Corrupt politicians, greed businessmen and people from there and as well as other countries that takes advantage of the goodness of Nigeria. It's sad to see that there are countries that are being exploited for having not to strict in laws for their own land to be used for the industry that they are strong. It's hard to get back on track when there is no unity and everyone is on their own and divided with each of their goal trying to hit it on their own. Whilst the government is doing its own thing and people can't even feel what they do.

Nigeria is country that is well known as a typical agricultural nation which was once the mainstay to the country economy and because of the agricultural strength of the country compel them to have their flag as Green White Green which signify agriculture and peace but it baffles me to see the level of hunger going on in Nigeria now to the extend that an average Nigerian cannot boast of feeding himself and family three square meal per day.
What could be the root cause of this hunger in a country that has all it takes including human capitals and natural resources to make a great nation that the whole would will cherish and envy.
I'm also from an agricultural country, and while I don't think people are often going hungry here, the poverty rate is pretty high and rising, even though we have a very low standard of what counts as poverty. Unfortunately, it seems that Nigeria is not a state that cares about its citizens. I've seen that on many occasions here on this forum, where people from Nigeria were trying to do great Bitcoin-related things, while the government remained hostile to cryptos. But then there's also the matter of information age we live in, and that nowadays, agriculture is not the backbone of a successful economy, at least not until the country or its partners get into a serious crisis. Economies can thrive on providing services, and sometimes they can fail when providing agriculture.

I take it that this is a rhetorical question because anyone with eyes and brains know that the problem is a result of the actions and inactions of bad leaders. Nigeria has never had a good leader (President), the ok nlu one that came close was Goodluck Jonathan and he couldn't do much because everyone around him was corrupt and thwarted his efforts.

The middle class in Nigeria has no purchasing power. Minimum wage is less than $80 yet the cost of living is constantly going up. It's a wonder how the system hasn't collapsed.

This thread should be moved to the Nigerian local board.

The case of my country Nigeria is a different case; the governments are very selfish and the citizens are also greedy.

Our economic situation is not in good state because our natural resources are not useful because of the greediness and selfishness of our leaders who prefer small money over the country’s development. We have crude oil, gold, and other natural resources that every country will be willing to have, yet nothing to show for it, and we also have land that is very fertile for farming yet, hungry is still with us.

The ruling class are not making laws that will support agriculture, it simple the farmers are not having access to agricultural loans, they are not having access to fertilizer too boast agricultural production. The other thing that will make farmers to lose interest in farming is insecurity of farmers and their farms. When the farm areas are becoming so insecure to the point that farmers are being abducted, raped and killed when they venture into the forest to farm, they will be scared of going to farm and when the people are not farming there will limited food available for the entire population to consume. There has been several attack on farmers by herdsmen throughout the country and the government has done little or nothing to stop the activities of these herdsmen. Until the activities of these herdsmen are checked and brought to halt there will be continuous shortage of food supply.

No matter how fertile a country is, it needs the best discipline to run it. Perspectives and insecurity in poor toxic farming areas and over-reliance on oil reserves. Small-scale farmers and cultivators do not have easy access to markets and reasonable credit, and rapid population growth is outstripping agricultural production. Political instability and inconsistencies in policy are also major reasons for this.

Addressing these challenges requires a comprehensive approach, involving government, private sector, and civil society efforts to boost agricultural productivity, improve food systems, and ensure sustainable economic growth. Bitcoin might bring changes to such country. I mean people may fight against inflation and unemployment in a country where political things are not good in favour of wellness of every citizen. So, people should find time to educate themselves about bitcoin because bitcoin definitely will bring changes to individual's life and to the economy of country as well.

Is farming mechanised in Nigeria? Or do the majority of people still use hoes and machetes? If Nigeria can't industrialise farming, then there will be a big poverty and a waste of human resources on simple tasks that machines can easily do. Machines save tons of human resources and tons of work for people, they speed up the process and make it possible to produce lots of farming products. When there is a need of 5 men in farm instead of 100 men, then these 95 men work on different things, including science, technology, chemistry and etc... This results in rich and developed country but Nigeria has serious problems. Firstly, like I said, farming isn't industrialized and advanced, then the whole country is also corrupted and only a few people are rich, wealth equity is terrible, because of poor conditions, people are actively into scamming and harming others. Yeah, that's a serious problem and there will be hunger if this issues aren't solved.

