Your friend really tried for you by introducing you to the forum here, but maybe your friend doesn’t understand much about the forum also, just guessing, because someone who really understands the forum won’t say merit is needed to secure an account, merit is just like a reward given to someone just to appreciate the person’s hard work. So that’s not linked to the security of an account. If you want to rank up your account, you really need merit to do that. Maybe you will like to participate in signature campaigns later in the future, then you need merit for that. Apart from that, I don’t really think merit is useful in any other way.
 
It’s better you visit the forum rules and regulations and check them out, I'm sure they will be of great help to you, and you can also recommend your friend to do the same thing, it’s going to help both of you when using the forum.
 
When securing your account on the forum here. Make sure you are using a strong password, Make sure your email which you used Registering your forum account is different from what you use for other activities, make sure your email is hidden (you can do that in your settings), you can sign a message in case you lose your account to hackers, you will easily be able to recover it, and you can also add OTP to your account.

You must earn merit to change your account rank. You can never change your account rank without earning merit. Your friend introduced you to the Bitcoin forum and what he told you is definitely true. Now you must informative posts to earn merit. Also if you can post informative topic informative post and good replay of post then you can earn merit from here. Merit is not needed to secure your account. What you need to secure your account is to have a good password, and follow all the rules and regulations of this forum.
But to rank up on this forum you need merit.

By making good contributions, helping people who have issues, also providing solutions to some problems the forum is experiencing, and more.

Don't forget that you are not here to eran merits but to learn and be more knowledgeable about bitcoin and all the stuffs in the crypto market. But if you aim to increase your position level, then might as well consider earning merits because so you will be able to join signature campaigns in the future. While getting merits is actually hard for beginners, but it will become easier once you completely understand the market and make high quality posts that would make other members to appreciate and put some merits into your post.

Welcome to the forum first of all. Now concerning the question you asked, you don't necessarily need merits to remain here because you can have a good discussion and interaction with other members with or without merits but your responses must be online with the subject of discussion otherwise your points will be regarded as off topic. On the other hand you need merit to move  to the next rank and moving to the the next ranks shows how improved you have become but above the rank and merit you need knowledge to progress to the next rank because getting more knowledge will surely bring merits to you so I suggest you hustle to improve your knowledge because it will give you other things which you need.

you are welcome to the forum, having merits doesn't  make you secured your account rather it navigates you from a lower rank to higher one  and without merit you cannot be included in any signature campaign, making it very necessary but not compulsory.

Your friend who introduced you to this forum did well but may be have little knowledge on how the forum operates. As others have said merit does nothing in the help of securing your account, what does is the ability of you to read and understand the rules guiding the forum.

Merits are good, but desperate want of merit leads to spamming, plagiarizing other people's content which will do more harm to the security of your account, maybe a permanent ban.
So... It is advised to keeping creating original contents which will benefit the forum and you will be awarded merits.

Newbies can get two different results simultaneously as long as they are able to achieve the targeted achievements when joining the forum. Knowledge about Bitcoin and other Altcoins is one of the main goals of joining here, but rank up is also very important in the journey process while in this open space.

The knowledge and information you gain here can help you find out more about crypto, you can also share important information here based on your knowledge and experience while in the crypto space. The quality of your post will be assessed by other members, if your post contains important information that can help other members, seniors will appreciate your efforts with merit because your post is considered quality.

I remember my friends when they were first introduced to this community by our seniors, they got banned one after another because back then they could not speak English well and they were misunderstood by the moderators as well. with that, they often post on different boards but the main problem with them is they don't read the rules and regulations. They just quickly post replies even though they don't have any knowledge about the topic. So it's better to read more at this rate rather than post anything because, with that, you can learn more until you have enough knowledge to share with us or in your local section.

It's not easy to make quality posts that actually produce merit. in about how the post or comment can have a good impact and provide a solution to the problem being discussed. Posts that are just spam will not have any value and in fact they will give distrust to the account used.

