Just in case no one loves you, I love you 3000.
.... Read technical discussion, read all of the most merited threads, understand the significance of Pizza day, the 2011 bubble, Cyprus, HODL, the fall of all the securities that some of us lost the equivalent of $Millions now.

Please, understand the significance of HOLD, spelled properly.

OP, Why is proper English a requirement for Merit? I have seen 1000s of posts on this forum with proper English, but it adds little to the discussion. I give merit for constructive posts that adds value to the discussions. You can write a Wall of Text, with proper English and it still adds no value.

There are plenty of posts written in English so poor it is impossible to understand the point they are trying to make. That has to be a barrier to receiving merit. Of course there are plenty of posts written in good English that also have no value but that doesn't mean that if someone posts on the English language sections then a minimum level of competence in the language is required. I wouldn't dream of using Google translate and then posting the result on a local board.

The English language requirement for some sections on this forum is acceptable, because it is a universal and popular language.  Out of the world's approximately 7.5 billion inhabitants, 1.5 billion speak English — that's 20% of the Earth's population. However, most of those people aren't native English speakers. About 360 million people speak English as their first language.

I know it isn't that relevant but those numbers a well out of date. That site uses a 12 year old book as a source. The population of US is now 325.7 million, UK 65.6 million exceeds that even before the other 65 nations that have English as the official language are added.

So if 80% of the rest of the world speak other languages, should we exclude them from our main Bitcoin discussions?

Also the use of "3rd world poster" as a derogatory labelling of non-English posters are simply wrong. Would you say, Italian and German people are "3rd world posters", because they do not use English as their first language?   Sad

I've met people on here that I didn't even realise were not native English speakers until they told me. Others I just can't understand what they are trying to say. Nobody wants to exclude anyone from the main Bitcoin discussion based on nationality but there is a minimum ability in the English language required to make a meaningful contribution.

This is an English language forum so I need to be able to understand what people are posting. EU based members do not post the horse shit google translate 100 words when 1 will do shitposts, I know plenty of Dutch and German posters that type better English than I do, Your English is probably better than mine.. This isn't a pop at you buddy, its the Asian bounty hunting groups that are causing the issue.

As for defining a quality post, that isn't what I am trying to do here. A quality post is subjective to the reader, Lauda will expect perfect technical knowledge, I prefer something with humor..

This is to help newbies stand out and get the attention of merit sources. Agree, disagree or call me a racist - as I said it is all subjective.

As I see on what you want to preach. all those members that dont have proper English is a 3rd world shit poster!
You might consider your language there, it is near to racism. it is not their fault that they (im one of those) are not born in an English land!
But still proper english is not all that are needed to get a merit, yes it is one way to communicate and to understand things here but without a good value and knowledge with it, a sentence wont have a value.

I agree to a certain extend, but if a reader has little time, then he is likely to skip a post that is hard to read, and that can lose the chance of a merit

Please, do not put that much emphasis on language and get more into the meat of the posts. If I can understand a post, I would consider it for merit only based on the ideas, sources, knowledge, etc. If the poster has a shitty English (like myself) but a great crypto knowledge I am happy to have him/her around.

It seems it's more difficult to earn merits while only posting comments (replies) as opposed to putting up actual posts that others comment on. Doesn't this just unnecessarily increase the number of posts on the forum or is that a sign of a healthy forum?

Don't forget that if you want to practice your English without being accused of polluting the boards, you can join Fit to Talk English, and you'll get some helpful comments about your posts. It's for Bitcoin Talk members only, and you will need to have made at least 5 posts in the forum.

JC is the man for doing this, people who need help with communicating in English should really reach out for help

I get merits easily, sure I know "its easy for you as you have been here ages" ETC ETC.. but for those who actually want to level up and be a part of this community then I will do my best to advise you.

Here is a link to the original thread in Meta. https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/tmans-guide-to-getting-merit-3182178

This will help only a few people here as most will just want the bounty Moniez.. but for those who can think a little bigger, and those of you who are here for the right reasons then.

I am adamant the number one cause of no merits is poor English, this is something you can change if you are struggling to get merits so if you know that this is the limitation then you need to take some steps

* Improve your English language, this isnt just spelling and grammar this includes using words like Sir & Mr when I see those I immediately assume the person is a 3rd world poster
* Spend the time that you currently use posting incoherent rubbish to learn proper Written English, start with youtube there has to be over 3002 different videos about writing the English Language also
https://www.duolingo.com/course/en/ar/Learn-English-Online was recommended by another poster
* Read a few English books, you can download free Ebooks as a starter, look how sentences are structured common words etc.
* Remember a quality post isnt necessarily a long winded post, using words that make you sound like you swallowed a thesauras doesnt help your cause

Take the above advise and stop trying to level up for 3-6 months you will become a quality poster if you use some more of your free time reading the forum, this doesn't mean bounties, altcoins, speculation all the shit subs.. and only post in a few threads every week, no need to try to max out the activity now, sure you want to keep getting towards the higher numbers but its counter productive when we see high activity and 0 merit. Read technical discussion, read all of the most merited threads, understand the significance of Pizza day, the 2011 bubble, Cyprus, HODL, the fall of all the securities that some of us lost the equivalent of $Millions now.

one other thing, you need to stop these bounties, I know it hurts you now financially, but seeing someone in a low end bounty for $20 just makes me assume they are a 3rd world poster and with a great initiative by BTCforJoe there is an option to help https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/joes-signatureless-challenge-archives-3055616 That thread is a tremendous Idea so props to OP there

a few more things
Do NOT call Sr Members Sir, Mr or any other shit like that, It is not needed.
READ THE FUCKING RULES, both forum rules and individual board rules.
Don't post in Bitcoin Discussion or Economics and wherever you are do NOT post in megathreads, I guarantee you have nothing new to say.
Humor is good, lots of people get merit for silly one liners if they are funny.

Good luck all you newbies, I hope this helps a few of you. Please do not PM me begging for merits, I will ask DT members to tag you if you do.

EDIT: use the search button, so many redundant threads
