For parents, yes but for wife, that will backfire. Your spouse should know the key things you do for the sake of peace. There are some things you will hide from your wife which if she later find out might bring a lot of friction to the marriage. You cannot afford to be in a union with a wife that feels you are not honest. If not for anything, your wife should know all your major secrets.

Gambling is not a bad thing that will require you keeping it a top secret from your wife. There is hardly any gambler that remain completely anonymous because if you don't tell your family, your friends will know so what is the big deal telling your wife?

I'm not undermining the place of privacy, you can keep things private from the generate public or extended family member but not from wife.

I think it all depends on how much a person puts into gambling. If it's fun once a year with friends or even by yourself, that's one thing - I don't think that society has a bad attitude towards such people. But if a person starts to become addicted, gets nervous if he doesn't play, or falls into a gigantic excitement when winning or losing, then there is nothing good here and the person starts to hide it. Because who wants to let everyone know that he has problems?

based on what you've said, I want to share that I have this kind of mindset that It's better not to let people around you, especially your relative knows that you're into casino or you're participated in any act of gambling because they have the potential to oppose you which leads you to lose your game and to destroy your plans. It's okay to avoid and to keep it from them, especially if you're not asking money on them.
