Op this forum isn't a do or die affair, the primary purpose of this forum is to learn, teach, ask ... About Bitcoin and other crypto assets so the idea of merit for survival is wrong. However your survival here only depends on your ability to obey the forum rules, aside that there is nothing required of you to do that will keep your account in a good condition here in this forum. The merits you talk about are just rewards to express how useful your contribution is, so if you want some then make good contributions.

As for the security of your account, it is not necessary to have merit; just follow the rules and regulations of the forum to avoid account bans. But for other reasons, someone really needs merits. For example,  if someone wants to keep their account growing and get a good reputation in the forum, getting is really necessary, but someone also needs to be knowledgeable about cryptocurrency, especially Bitcoin aspects, so they can contribute valuable things to the forum before merits. Once someone is posting quality posts, they will be rewarding the posts with some numbers merits.

Another reason why many people are after merits again is to rank up and participate in signature campaigns, like doing some task for company's , and when some don't reach a certain rank, they can't participate in many signature campaigns that why people are getting merits to rank up their accounts. But as for person that just want to learn about Bitcoin and cryptocurrency in general, merits are not important; just focus, learn, and ask questions about what you don't know. Just know that merits are just given to someone as a reward for effort by doing good things in the forum.

Want to survive on what exactly?

The forum isn't a battle field thats requires your fighting skills to survive  although I understand the point you are definitely driving at but a simple sentence will put you in the right way as coming here or being lure here for merit hunt will just get you stranded.

This here is a crypto community(Bitcoin) and there are lots of knowledge that is packed up here and also benefits you enjoy here as privilege once you have started developing yourself in your learning abilities and also involving and participating in discussion for the betterment and exposure of more people who are willing to adopt the benefits of knowing and having Bitcoin.

welcom @Eldestyoung here , Your friend misguided you, Merit is just need for ranking up youe account but you can survive here without getting single merit. There are some users (in bounty section) who has more than thousand posts with zero merit.

Bitcointalk is best place of learning, getting accurate information about crypto, taking advice, providing services. If your engage in discussion, providing helpful information,your post worth to get merit then you will also get merit where your account will be gradually ranking up. So try to learn here instead of just thinking about merit.

No merit is actually not necessary. This is just only one of requirement when you want to rank up and target to join on signature campaigns. But if you are not interested with that and you are here for information then provably merit is not really necessary for that case. You also need to know that this forum is not all about signature campaigns since there are more larger than that if you just do a research especially on altcoin section.

But since you are asking to earn merit then try to find something useful here and once people appreciate your effort done then for sure that they give you that as token of appreciation of your contribution. Also don't forget to share your merit earned since those people receive your merit will provably remember your generosity and might give back what you give to them.

Merits are important to everyone in here from the day this feature was applied.

By the way, if your friend introduced you to the forum as you claimed and also told you you need merits to secure your account, why can't you ask the friend how? That would have been easier. That's by the way, the merit is never needed to secure your account, that is a misconception, no account expires here unless you are banned. And you can be banned only if you are disobeying the rules of the forum. However, you need merits to grow in the forum, we have different ranks and as you are a newbie, you might need merits to rank up to another stage, and it goes on like that. All these are not necessary if you are just learning from here and imparting knowledge alone.

It all depends on what brought you to the forum, if you’re here solely to engage in discussion about bitcoin and crypto then you actually don’t need merits but if you’re here to rank up so that you can be a part of a signature campaign then you’d need to earn yourself some merits. But there’s more advantages in the former, because if you engage in discussions here there’s a high chance that you’ll earn merits even when you’re not looking for it… but if you’re just fixated on the merit part you might be discouraged if you’re unable to earn then in the first few weeks of your registration here.


You get them when people send it to you, take note that there is no shortcut to earning merits — just look for some materials to help you learn about bitcoin after you have gotten the basics you can come back to the forum and contribute to discussions and also ask questions that should be enough to help you earn merits.

You can’t be blamed for not having a good orientation before joining the forum, your friend probably told you about joining campaigns to earn and to do that he told you need merits.

This is a forum where we discuss mainly about bitcoin and share knowledge amongst ourselves. This is a forum where you gain knowledge about bitcoin and blockchain technology and if your motive is to earn merits and participate in paid campaigns then it will be difficult for you without having any knowledge. Merits is one of the requirements to grow in rank but the major requirement is your contribution to the forum, to earn merits you have to be useful to the community one way or the other and merits have nothing to do with securing your account…

General answer: You're not necessary to post, earn merit, become a good guy, create a fake story, etc. You can become a silent reader and that's fine.