I think the mean reason for the hunger in Nigeria is the corruption from thier different government agency, if the corruption is there the people will suffer and the corrupt politician will become rich, because the budget for the agriculture will be directed to his pocket and not on the farmers, and they will suffer a high fertilizer and pesticide price, if the farmers are lack of support from the government their productivity rate will fall and it is maybe the reason why there are huger people, there are so many reason for this but in my opinion the corruption is one of the reason for this huger in nigerian people.

Yes, even though Nigeria has sufficient land for the agricultural sector, in fact hunger still occurs in the country. and of course this can happen not without reason, recently there have been frequent changes in the climate and average temperature in the country which can affect agricultural conditions in the country so that agricultural yields decrease and some even experience crop failure. On the other hand, infrastructure and distribution development to support increasing crop yields in the agricultural sector is still lacking. So even though Nigeria has quite extensive agricultural land, this land is not utilized as well as possible, some farmers still rely on rainfall to be able to grow crops. so that when the dry season arrives, they will never be able to plant crops.
A country is poorest when it cannot produce any crops on its own. Other raw materials can usually be imported from different countries but if every item has to be imported from other countries then it is natural that the financial condition of that country will always be in crisis. Nigeria's lands are very fertile and they are quite agricultural but some human-made structures have destroyed the fertility of those lands. When other countries allow a company to operate, they think about how much the company will damage the agricultural land, river water bodies and all these natural environments and then they are allowed to operate the company but it is different in Nigeria.
Since this country is in a very bad economic condition, the big companies of the world build big companies here without any kind of recycling system by donating some amount of money, which is seriously damaging the agricultural land of this country.

its definitely have to do with the unoptimized yields, relying on rain fall means there'll be fewer harvesting there should be large investment to the agricultural sector since there is abundant of resources to be taken advantage of, but it is also at the same time not gonna be easy thing to do, the thing that holds back most of developing country is the corruption, the money that is supposed to be invested could instead vanish into thin air due to corruption if not taken care of properly.
if only the money can be taken advantage of properly i'm sure country with abundant resources and fertile land can easily overcome the hunger, just multiply current yield with all that investment and you will see that it can easily feed the whole country, since its more likely that people in developing country are still interested in agricultural sector which means huge manpower to take advantage of to plant various basic foods.

what matter most at this point is a clean governance system as well as proper management of agricultural sector in order to boost the yield thats it.
just that i'm sure hunger in the country will be gone in no time. although we all know the countries that actually making money is the one that's revolving around industrial sector with product that have added value, eventually if you can solve hunger you can get to that level as well starting industrial trend in the country.

It is very sad to hear that even though a country is major in agriculture, the people of that country suffer from lack of food. Maybe the people in their country are now giving up agriculture and focusing more on other activities, so that their country's agricultural output is not producing as much as before. Are there food shortages in all countries like ours?

Nigeria and Bangladesh may be equal in terms of prosperity and even Bangladesh may be an agricultural country like Nigeria. It is true that our country produces a lot of paddy but the people of our country suffer from food shortage because they do not have enough money to buy that food grain. Our country has sufficient food reserves, yet people in this country are not well fed because the cost of food items is too high for them. Due to inflation, the price of food products has almost doubled beyond the reach of the common man.

Nigeria as a country claim to be practicing democratic system of government but this is not true ,Democracy which I know by definition is a government for the people, but what they're practicing in Nigeria is a selfish government "government for their pockets " none of the leaders in power cares about the people which they're leading to try to solve their problems, rather the government that is elected to solving its citizens problems even got into office created more problems for the people, thereby pushing the majority of people into the poverty line with hiking fuel prices which later caused the skyrocketing prices of things in the country, whereas the wages and salaries remained constant.

greedy rich powerful people that simply do not give a fuck about common folks.

That's the main problem of the country but if you look it more, the causes stretched more than that.

Nigeria is divided by different ethics and regions of different states, there are North, North central, Southeast, Soutwest region. The only place that where farming activities takes place is the North and the North Central where agricultural farming take place and this region because of high level of poverty and low education, some group of people recruit there children into banditary to disturb people from farming. This insecurity has chase away farmers from going to the farm and this has resulted into low farm produce and because of demand, the local farmers can't meet up with the demand which has made the available ones to be expensive and the government has also closed the borders, there has not been a way for people to import goods from other countries.

