For users from the Russian locale, there is a great guide on how to sign a message. The instruction contain information about different wallets at once.
You can find it at this link.

It seems like a nice initiative but I just read about dust attacks, isn't it unsafe to post addresses here and there so that people associate the address with your username?
If the idea is to be anonymous, why publish addresses?

I know how to sign from an address, I have Electrum installed and I don't need merit. I have enough and I can't even spend them all.

It is a good minor challenge to help them rank up and to force them learning and practicing the most basic and important feature of Bitcoin wallet. To do this they also have to learn, know and practice to use a non-custodial wallet.  Cheesy

Such the sign message can be used to recover accounts (of course it needs more evidence but a signed message from old wallet makes sense to help recovery progress).

Hey Newbies (& Jr Members)! I want to give you the opportunity to earn some merit by using your Bitcoin client (or whatever you use). There is a great guide linked below showing you how to sign a message. If you can sign a message from your Bitcoin address with your bitcointalk username, post it here and I will send you merit. Enjoy!

Example:
Quote
Address: 1BitcoinAddressGoesHere
Message: I’m OgNasty and I can sign a message.
Signature: 1BitcoinSignedMessageSignatureGoesHere
