This year I chose to stay away from ICOs due to the bearish market since January. I even had some ICOs that I was interested in, like DCC, but I preferred to just observe.

I have never invested heavily in an ICO project, between 2 and 5 ethereum. not without reason, but because of capital constraints and my doubts about the future of tokens that I bought when the ICO.

I know that the answer depends on the project, how much you believe in it, and how much you have to spend.

But I am looking for data about an average ICO investor... are people investing tiny amount in as many projects? or more sizeable amounts?

For example, lets take a $40m ICO, what do you think the average investor puts?  $10? $100? $1000? 5,000? more?

Edit: many of the answers were, whether one should invest in an ICO at all. My question was intended to understand more specifically what's the average person place nowadays in an ICO, IF they participate. I am interested in data, about a typical average ICO investment, not whether anyone should or shouldn't invest in an ICO.

For the ICO project, I will do diversified investments. The investment in each project will not exceed 10% of the total assets, which will help to diversify the risk of investment.

You always need to invest as much as in the case of force majeure is not a pity to lose. This market is very risky, don't forget.

Well every person is different but i usually invest 0.1-2 ETHs, depend on the project itself and i usually join a pool to invest on presale. Because it's more worth and you can get a big bonus too. I joined a telegram group about the ico pool, so everytime a good project come they usually make a pledge and we can invest together.

considering that there are currently many extraordinary fraud projects, I think it's very risky to invest a lot of money in the ICO. and many investors are currently avoiding ICO because they don't want to lose because of a scam. especially when the current market conditions are bad, the coin has a lot of decline.

During participation in ICO I am trying to invest not more than some hundreds dollars in a single project. It makes me confident that I wouldnt lose too much and also it bring me profit during some period of time.

When I see a new project that I like and I want to invest in the ICo, I mostly don't invest too much, cos I try to be at least careful, so I choose to invest a reasonable amount that I know that even if things don't go well, it wouldn't really be such a big loss to me. I put in funds that I can afford to  lose, because of the too many failed ICOs that we have now.

I normally invest $100 into ICO. It is not a big amount and I can afford to loose this money. Investing into ICO is very risky because many of them fail, but some show good growth, so if your portfolio is diversified enough, you should be earning at the end.

I still don't have additional capital, bro, to invest in IO. because almost all assets that I have in the crypto world are trapped and experiencing critical conditions. therefore I chose to remain patient and hold the coin that I have ..

I do not invest much because ICO is always a risk. I started with 200-300 dollars and only when I was completely confident in the project. Hiwever, there are so many scam, that it is hard to find something worthwhie.

Most of the ICO I invested this year have not come out well. I have drawn my line to 1 eth. The maximum I can invest in ICO now is 1 Eth.

I never invest in any ICO as now most of the ICO are taking lot of time to list in the exchanges and till they get listed in any reputed exchange their price goes down. So i just wait for their listing in exchanges and if the project is worthy i invest in it. But i join their bounty program so i can earn some free coins.

For me, I invest sometimes 1-2 ethereum because I always go for the bonuses and most of the time the bonuses only goes if you bought worth more than 1 ethereum of the coin.
Since it's very risky in taking part in investing in ICOs I make sure that the investments I made will not go to waste because I always read the whitepaper.

I think it would be very risky if you invest too much in ICO because ICO does not have a guarantee that we will benefit when the coins are listed in the exchange, many investors are currently experiencing losses because when the coins are listing in the exchange price the coins are lower than the ICO price

I don't think investing on an ICO is a wise thing as of the moment. Most ICO are failing and not giving back to the Investors what is as promised to them. ICO is risky and the potential for losing money is high. I would suggest you to just spend fund to a worthy kind project. Do a lot of reading before giving in. As for me, I cannot afford to lose money on an ICO so I no longer join one but instead buy a coin that is already introduced on exchanges.

As there are many scamming and hacking ico's there, so one should be more careful choosing ico and invest in it. One should not invest a huge amount in ico at this point.

I will say for me it depends on the project, the highest i have invested in a project is 1.5ETH and lowest I have invested is 0.1ETH, my amount of investment depends on the project, if it is a project i am so bullish on then i will go above 1ETH else I will stay below 0.5ETH