Subsidy removal: On the may of 23, 2023, the new government came into power and remove subsidy from fuel, so technically everything became expensive, the farmers depend on fuel to make their farming easier from hiring tractors to make ridges, processing their harvest into final foods and cost of transport from farm to their respective house storage where their produce are store. This is why food is very expensive for ordinary people to buy.

Increase in Inflation: The harsh policy set up by the new government has made everything so expensive, you can't even differenciate the price between locally produce items to the ones they are selling outside but because borders are close, it's impossible to bring in some items. Some people are even saying that the cost of buying some items from outside the country is cheaper than buying within the country. This is the mess we are right now and the problems is from failed governments who love looting from the day independence was given to the country.

As a Nigerian, this is to best reply that summarizes the situation of my country. And to make it worse the common folks keep worshiping the greedy rich and powerful people. It is almost as if they've been held spell bound. The greedy rich and powerful people will steal the the nation's resources and impoverish the common folks,  yet they will keep cheering them on. They are like a sheep being led to the slaughter house and despite knowing their demise is near, they do not about it. The people love their chains.

Many third world countries suffer from this exact same problem. People keep electing the corrupt politicians never learning their lesson. A lot of people on the senate are useless and not really contributing anything. I think many people typically only vote for who’s popular whether be that a good or a bad thing. I hope we all can do better in voting since this is our future we are talking about.

they are the same people we elect all the time. but look at the countries that never do the election in which their leaders reign for more than 20 years, their country seem to be more progressive. election is just a waste of time that the government keeps spending every 4-6 years. big companies that suppress the newer technology that should improve our lives are the ones that also need to change like the new crops that grow faster and bear fruits faster, but these are not shared with the developing countries.

Every year in India many farmers commit suicide as they are trapped in debt and unable to pay the loan they have taken from the bank, sometimes the amount it costs them to transport the produce to the market is greater than the MSP which is decided by government in coordination with their corporate elite for their own benefit actually farmers don't get much profit as they barely try to get 2 times meals a day it's the middlemen that loots them along with government but now thanks to the start ups and idea of fa to plate wherein farmers can sell their produce directly to consumers through an online platform this has helped many of them
Similarly in Nigeria something has to create a bridge between farmers and consumers.

I never actually associated Nigeria as a country with a well developed and sophisticated agriculture background. It may have pockets that are comparable to the most advanced economies, but it still seems like most farming is done by very small to medium scale enterprises which can be vastly inefficient. You'll find places in America can farm hundreds of acres with less than 10 people thanks to the automated machinery that's in use, however that machinery is just not being used enough in Nigeria. It comes down to economics though and it is probably better not to use such machinery, because it's helping to employ many thousands of people which is probably a better return than the outlay on equipment.

One of the factors that causes famine which makes the lives of people there increasingly complicated is due to the failure of agricultural production because investment policies in the agricultural sector do not receive attention from the government. Government policies must focus more on food production, especially since Nigeria is known as an agricultural country. Increasing investment in the agricultural sector will have the potential to increase national food resources, with a focus on increasing food yields Nigeria can take the lead in ensuring national food and even supply some international needs. A more active government role in caring for the fate of the community will increase productivity in terms of food income and can reduce or eliminate hunger in the country.
If for example, government can provide farmers with necessary materials that are technological advanced like tractors, sprayers, cultivators and harvesters and also quality inputs like seeds, fertilizer and chemicals like herbicides insecticide and modernized pesticide, not only these but also make their road accessible from rural areas to urban and vise versa, i think farmers can be able to produce more than what their producing now. And even the hunger will be reduced to some extent even if not all.

But the main problem is lack of sufficient assistance from government to farmers. So I think government should do something in agricultural sector to improve the live of the citizens.

The Nigerian government is not picking up interest in agricultural production, and they are not even investing to empower those that are into it. Before you can even get a grant to fund your agricultural business in this country, you will go through a so-called process, and at the end of the day, you might also not get it approved.

The youth appear to have channelled their energy of hustle to a different side; they now go all digital, looking for greener pastures in other areas. It's only a few big and famous individuals who are into agriculture in this country that I know of; the most an average man cares about is just to farm and produce what will be enough for himself and his family, which most times they are never enough.
