an idiom to protect gamblers from not taking it hard on themselves....you know how some people get to hurt themselves after losing money because of gambling such that can it can get so bad and lead to depression or in some instances suicide...and this is where the  whole "Gambling for fun and not a way of making money" comes into play for users not to take things to heart, treat it as a material things that you can have or lose tomorrow ... otherwise don't get worked out by the literal meaning gambling is indeed about having fun

"Don't play with fire if you don't want to get burned" Likewise with gambling "don't gamble if you don't want to suffer losses". Because gambling is not the easiest activity to make money by betting, but rather the easiest activity to lose the money we have and replace it with fun. So it is natural that gambling is considered a form of entertainment that is played for fun, played fairly and wagered with an amount of money that we are ready to lose. And if not, or in other words you are gambling to make a profit, then you will experience at least two losses, namely the first loss is that you will not get any pleasure from the gambling you are doing, and the second you will experience financial losses, because in reality gambling not a place to make a profit. . So in the end all you get is a deep feeling of disappointment and regret, which can make you even more stressed and make you feel depressed. Because what you get is not the same as what you imagined before. And it doesn't stop there, if a gambling activity is not managed well and appropriately, then this activity will not only cause financial losses but also other negative impacts that can affect your life balance and mental health.

If you have told me that gambling is an activity to be self-reliant, I might agree, but you can't tell me that gambling is for fun; no one will use his money to lose; that is just the fact, and if really you are doing it for fun, I see no reason why you will get angry when you lose or even think of toping more money to play and get your money back; that shows that gambling is just a scheme to gain money, but people tend to deceive themselves by thinking gambling is for fun. I can assure you that there is no fun in losing; that is just a fact. 

All we need to understand about gambling is that it is a game of luck, so you should reduce your expectations of winning the game and focus on your budget. When you are up to the limit, whether you gain or lose, just leave immediately. Like me, when I am gambling, if I have gotten a little or a bit of the money I put in the game, I am definitely leaving and not continuing. I don’t emphasise getting twice or thrice of what I put in the game, which means the little I got is enough since it is not my money. I just played and won, which has helped me a long way not to get addicted to gambling.

Well, that's how it should be. But let's admit the fact that  majority are seeing gambling as a way to make money. One of the reason why many of us are becoming addicted, it's because of the desire to gain and setting aside the play for fun reminder. If there's no money involved it won't be that exciting, the possibility to gain huge in snap and can make a gambler an instant rich is what attract them the most.

But I do agree that gambling is not a way to make money and should be treated solely to have fun,
(if you win that's an incentives). However, we can't coerce everyone to do as we say since we have our own way of thinking. It's their money anyway, so let them spend their money that way they wanted. Because in the end they'll be the one to face the consequences of their action.

If we refer to the dangers of gambling then obviously the best decision to make is "don't gamble at all", this is the best choice if you absolutely do not want to lose money for nothing, and if you still want to engage in gambling then obviously the choice is that you must be able to accept the fact of losing at the end of the session and never gamble with the idea and purpose of "wanting to make money" because it is a bad idea that you can never achieve unless you are a croupier or casino owner yourself.

After all, casinos are a business to benefit the house in the sense that anyone who tries to take advantage of the situations and opportunities that exist in gambling then usually the opposite happens is that you will actually lose a lot of money slowly and sometimes it's not realized. One of the reasons why gambling is better as a place to seek entertainment because there is absolutely no certainty that can guarantee you to always win at the end of the session, and as you said I hope that most novice gamblers can understand about the facts that exist in gambling so that they are not lost or wrong way that ultimately makes them suffer a lot of problems in their lives.

If it were so easy to make money with gambling, why are there so many sites that offer gambling-related activities that are actually really profitable?
many users forget that gambling is really a mathematical and statistical discussion.
Much worse! many users don't know that some providers are so profitable that they don't list on the stock market... really, are there anyone who thinks they can beat this market?  it make me laughs

ok you can win and sometimes make money, but you have to have fun. if this is missing, change your hobby.
