Yes, it is a good idea if that altcoin has good potential. For a long-term hold, you must choose a very good altcoin. I believe that it can be a good idea in investing in altcoins for the long term but in the end it all boils down to the altcoin which you are planning on investing in. There are some altcoins which you should only use for day trading and never invest in for the long term while there are coins like ethereum and monero which is always a good idea to invest into for the long term.

Not really, only investing on bitcoin long term makes sense. There is not a single good altcoin out there in terms of long term holding. Im sure some people will get rich holding some altcoin, but what one? it's a lottery.
I guess Monero, Litecoin and Ethereum based on hype, could deliver good gains, but I wouldn't count on it at all.
