Hello everyone! I wanted to clarify, now stance not will depend on number of posts? only on the number of merits.

Here's the answer to your query

In addition to activity, everyone now has a merit score, and you need both a certain activity level and a certain merit score in order to reach higher member ranks.

So that means Merits is NOT the only requirement to rank-up. That will be Post's, Activity AND Merits. You need to have quality post's that will take the attention of people with enough sMerits to give away or those sMerits source. So regardless of how many post's you made, if you don't get Merits, you dont rank up.

If these users don't need anything else and just want to hang out in the alt sections they can still do that without merits. Nobody is getting banned for not having merits.

But I have a feeling that they do need something else... am I right?
Generally others takes ranks as measure of how trustable the person is, its impact their ability to conduct certain trades at marketplace and also in their general interaction with other as higher rank members which usually regarded higher rank member as more trustable and more likely to not doing something that breach the forum rules.

I see that whenever low rank member open a topic he will be bombarded with abusive response, get ignored and in some cases get red trust from higher rank member no matter how good his suggestion is, but when high ranking member open a topic which already opened by others and suggest something that totally useless and impractical, I see that everyone just agreeing to it just because they see it is posted by high ranking member. When low rank members disagree, they get bashed.

So there is reason in part of lower rank members to want to rank up.

Why don't just remove ranking system and merit system all together if its serve no purpose and will not prevent anyone from posting or whatever, since with or without rank and merit everyone still can post anything they want its just the same as don't have it at all. It will free up resources and also probably make the software more faster and responsive without all that rank and merit complexity & logic

You get merit points when someone sends you some for one of your posts. Additionally, when someone sends you merit points, half of those points can be sent by you to other people.

Certain users are designated as "merit sources". They can create new merit out of nothing, up to a limited number per month (which differs per source). I will not be posting a definitive list of merit sources (so that people don't bug them too much), though you'll soon figure out who they are if you pay attention.

There is currently no such thing as a "demerit". I'm hoping that the positive merits alone will be fine. I could add demerits pretty easily later on if necessary, though.

I'm hoping that this system will increase post quality by:
 - Forcing people to post high-quality stuff in order to rank up. If you just post garbage, you will never get even 1 merit point, and you will therefore never be able to put links in your signature, etc.
 - Highlighting good posts with the "Merited by" line.

While we will not be directly moderating this, I encourage people to give merit to posts that are objectively high-quality, not just posts that you agree with.

Do not beg for merit excessively.

Useful infographics

Forum users have helpfully created some infographics to explain the merit system:
paxmao's infographic
ibminer's infographic
8Habits's infographic
JetSet11's infographic
zentdex's infographic
alia_armelle's infographic

If you want to be a merit source:

 1. Be a somewhat established member.
 2. Collect TEN posts written in the last couple of months by other people that have not received nearly enough merit for how good they are, and post quotes for them all in a new Meta thread. The point of this is to demonstrate your ability to give out merit usefully.
 3. We will take a look at your history and maybe make you a source.

I am especially eager to have merit sources in sub-communities such as the local sections.

Trivia:

For current members, your initial merit score is equal to the minimum required to your rank. Of that, a certain amount (less than the usual half) is spendable. The spendable amount was calculated based on your current rank and the number of activity points you earned in the last year. A Legendary member who hasn't posted in the last year would still be Legendary, but would not have any spendable merit.

If someone sends you 1 merit, the 0.5 sMerit is not wasted; it is just not shown until you get another merit point.

There are stats here, and you can find someone's merit summary by clicking the "merit" link on their profile.

a very useful science. this is like a stream of water that can not be stopped.

I was wondering if my 1 merit stock forever. When my activity become 60 and my merit is only well I will not rank up. I've been having some constructive post but I didn't receive any merit that's now I am bored to have a qualified post for merit because even it is useful there's no merit that been given to me.
Tengo una duda:
Un usuario relativamente nuevo, cuantos post puede hacer en un día?
You should speak in english language so that anyone will understand. Only local board allow you to speak with your languange.

[...] merit points that can be earned by helping others or creating interesting topics.
It's a lie. To earn merit points you have to do anything, that merit sources likes. As we know, usual users (especially newbies) are not merit sources, so, doing anything which helping them is absolutely pointless.

Are you saying that merit sources would only send merits for something that directly affects them? Doesn't make any sense.

My impression is that most of high rank users don't check frequently the altcoins sections nor local boards. [...]
But most of new users likes these sections and they don't need anything else on this forum. As i mentioned earlier, merit system is unfair to new users and stupid.

