I would object to the use of obsolete cold-war terminology such as "the West;" no such entity exists any more, and the Iron Curtain and the great ideological divide of  1917-1989 are long gone.

I had believed in the past that the cold war was long gone. But now it seems clear that it is very much alive. The USSR was replaced by the Russian Federation and nothing else changes.

I don't see anyone who matters taking the idea of direct military action against Russia seriously; it has been made pretty clear that that is not on the table, though some awkward times could certainly lie ahead. I would object to the use of obsolete cold-war terminology such as "the West;" no such entity exists any more, and the Iron Curtain and the great ideological divide of  1917-1989 are long gone. The present situation involves Russia, the EU, and the US; at least call the players by their proper names.

OK... things seems to have calmed down in Ukraine, after Putin reiterated his support for the May 25 elections. Now unless the CIA-backed extremists of Right Sector does something stupid, everything should be OK.

I honestly don't see the American people supporting this type of action and there will be major political blow back if you ask me.
I also don't see America doing the first step to a future WW3.The leading governments, the UN Council, and back-benching political and editorial institutions (including the media), would of course know that a single nuclear bomb or any large-scale military or aerial strike would lead the world very quickly into certain and complete annihilation.

yeah I concur with this, in fact who knows what new technology can be used in WW3 that probably could be far more worse then a nuke, im sure there are new weapons out that both parties were saving

Obama can't even impose sanctions on Gazprom. And you people think that he is going to invade Moscow?

Sanctioning Goliath: Why Russia's Gazprom Remains Out of Reach

But there's far more at play than energy. Even if Europe finds a way to get all its gas from the U.S. and other countries – such as Algeria, Nigeria and Mozambique – energy independence is far from a panacea. Gazprom's name may combine the Russian words for "gas industry," but its reach encompasses much more than gas and oil, spanning from a subsidiary it wholly owns in Amsterdam; to investment firms in Ireland, Austria and Vienna; to energy companies in Italy and Moldova; to media companies in Moscow.

If I were the Russian Ministry of Defence, I would rather keep silence... That would work just fine, why bother to say anything? Grin

Because in Russian mindset "silence is the sign of agreement/consent", so the Ministry had to make a statement.

Ignorance should suffice (and would do much better even in the eyes of Russians). A barking dog never bites... Cool

I don't see anyone invading Russia at the moment. One thing is to make sure that Putin doesn't conquer Ukraine, the other one is to know that most of Russian citizens are against any kind of intervention in Ukraine.

NATO eyes 'defensive' permanent troop deployment near Russia's borders

"We need to look at our responsiveness, our readiness and then our positioning of forces to be able to address this new paradigm that we have seen demonstrated in Crimea and now on the eastern border of Ukraine," he said.

What "Eastern borders of Ukraine"?

Quote
"We are taking measures that should be very easily discerned as being defensive in nature. This is about assuring our allies, not provoking Russia, and we are communicating that at every level," said Breedlove, who earlier on Monday said he didn’t think Russia would invade Ukraine.

Yeah, right...

Quote
Russia voiced objections to NATO's build-up of troops in Eastern Europe amid the Ukrainian conflict. Officials say that a permanent deployment would only prove Moscow's assessment of NATO's action as hostile.

“I believe this decision would be taken and it would pose a real threat to our security. It would be a big, serious international scandal, but I know they would do it,” said Frants Klintsevich, deputy chair of the Russian State Duma’s Defense Committee. “Americans are taking all bets off, and Ukraine is just a pretext. They don't care about people, about what happens in Ukraine.”

“Those statements mean that masks are now completely off. It was clear even before that the deployment of the anti-ballistic missile system in Eastern Europe indicated the continuation of the alliance expansion eastwards,” agreed Russian Senator Dmitry Sablin, who is a member of the Federation Council’s Defense and Security Committee.

And here is the response from Putin:

RUSSIAN STRATEGIC BOMBERS FLYING ALONG CALIFORNIA COAST

The Associated Press reported Monday that Gen. Herbert Carlisle, Commander of United States Air Forces in the Pacific, acknowledged a significant increase in the activities by Russian long-range strategic aircraft flying along the California coast.

And the response from Russia:
http://www.vesti.ru/doc.html?id=1552908&cid=9

Russian Ministry of Defence advised US to learn geography  Cheesy
"First, US actually has a common border with Russia by the Bering strait, so it's absurd to treat Russian planes' flight over neutral waters in the Pacific as some kind of challenge to the US. Moreso since the intensity of US flights by the Russian borders never decreased since the de-escalation of Cold War."

"Second, connecting Russian flights in the Pacific with the events in Ukraine can only stem from poor knowledge of geography..."

"Third, stop shoving the blame. US  entangled itself in the Ukrainian crisis, and it's useless to seek scapegoats on the side now."

Nope. No economic reasons. Plus Bush is not the President, and he was more war prone.

Well, NATO invaded Yugoslavia without Yugoslavia attacking or even threatening any NATO member first...

The bombing of Serbia had more to do with the Clinton - Monica Lewinsky scandal than it had to do with any political reasons. Clinton was just looking to divert the attention from his sex scandal.
