Great to have you ChasingYourDream! Gridcoin's still a work in progress but it's gone far the past two months it's been in existence. I agree, Rob does a great job of improving the coin almost on a semi-daily basis. Only if he didn't have to worry about a job atop Gridcoin imagine how far we could be lol. But hope you enjoy the project as much as the rest of its supporters do.

Limones is right btw, that's how it works with Gridcoin for now to ensure that no one cheats out of using BOINC

I do not know everyone that on the dev team so I really need to compliment everyone else as well.  I'm under the impression that Rob does most if not all the coding though on the Windows side that is.  Regardless, the support has been incredible.  Maybe if things go really well Rob and the rest of the team can work on this full time.  It is certainly a worthy cause!

One quick question and I apologize in advance if this was listed before but there has been a great deal of changes so I want to make sure I understand how this works.  If I'm running three computers do I need to have a wallet installed on each computer?  From what I've read I believe that is the case but I want to be sure because I would prefer to have a single wallet if possible.

Hey, and welcome to Gridcoin!

Yes, you have to have a wallet on each computer. Each computer mines against the loopback address, and each wallet checks the computer it is on for BOINC usage. This prevents five computers from mining Gridcoin while one computer is running BOINC.

Thanks for the welcome and the information!

I found Gridcoin when I was grumbling about the lack of information in CureCoin's thread.  Someone in a chat room mentioned Gridcoin so I finally read through this entire thread.  Let me say first off, Rob, you are top notch.  Very responsive and you obviously work your a*s off!

So I will be joining the fray as well.  I really like what you are doing here.  I don't understand the idea behind most crypto-currencies.  There are just too many clones now with new one's popping up every week or even every day.  However, I believe Gridcoin could literally change the world and that is why I'm so excited about it.

So I've got three computers now (not the most powerful) and I will begin working to set them up but I've also got three more in route that are set up with more intense mining in mind.  So I hope to be a contributor quite soon and will join the team when I get things working.  Again I think the development team and overall support is top notch.  I just don't see what else people can ask for.

I am super excited about this project!  Well done!

how can i make my boinc utilization 100% im just getting 50%...do i need to add more projects?

You need to run gridcoin as admin. If you are already running Gridcoin as admin then you need to adjust your settings in BOINC.

In BOINC, go to View>Advanced view

Then go to Tools>computing preferences

In this menu setup to use 100% of the processors and use 100% of the processing time.

its already 100% of the processors and use 100% of the processing time but still getting only 50% what is the minimum projects to be attached to get 100% utilization?

The number of projects is irrelevant, as long as BOINC is currently working on something and is set-up to use 100% of the processors/processor time then you should get 100%. Double-check to make sure that your BOINC is installed in the default location (if not then you need to point to BOINC's data directory in your gridcoin.conf file) and make sure that you are running Gridcoin as Admin.

Also, if that does not work, then in BOINC go to View>Advanced View

From there go to Advanced and select "Read local prefs file".

Hi, Rob:

Thanks for the detailed reply.
Kudos for all the great work done by the development team.
I believe what you guys are trailblazing here will have fundamental impact on the network in the future not just Gridcoin.
For example, in the future, a central network administration (such as BOINC team) can be replaced by the gridcoin p2p network with POW/POS built-in.
BOINC becomes of an Apps store. Even such Apps store can be distributed as we can securely store certificate and links of the Apps in the p2p network which allows people to download from authenticated apps location.

It may help if your visionary plan can be translated into a marketing campaign.
It will also help if there are derivatives of Gridcoin in the pipeline as part of the roadmap. Not to dilute Gridcoin, but to expand into different area and then provide additional value of the main coin network.
Would love to help if any is needed.

John

Hi, Grid:

If I understand correctly your new SQL based p2p crypto-exchange mechanism can be used as an effective Proof-of-Stock mechanism.
This may be even superior than Datacoin where they allow storing of some amount of data in the blockchain.
Can you shed some light on the differences?

John
I'd like to roll out SQL in phases:
* Client synchronization for standard data, blocks, tx, leaderboard - existing information that we can use for transaction auditing - all info can be harvested from the existing chain
* Full p2p distributed ledger: In the future, the ability to roll out data structures that are fully replicated and synchronized among our p2p network automatically.
* PoW (or PoS) based on the dissemination of the data itself.  Useful for CPU miners and for validating the integrity of the data (rejecting any injected data not approved by the network)

We have partially finished #1- you can query blocks and credit information from boinc.
#2 and #3 requires an expanded SQL spec; replicating the schema is fine, but Im working on the mechanism that secures the synchronized "official" ledger state.

From a high level, I think if we roll out a cryptographically strong formula that locks each row to a block key and block time and rowhash, and prunes old data, it would work.
The process itself of creating the rowhash may be the key to the PoW required for SQL replication; For example, if it takes time and effort for a client to generate the rowhash for new data, that is part of the PoW required to add info to the sql tables in order to be accepted by the network.

Yes, in theory, the SQL future features may not only be able to store useful data for the coin (such as the data you referring to) but we may even be able to set up pointers to
web resources to store things like files that everyone can download - obviously to resources that have no point of failure and no central authority; etc; but Id like to focus on the SQL replication first.

Thanks,
Grid

good, SQL works much better. just a little delay when opening the leaderboard now.

Great!  That part is normal, its analyzing the 2300 rows each time you re-open it.  The lookback for the leaderboard is 30 days so it will get bigger and we'll see how long it takes in a couple of weeks.

New version available:
Release Notes:   1.1.5.1/56/7.00: Install From RPC: Yes

** The main reason for this update is the SQL server was causing a lag, and I did identify the lags root cause finally and it is fixed!

** Important: A new boinc timestamp format has been used, modified program to honor both types.  If your average credits are low this should fix the issue.

Older:
* Important: Dc7D pointed out a flaw where the credits are miscalculated in circumstances where the project is abandoned.  Fixed.
* The leaderboard has been improved to be much more accurate, show projects ascending, show the correct credits descending, and a bug fixed
where it was skipping a bunch of projects.
* The mining console will now automatically shrink on smaller monitors so you can administer properly.
* Added disablesql=true key (please don't use this unless absolutely necessary).
* The Rows column in SQL has been widened so you can see the value.
* Updated SQL Database Server, query analyzer and leaderboard to communicate with the database more efficiently (prevents the locking issue).

Thanks and best regards testing,
Rob Halford