If these users don't need anything else and just want to hang out in the alt sections they can still do that without merits. Nobody is getting banned for not having merits.

Really? I never got one sMerit back ... or will this happen 30 days after I've sent ALL of my sMerit? I thought we don't ever get sMerit back automatically.
I was referring to the merit sources. If you're not a merit source you won't get your sMerit back.

I think it's daily.
Isn't he talking about the sMerit given to merit sources?
The source sMerit will come back in 30 days after its spending date. If you sent 5 source sMerit on 18 March, you should receive 5 source sMerit again on 18 April. So if you spent it daily during the previous month then you'll receive it every day in the next month.

All they can do is buy some merit points from members who are selling them. Such deals might be happening outside the forum and mods will not be able to catch all those deals. However, this will automatically decrease with time. After few months, the default merits of all the members will be spent and thus they will not be able to sell their merit points.
Then we will see merit coming from merit sources mainly and it is not possible to bribe merit sources to give merit points for money as they are established members.
Moderators can not know where they make their deals, but all evidence will be shown up in their merit histories. What do you think if low quality, one line threads received so many merits (10, 20, or 50 merit points)? It is really easy to find. Moderators will have solution for such merit abused cases. Don't worry, keep doing what you should and have to do to rank up (keep writing high-qualitied posts).

...who wants to profit by creating multiple accounts and selling to people who are desperate and lazy.

New accounts don't have any merit/Smerit so multiple accounts is not possible, but I am pretty sure they will find some way to cheat the system.

This is an enlightening information regarding the usefulness of the merit system. This will really make Bitcointalk the top reliable source for cryptocurrency information and knowledge. This is a free platform so it is better this way to remove and filter out scammers who wants to profit by creating multiple accounts and selling to people who are desperate and lazy.

For normal people who don´t have enough time to be 24 hours here looks unattainable scale a rank.

No one asked you to be here 24 hours a day. All you need to rank up is at least 14 posts per period = 2 weeks so mathematically it returns to be 1 post a day, also you need merit points that can be earned by helping others or creating interesting topics.

also you need merit points that can be earned by helping others or creating interesting topics.

That's how it should work but in reality it doesn't... at least for now while the merit-system is relatively new.

[GUIDE] Exporting your private-key from ImToken, Jaxx, Eidoo and Parity

[GUIDE] How to import your private-key from another wallet to MEW/MetaMask

[MyEtherWallet] Creating a (new) keystore-file using your private-key

[SECURITY | GUIDE] How to protect your wallets and private keys >> 1 merit

[SECURITY] Generate your secure IOTA-Seed without using insecure online-generators

I don't really care about merit but writing those guides was time-consuming and the return was 1 merit... Whatever... Hopefully there were still some people reading it at least.
Would have preferred some kind of reputation-system.

Alright, I gave you some merits and it is true that many many threads/posts are not recognized but thankfully we have threads here or in the ''service'' section where you can post your thread/post that you think deserves merits like you did here.

Like this one: https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/joeljantsens-merit-distribution-thread-newbies-welcome-2971165
Although this one is a bit specific.

There is even a ''signature campaign'' for merits: https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/joes-signatureless-challenge-archives-3055616

i gave you a merit on one of your guides.

yeah it can be a drag when you put time and effort into a guide or post on a very specific subject that may not attract a large number of readers, and thus get overlooked by readers that have merits to send. but as merit sources that tend to hang in particular forums are added hopefully this should even out over time as smerits are spread out to people in those sections of the forum.

then again hopefully people dont just try to write only "merit worthy" posts and then eagerly await for merits roll in. not every great post will receive merit.

as of this point ive seen lots of posts i think are worthy of merits that have not had any. for me "merit worthy" is a constantly evolving target: kinda depends on how helpful to my particular interests it was, how many smerits i have at the time, my mood, rank of the poster, how much effort i think the poster made, phase of the moon, etc. standards vary wildly, so trying to constantly write to a particular standard hoping to get merits is gonna be a rough ride.

Hello. Guys tell me please, where should I write constructive messages for getting merit? I mean In which threads?

HI, you should write in all threads. There is no trick with right thread. You can get merit both for useful info, or for the post that merit owner counts as good. You can even get merit for a joke.
Mostly those mega threads are not noticeable by smerit source members here in the forum, try to look at in the service section there some thread there giving a chance to have smerit those newbie accounts or here in meta sections just do post that helpful to the forum.
Or just reporting other members here that violated the rules of the forum.
Joel_Jantsen giving smerit if you have reported those abusers in this forum, look at this https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/joeljantsens-merit-distribution-thread-newbies-welcome-2971165
