If you would have been active until now I guess you are not a newbie anymore as you have experienced the worst days of the market as this post is in January or you have just become pesimitic and left everything. Whatever I would suggest wan for the long term period as it has a very low price right now.
If you know about neo coin you can go with this now neo at very low price so you can so with that it's has very much potential.
I'm about 75% BTC and the rest a mix of alts, with my larger alt holdings being XMR, ETH, ZRX and BAT.
I'm not sure if BAT will still be around in a few years, but XMR and ETH most definitely will. XMR for obvious reasons and ETH simply because the majority of top 100 coins are built on it/use it in some way. ZRX because Coinbase's DEX is being built on the 0x protocol.

I think that if you choose the most known like Ethereum, Litecoin, NEO, Ada Cardano, EOS, Stellar Lumens, Ripple, you have good chance to make good gain if you hold them for long term
I think you should invest in Ethereum, Ripple, EOS, ADA, OMG and NEO. These are the altcoins in which I also invested and I think that in the long term they will bring you a good profit.
I strongly suggest for investment on the ethereum only. The price for ethereum is small and will soon rise.
I suggest to invest in NEO, EOS, ONT, TRX. But i think If you want to hold an altcoin for a long term, make your own research and look for a coin with an active development team, active and good marketing strategy, a coin with a good potential, or a coin where you can gain a passive income. Then you can decide about the future of the altercoin
You do not need any recommendation in this forum. what you need to do is to learn how to make your research very well and decide on which altcoin to hold. However, you need to hold solid coins in your portfolio. Hold bitcoin, etherum, neo and maybe waves for he long term.
I think that many altcoins are investment projects. It's no surprise that the implementation of these projects takes time. We must wait for the projects to realize at least some of the project's functions.
I think if you want to hold some coins and tokens for long time EOS , ethereum, hydro , waves , litecoin, hbz and ethereum classic is good for you

If you are looking for a good altcoin for long term, I think ETH, Stellar and XRP are suitable for you. Also this coins is rising its value so there's possibility you can get high value after a long time of holding. Pretty much the alts inside the top five are a very good long term holding. 
At present, the risk of investing in ICO in this market is very large, so I think this is not a good choice. You can study more cryptocurrencies in the market. They have advanced technology. I believe they will have great future. Rising space.
in my view altcoins which can be appropriate for long-term conserving are the pinnacle 5 in coinmarketcap, due to the fact they already have a large network and will keep growing along with the development of crypto

Right now, altcoins aren't that good as long term investments, I mean, they could be, if you find one at a really low price, which there are, but there is no guarantee that you could get profits from it after several months have passed
I think Ethereum is the right choice if you want to save all your money because in my opinion, this coin is the best coin and is predicted to have a good future. You should be careful about choosing the coins you want to keep, some projects is not that good :/
There are many coins to hold for long term , Go and search at coinmarketcap . If you have huge budget i will recommend you to buy btc and eth first..

I would say no one will take any decision because many people will give a lot of views. Some people may be very experienced but you may not feel better in their opinion, and some might think that trading is new but their opinion looks good on you, based on their uninterrupted opinion, you bought tokens. That could bring something bad for you. First Try keep learn and then please Buy some Alts.
If one altcoin keep, I think to take Ethereum and wait when it still shoots , I think it may happen in the next year
