Ok this might be a dumb question, but how do we get the plastic cases open?

Box cutter or exacto. Use it on the side at the crease. Insert it and wiggle a little and then take a fingernail or something similar in thickness and run it around the capsule. Then pull apart.

I've found even swiss army blades are thin enough

No power in the 'verse can stop me.
Hi,

based on current LTC, BTC and Silver prices, I made some calculations to compare Casascius' and  Smoothie's offers, and I found that they are quite similar in terms of the premium (contrary to what some other users here seem to suggest):

That was very a nicely put together analysis, but you only compare one crazy overpriced offering to another crazy overpriced offering.  I guess that sort of makes sense in an apples to apples kind of way, but you go on to defeat the point in showing that on ebay these are selling for less than the original cost!  Given that there is a limited supply one would expect them to go higher on ebay, not lower.  I just don't think they actually have the collector value that others want to place on them.

Considering that for the cost of a single oz litecoin silver piece + shipping I can get 7 traditional one oz silver coins shipped, makes me think they are far too pricey.  And that is right now, after the price rise in silver!  So, 1oz or 7oz?  Not a hard choice for me.  I do understand that a little more goes into these than stamping a traditional coin, but come on... 1 to 7??  I could understand a higher premium than regular coins, that's a given, but the current price is just an exorbitant amount of premium to be charging IMHO.

Holy crap these are expensive. I can understand a little bit of a premium, and I understand these will have a collectible element to them, but they're a bit too spendy to get my interest. Let me know when the price comes down.

Hi,

based on current LTC, BTC and Silver prices, I made some calculations to compare Casascius' and  Smoothie's offers, and I found that they are quite similar in terms of the premium (contrary to what some other users here seem to suggest):

Comparing premiums of LEALANA Litecoins vs. CASASCIUS Bitcoins:
(based on current rates: 1 LTC = 2.74 USD, 1 BTC = 132 USD, 1 oz silver = 23.50 USD)

LEALANA Litecoins from Noah (smoothie):

1) Single 1/2 Troy oz 10 LTC with error = 43.00 LTC = 117.82 USD:
--> LTC value    = 10.00 LTC = 27.40 USD
    Silver value =  4.29 LTC = 11.75 USD (= 23.50/2 USD)
    Premium      = 28.71 LTC = 78.76 USD = 66.8% of purchasing price

2) Single 1 Troy oz 25 LTC = 63.00 LTC = 172.62 USD:
--> LTC value    = 25.00 LTC = 68.50 USD
    Silver value =  8.58 LTC = 23.50 USD
    Premium      = 29.42 LTC = 80.62 USD = 46.7% of purchasing price

3) Bulk 20 pcs 1/2 Troy oz 10 LTC with error = 774 LTC = 2120.76 USD, i.e. each 38.70 LTC = 106.04 USD:
--> LTC value    = 10.00 LTC = 27.40 USD
    Silver value =  4.29 LTC = 11.75 USD (= 23.50/2 USD)
    Premium      = 24.41 LTC = 66.88 USD = 63.1% of purchasing price

4) Bulk 20 pcs 1 Troy oz 25 LTC = 1134 LTC = 3107.16 USD, i.e. each 56.70 LTC = 155.36 USD:
--> LTC value    = 25.00 LTC = 68.50 USD
    Silver value =  8.58 LTC = 23.50 USD
    Premium      = 23.12 LTC = 63.36 USD = 40.8% of purchasing price

5) Shipping USA:      12 LTC = 32.88 USD
   Shipping internl.: 28 LTC = 76.72 USD

CASASCIUS Bitcoins from Mike (casascius):

1) Single 0.5 BTC silver, 1/2 oz: 1.90 BTC = 250.80 USD
--> BTC value    =  0.50 BTC =  66.00 USD
    Silver value =  0.09 BTC =  11.75 USD
    Premium      =  1.31 BTC = 172.92 USD = 68.9% of purchasing price

2) Single 1 BTC silver, 1 oz: 2.50 BTC = 330.00 USD
--> BTC value    =  1.00 BTC = 132.00 USD
    Silver value =  0.18 BTC =  23.50 USD
    Premium      =  1.32 BTC = 174.24 USD = 52.8% of purchasing price

3) Bulk 12 pcs 0.5 BTC silver, 1/2 oz: 15.60 BTC = 2059.20 USD. i.e. each 1.30 BTC = 171.60 USD
--> BTC value    =  0.50 BTC =  66.00 USD
    Silver value =  0.09 BTC =  11.75 USD
    Premium      =  0.71 BTC =  93.85 USD = 54.6% of purchasing price

4) Bulk 20 pcs 1 BTC silver, 1 oz: 38 BTC = 5016.00 USD, i.e. each 1.90 BTC = 250.80 USD
--> BTC value    =  1.00 BTC = 132.00 USD
    Silver value =  0.18 BTC =  23.50 USD
    Premium      =  0.72 BTC =  95.30 USD = 37.9% of purchasing price

5) Shipping USA:      0.40 BTC = 52.80 USD
   Shipping internl.: 0.65 BTC = 85.80 USD

Conclusions:
  • Smootie's Litecoins are currently slightly "cheaper" (lower premium percentage) when buying small volumes. Also shipping is slightly cheaper with Smoothie.
  • For greater order volumes, Casascius' offer has lower fees.
  • All this holds when paying Smootie in LTC. Smoothie's BTC prices are significantly higher (due to recent BTC price surge, while LTC/USD remained stable)
  • Overall, the offers from Smoothie and Casascius appear to be quite comparable in terms of fees.

PS: Note that an ebay auction in Germany has just ended for a 1 oz 1 BTC silver Casascius coin for 175.12 EUR = 231,42 USD, which is 20 USD less than even bulk purchase with Casascius (not even to talk about shipping fees). So it seems the coin collectors take a [summer vacation?] break at the moment...

Update:

1. In the next week or two I will be posting a public list of all funded coins that have been purchased.
Like "https://casascius.com/fulllist.txt", I suppose - very good - I just wanted to ask for it.

Note: Casascius' list also includes future addresses.

I placed a reasonable size order with Smoothie a few weeks back.

The second package arrived this morning, I just picked it up.

Thanks again Smoothie for your prompt service when I had questions, and for the beautiful coins!

The more I stare at photos of these coins, the more I want one. But not sure if I can justify paying Ł91 for one coin. Anybody like molecular or someone else in Europe doing regional resale with lower shipping rates?
I have a couple of the 10 LTC coins in the UK - I've sent you a PM  Smiley

Update:

1. In the next week or two I will be posting a public list of all funded coins that have been purchased.

2. In the same timeframe (likely after I catch up on the last set of orders) I will be making the promised LTC donation to the Litecoin Development team's public LTC address. This donation is based upon how many first batch coins were sold. (SEE OP for more info).

will the 1/4 oz coins be arriving around then as well?

Yes, I'm hoping to have them in-hand and ready about that time. I will update here once I am selling them along with the corrected 1/2 oz batch #2 coins.
