Alonso understands well that he only needs a win in this match to take points from one of the main rivals at the top. Maybe Leverkusen slowed down at the beginning and picked up speed in the second half of the season. I think that's in line with their current situation with points not far from the top ranked Bundesliga teams. As long as their performance doesn't decline or they can defend well, there's no way they can't pick up speed to compete for the title at the end of the season.
My other guess is that when the transfer market reopens, they can add strength by bringing in some ammunition to strengthen what I said.
