So from now on, if I want to become a Senior Member I need other people to send me 250 Merit point?
Plus 240 activities?
Yes, I think that is what Theymos wanted from users. I am a little bit confuse and worried about that new rules for ranking too. I think only Hero and Legendary members ready to give others their merits as rewards for good, high-qualitied posts. With the new rules related to merit counts, it might be really hard to be upgraded to higher ranking levels.

It seems to be hard to get merits from others. I think it is simply because users should keep merits for themselves in order to be ranked up. Quite hard to get rewarded merits, I guess.
You didnt understand. When someone gives you Merit, they lose sMerit, which is only used to be sent to others and has no purpose besides that.
Hoarding my sMerit doesnt give me any benefit. Likewise, I dont lose any of my Merit (defining my rank) when sending Merit to others, as sMerit are used for that.

You have Merits, those you cannot send.
You also have sMerits, those you can only send, they have no other purpose.

When someone gives Merit to you they lose sMerit of the amount transfered and you gain Merit as well as sMerit (which in case you can send again).

Example: Should I send 10 Merit to you for a post, my sMerit would decrease by 10.
Your Merit would increase by 10 and your sMerit would increase by 5.

Merits are exclusively earned, but the sMerit part you also get keeps the circulation flowing.

(Ignoring merit sources here, for the sake of making an easy example.)

If so, what if selling/ buying merits, how to prevent this?
Banhammer to the face.

I respectfully disagree with the first part. Someone who is a week away from becoming a legendary member, for example, will now have to compete for the same 500 Merit points as someone who just became a hero member, in order to reach the legendary member status.
I did start with 500 Cry

Third, there should (personal opinion) be a fairer distribution of initial Merit than just the current forum level. Seems unfair otherwise, since there is a huge variation already just within a forum level. Perhaps a combination of current activity, time on the forum, how long the account has been in the current level, and other relevant variables.
The distribution of merit was only to provide the absolute minimum for people to have the rank that they currently have. Since merit isn't actually used for anything than determining that, I think this is fine. What matters more is the distribution of sMerit, the stuff that people actually give away. For that, the formula was based on both rank and activity in the past year.
I respectfully disagree with the first part. Someone who is a week away from becoming a legendary member, for example, will now have to compete for the same 500 Merit points as someone who just became a hero member, in order to reach the legendary member status. It is this distribution that seems unfair. At the very least, I'd distribute Merit based on Activity numerical values in a stepped manner, e.g. 500-700 activity = 600 Merit, 700-900 activity = 800 Merit, etc. or something along those lines. The bands for activity are too wide, in my opinion.

With this new function, i think that only member that are already member rank or higher before today get Merit point because it's free one time Merit point. and the other with lower rank will never get enough Merit point to up level.

From where I stand I'm equally likely to merit a noob or a legendary... as long as the post is worth it.

What will happen if use all the sMerit I have? Do I get more?

0.5 for each merit you get.

yeah a new function and you got 1000 Merit point without doing anything. cool

Don’t feel bad, Bruce Wagner has 250 merit, cablepair has 500 merit, cypherdoc has 1000 merit, MagicalTux (aka Mark Karpeles) has 500 merit, Inaba (aka EclipseMC, Butterfly Labs, his trust rating is the worst I’ve ever seen -9999: -15 / +4p) has 1000 merit.

I don’t think it matters what your merit is unless you want to jump ranks and be able to make signature money. This might help the mods out by cutting down on the meaningless posts aimed only at post count. Hopefully “merit” will succeed where “activity” failed miserably. It will be interesting to see how Merit is gamed. I can definitely see account sales increasing now.

Press your middle mouse button when trying to open a link to open it in a new window. Problem solved. Now you should have given me 200 merit. Tongue

Watching.

The middle mouse button only functions on whatever you previously set it up to do. For instance my middle mouse button is set to backward, like previous page, previous folder, etc.

I think merit points should only stay if the post was deleted by a moderator, or the owner of a self moderated topic. If the post is deleted by the user, the sMerits should return to the person who gave the merits. If merit selling/trading was to get popular, it would be fairly easy to hide who you bought the merit from or traded with, as you could make a temp post, wait for them to "pay" the merit, and then delete it, hiding all traces of the "trade" from the general public. Thoughts?

I don't think it works like that.
The merit point will still show on your profile along with the username that gave it to you, just the link with the reference will point to an invalid post.
Lutpin was about to to test this...

I can only view my own merit page. I don't think those who buy merit are going to rat themselves out, as it would ruin the entire point.

The merit page should indeed be public like the trust page:

I think only way to up Full member rank for you now is that buying Merit points  Grin
Buying merit is prohibited and will get you banned.

If not, may be next year 2019 you will have enough 100 Merit points
Or you can not shitpost and instead make quality posts. You'll get merit if your posts are quality.
I think that Merit points trade will surely happen. Maybe it'll not be public

There should be a public list of all merits given/received by a user, like the trust page.

I was thinking the same thing, but as Darkstar said if they delete the post/thread then what record would there be to look at other than just the +X amount? If it links a deleted post, it just won't be there to look at and observe. Unless there is a safe way to utilize archives without squandering forum security.

Yes, not seeing the target post is problematic, but if someone has a lot of merits for deleted posts - that would be suspicious in itself. Like spammy trust ratings with no reference.

But is there is any way we can see the user's merit page like we do with the trust feedbacks?

How can someone like Lauda or Vod see if the user is using alts to give himself merit after he deletes his posts? (so they can neg trust him)

Edit:
theymos need to make a public list of sent and received merit of a user, like a trust summary. This will easily solve that problem.

I will do this in the near future, maybe tomorrow. Also top merited posts/topics/users.

I see your point, but from Novice to Jr Member to Member, your Merit requirement is only 10 which is too easy to achieve if you're not a shitposter.

But to those who are a week or less to rank up, the timing is bad.
Me for example, I'm 5 days short of becoming a full member,
I got the default 10 merit because of my rank, now I need 90 more to rank up, that's the rock bottom.

Well, I'm confident with my activities.
Ranking up won't take that long.

I suggest additionally enter a negative Antimerit. To obtain a new rank, the Antimerit must not exceed 10% of all messages.
This will help self-cleaning the forum from spam messages - users will start deleting their bad messages.
Antimerit/demerit is very bad idea - it will punish people who have non-stardard point of view! Many people are fed up with "political correctness" imposed by government and stereotypes in society, so they don't want to see it on this forum!

You really don't get it, do you?

The whole point of merit is for establishing a requirement to obtain a rank. Those users you are complaining about who got merit "for free" only get the merit because they were active members of this forum for years. The only reason they get merit is so that they have enough to meet the new requirements for rank. Those members get the minimum requirement for their rank and will still need to earn merit to rank up, just like everyone else.

Having the merit does not give them any special privileges or powers that they didn't already have. It is literally only there to establish their rank.

Who can send Merit , anyone or higher rank people?
I think that anyone that has Merit points can send it.
No, you need sMerit to send. Merit cant be transfered, it is forever tied to your account.
(First reply, explanation for tl;dr persons: https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/m.28856606)

Sure, and they have big motivation give it to some newbie and do not sell it for someone who pay, especially in our local tear.
Sadly, I am not allowed to sell any of my sMerit and source merit.

I'm at 966 activity, well in the upper part of the window for legendary.
I got 500 merit, people with less activity than me got 1000 merit because they hit legendary by chance, sooner than I did.
500 merit. not 10, not 90, 500.