I would say it's necessary but it's never compulsory. It's necessary because you will never become a reliable forum member if you don't get out from your comfort zone, I mean by unlocking your own potentials, you will become a reputable member in the forum. However, it's still your own choice and preference if you will not try earning merits because your purpose is not to join the discussion but will only learn from the discussion in the forum.

Merits is easily earned when you are deserving. But not posting in the forum with quality posts is clearly a non merit earner.

Why did your friend didn't tell you that one? Seriously, you're a newbie here, so I will just say don't look at merits as it's your lifeline here where if you don't merit, you will not survive. Being a newbie-ranked member here or a Legendary-ranked member doesn't even matter if you're here for knowledge because both can access all of it with no restrictions (I guess).

If you want to secure your account here, you don't need merits, but you need knowledge. Knowledge to secure your account. Yes that's right. In my opinion, the mindset that must be changed first, don't think about Merit first, but think first about how to gain as much knowledge as possible in this forum so that with the amount of knowledge gained, we will develop ourselves in this forum so we can make constructive posts.

Because believe me, without extensive knowledge, we will not be able to make posts that are constructive and useful for other people. Maybe if we change our mindset first we will be able to survive in this forum and of course the reward will also come by itself. I've experienced a mindset like OP's since I first registered on this forum, but thankfully I quickly realized it and changed my mindset about this forum.

You can survive here without merit. Just keep reading, respond, and ask any questions you need to. This is the best spot for discussions, finding out the crypto industry, and having dialogues with experienced people. The merit will just come naturally without asking and applying from the merit source.

If you are here determined to join activities to earn money, you have to contribute to get merits. I am not very interested in newcomers creating many topics and sharing guides, ideas, and information that were only taken from the internet and not from their minds and self-experiences. Anyhow, newcomers are still learning and without rich experiences in this industry. So it this the common scheme. And then send messages and applications to all merit sources.

What's your purpose here? To grow, poly and get accepted into a signature campaign? If yes, then getting merits is very important. If that is not the case, if you just want to interact with other bitcoiners without any ulterior motives other than learning, knowledge, the you do not need to bother bout merits.

As much as I know this forum, having merit haven’t been a prerequisite of the rules except, when it comes to signature campaigns if you know what that is but, as per account security, merits are far from it any way to secure your account. You secure your account here by ensuring you function within the rules. Anything more than that is you seeking means to an exit.

Merit is some later introduction into the forum as a way to prevent spamming and it in turns distinguishes some accounts to be active/better posters than others.  Hence, your good even without merit so long as you have an agenda that keeps you off forum politics and some other intricacies of the forum.

For that he already been misinformed by his friend that's why its really important that newbies should ask question since they can clearly get some accurate question base on the opinion of people. And they need to know that merit is not everything and people only want this is because for ranking up reason or to join those signature campaigns which other think about. Also they need to know that this forum is not all about that since there are more larger picture that need to see here which we can benefit from. If this newbies will spend some time to research then provably they can see more better opportunities rather than expecting something larger than what they thought's especially on targeting to join signature campaigns in this forum.

Your friend is wrong. Merit has nothing to do with account security. As a newbie you shouldn't focus on merit.
Be natural, read forum and participate in discussions. Merit will come eventually. Don't fish for merit, we can understand the intention.

No, merit is not compulsory or necessary for securing your account here in the forum; you can see so many active accounts with less or no merits, and they are still interacting with other forum members, and they are getting all the information they need in the forum, and merit is not stopping them from getting all they want in this forum.But depending on your main aim for joining the forum, if you have the aim of joining the forum just to participate in signature campaigns, then merit is necessary because you need merit to rank up to another rank in this forum.

You can get merits if you post quality contents that have good information, and if people get something beneficial from it, everyone can award or give you merits if they find your post worthy of getting merits. In fact, merit is a reward for your quality contribution to the forum.
