Yes, the market can be manipulated. Simply buying or selling bitcoin in large amounts strongly affects the overall behavior of the market

This cannot yet be concluded, except it is confirmed from a reliable source. Although, the market might seem to have been manipulated, but time will tell. My understanding of the crypto market is that most times price manipulations is as a result of human factor, most especially the whales, but this might also to to either bullish market or bare market.

At an individual level, likely impossible without a lot of capital.

At a company level, pretty darn easy. There is a lot of speculation that Coinbase just did it intentionally this past week. As soon as Coinbase launched support for Bitcoin Cash, the price of Bitcoin plummeted and the price of Bitcoin cash spiked dramatically as people moved money around. Some people have suggested that there was some insider trading going on at Coinbase when this happened, and that a lot of their employees profited dramatically from it.

At the end of the day that’s all just conjecture right now as far as I know, but it’s still a lesson to be careful when investing into crypto.

A currency with a lower total market capitalization is easier to manipulate for potential whales.
Holders with large amounts of coins began to sell at a lower price than the market price, which in turn led people to start panic selling. When the price of the coin drops to a new low, the whale will buy back. Then repeat this process to accumulate more wealth, more coins, and more control.

Of course, prices are manipulated to achieve their goals, and the masses of people because of this are in the red!

Latest article by www.wired.co.uk stated that a newspaper by researchers  at the University of Texas at Austin's department of finance indicates that someone at Bitfinex cryptocurrency exchange may have artificially inflated the price of coins including bitcoin, ether, and Zcash. The responsible for this appears to have been Tether, a cryptocurrency with the same CEO as Bitfinex.
What are your thoughts about this? Do you think they really manipulated the price? Is it possible?

I think this is the case at the present market. The price are being manipulated by the large sectors which hold large percentage amount of a certain coin especially bitcoin. The number of bitcoin only limited and only a number of individuals can buy large amount it. If this individuals will cooperate then the market will most probably suffer.

Of course yes! Any market that is manipulated when there are big players on it, and the crypto currency market is only a proof of that, one should only hope for their own cleansing that they would earn money on it

You can hardly have a perfect market condition most of the times. Manipulations go on in virtually every market where there are buyers and sellers. It is however more pronounced in the crypto market because it is unregulated. Should the much touted regulations ever come into play, the manipulations should be very minimal.

Markets all over the world have some form of manipulation going on. However, the cryptocurrency market because of it's unregulated nature tends to have more manipulation especially by the so called whales who tend to crash prices so as to get some coins at cheaper prices and this is peculiar to BTC mostly

Why be surprised? Manipulations from tether and Bitfinex were and are always. When we buy cryptocurrency, we should understand it.

Unregulated markets like that of crypto currencies are ideal for manipulation. However I believe to manipulate the price of any coin you need to have a significant amount of that coin, so exchanges can be ideal culprits in any price manipulation.

How can you work in this market and be so naive? The fact that Bitfinex is manipulating the market has been known for a long time. And I think that it is not difficult for them to do this because the market is illiquid. It's enough to spend relatively little money to direct the price where they need it.

Could be, last year and early this no regulation did not have the whole world did not see the crypto market, the big players did what they wanted on the market and a lot of money on these manipulations inflated the price and sold us the bitcoin.

Of course, the crypto currency market is manipulated. Manipulators can be divided into groups:
1. Large investors Large investors may be, for example, large corporations, who suddenly decided to enter the crypto-currency market.  This category is able to manipulate all, including the whales below.
2. Currency exchanges play mostly "quietly", but, nevertheless, it is often impossible not to notice how they "push" the crypto-currencies in one direction or another.  These players are always winning and, as a rule, absolutely unpunished.
3. Large traders can appear as trustees of many people and play on speculations in a short time.  Such players are able at the right time to create waves that knock off the usual traders.
4. Large HODL'ers and miners. And finally, the least dangerous of the manipulators are players.  They maintain stability and growth of the crypto currency and only occasionally are able to shake the market when the patience of HODL'it runs out.

The market is obviously being manipulated by a huge team and I think it is still going on. It would be cool to know about further movements in the cryptocurrency
Yeah, and as long as it is not regulated, the chance of it being easily manipulated is there. It is normal to get to see things like this once in a while in a very new market that is not just unregulated but decentralized. Over time, when regulation starts kicking in, I am sure things would change gradually and all these form of manipulation we are seeing now will definitely reduce but at this moment, we just have to live with it. In this complete decentralized environment, we cannot expect a perfect solution for every problem in short time frame itself. We must give enough time for everything so that solutions will be followed by many of this community then it will become a general practice. Market manipulation will not be an exception from that, hence we can expect some great solution for that in coming days.

A lot of people talk about this, I think that just because people would not talk about it, because there are traders who assure people that the market is manipulating and will continue to do it.
