Karpeles is not gonna end up in jail, ever. Bitcoin business is too new and too many laws which are present in normal companies are being neglected.
In addition there are too many inaccuracies with new technology and security of customers and assets. Fraudsters are really hard to put in jail in general, as an example you can check time spent in jail by Jordan Belfort. So if you think Karpeles gonna be prosecuted and put in jail, well don't count on it.

Justice.  It seems that the authorities are not really going after criminals in the crypto world that much.  I wonder if it is because they have no idea what all this stuff is?

True. When I was new to Bitcoin in 2013, I found it suspicious, that BTC price was higher on MtGox than on other sites. I registered, but I never deposited for that reason.

same but i did deposit one btc to sell if afterward in 2013, was my first btc and mtxgox was really huge back then and the most known

but i sold fairly quickly, because i smelled something shady on that exchange

At last.  I hope that he will rot in prison. (And I didn't even lose anything at gox)

So the story is he might be arrested soon, but hasn't been arrested yet?

Why would the Japanese police announce he's going to be arrested before arresting him? That would give him the opportunity to flee the country and head for Outer Mongolia, or somewhere else out of their reach.

He must have the money to charter a private plane or helicopter to fly him out unnoticed from some obscure airport.

Regarding the many, many coins stolen/compromised what is he (if he allegedly has access to them) going to do with them? He can't ever spend or move them can he? If he does that's all the evidence they need right there to lock him up & throw away the key? It's like having a gold mine under your house but you can't get access to it.

Firstly the addresses holding the stolen coins are at this point still unknown. Secondly, those coins if in his posession will have already been mixed. Thirdly, there is no proof that those coins existed at the time of the hack. It is inferred in the article that they were removed from mtGox a long time ago. Most likely by the 2011 hacker and less likeley embezled by Mark himself.

Are Bitcoin addresses holding stolen Bitcoins known?

He may hide some coins and he should be punished. Lots of people lost bitcoin because of him.

If you read this, you would think Mark would rather want to be charged in the USA --> http://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-20810572  Grin

I quote : " But while the Japanese police and prosecutors are not widely accused of resorting to more aggressive forms of interrogation such as torture, no-one outside the small interview room really knows what happens inside because suspects' interviews take place behind closed doors - without an attorney. "

They have a conviction rate of over 99%, most of which are secured on the back of a confession. What this means is.... They beat the living shit out of you until you confess... Do you think Mark will confess?

Good luck Mark, hope you prepared to whats coming your way.  Roll Eyes

I would like to see that guy behind the bars for at least 20 years. Nothing else he deserves. But I hardly believe any japanese court will do me that favour. Everytime I see that crook I start to boil because of the damage he had caused. Angry

Move On !!!!!!
He deserves to pay for all that he has done. By the Japanese, or the European or the US, it don't matter but the bastard needs to pay for all the damage he has done to the Bitcoin world and the bitcoin users.
Point blank!

I never deposited because I couldn't control the private keys. I've never kept anything more than satoshis on exchanges for that reason. So when it went down it didn't bother me.
However I remember some people who had their life savings on Gox and had to go back to work when they lost everything.

Hehh white Collar crime is only a few years in prison and its quite possible the BTC are (allegedly) stashed somewhere safe.

It can quite possibly be impossible for authorities to reclaim them.

I hope the culprit get what he deserve but people seem to be getting away with BTC crimes pretty easily...
