yeah a new function and you got 1000 Merit point without doing anything. cool

It's useless to me. I can't rank up higher than Legendary.

Who can send Merit , anyone or higher rank people?

Anyone who earns it. Initially only higher ranks got a bonus but going forward anyone can earn it for quality posts.

I am confused about the merit system about merit sources part so, you can be a merit source by just collecting 10 high quality helpful posts doesn't received enough merits and post it in meta section or no? And another thing how about account farmers? They will just use their high ranked account to send merits to their alts just to rank up and sold it or use it to spam DT members must be aware of this.

I think merit points should only stay if the post was deleted by a moderator, or the owner of a self moderated topic. If the post is deleted by the user, the sMerits should return to the person who gave the merits. If merit selling/trading was to get popular, it would be fairly easy to hide who you bought the merit from or traded with, as you could make a temp post, wait for them to "pay" the merit, and then delete it, hiding all traces of the "trade" from the general public. Thoughts?

I don't think it works like that.
The merit point will still show on your profile along with the username that gave it to you, just the link with the reference will point to an invalid post.
Lutpin was about to to test this...

The merit page should indeed be public like the trust page:

There should be a public list of all merits given/received by a user, like the trust page.

I was thinking the same thing, but as Darkstar said if they delete the post/thread then what record would there be to look at other than just the +X amount? If it links a deleted post, it just won't be there to look at and observe. Unless there is a safe way to utilize archives without squandering forum security.

While we communicate in English, this isnt the only language we might speak. I just gave out some Merit in my local section.
I would suspect theymos also has placed some merit sources in the local sections (eg the mods of those sections) to avoid this problematic.

This answers my question before, I was unsure how many high-ranking users were actually bi-lingual or non-English speaking as I never visit those boards being only able to speak English, currently. So then they won't be excluded, so long as they speak a language that is shared significantly enough around here.

Would be interested to see the demographics on which languages offer an opportunity to rank up and at which speed.

If users were not given the minimum amount to maintain their rank everyone would be a newbie as of today. That would make no sense and do good for nobody.

Why Hero Member, Legendary  and Sr. Member got a lot of Merit points without doing anythings. It's not fair. Merit is a new function and it must be fair with all member.

I don't know if this is an intended consequence, but it would seem that this excludes almost any non-English speaker from higher ranks. Am I incorrect to see this as a little bit unfortunate?

Should not be the case though. If anyone, genuinely tries to convey something constructive and meaningful in a discussion, they should be rewarded in my opinion. Also, there's no point hoarding sMerit.

Obviously if nobody can understand what you are saying there is no reason for you to merit, but there is many (I assume) that deserve merit in other languages, and a very significant minority of our community are non-English speakers.

They can credit merits in local boards as well.

Let me know if I am looking at this incorrectly, because I very well could be misunderstanding the current situation in the "Local" boards, how they are "valued" by our lovely staff, etc.

Depends on how active a local board is. Some are active like the rest while some are dormant.

Doesn't matter, since merits are publicly visible. After quite some time, we will be getting used to knowing the accounts that are selected as "merit sources".

What will happen if use all the sMerit I have? Do I get more?

Then you'll have no more sMerit. No. The only way to get sMerit is when someone sends you merit. For every 1 merit that you receive, you'll also get 0.5 sMerit.

With this new function, i think that only member that are already member rank or higher before today get Merit point because it's free one time Merit point. and the other with lower rank will never get enough Merit point to up level.

From where I stand I'm equally likely to merit a noob or a legendary... as long as the post is worth it.

What will happen if use all the sMerit I have? Do I get more?

0.5 for each merit you get.

Yes, you get more sMerits if you are either given the status of a merit source, or if you are given normal merits. For every merit that you are given, you get half a sMerit.

I suggest additionally enter a negative Antimerit. To obtain a new rank, the Antimerit must not exceed 10% of all messages.
This will help self-cleaning the forum from spam messages - users will start deleting their bad messages.

But I never get merit (yes I wanna higher rank) from forum participants
This system was introduced 4 hours ago. I believe the majority of users on this forum "never" got Merit. This is fresh off the shelf, as new as it could be.
Give it some time, keep writing good posts in the future, and you will get your Merit.

hero is more advantageous to negotiate and give merits to each other for boosting accounts.
The people with the most sMerit right now are legendaries.
They have no incentive to "boost" or "negoiate", as they already have reached the highest possible rank, their Merit has no influence, no matter how much they collect.
Thus they can give out Merit solely on a basis of post quality, and dont have to account for the rank of the user who wrote a post they reward with Merit.

Just thought of another one; if a post has merit and is then deleted, are those issued merits lost?
We can quickly test that, delete your post, I gave you merit.

correct me if i am wrong please

from now on those farmed potential accounts (with minimum post history) has no value right they are all same newbie account based on new merit system

if that so thats realy nice feature

True, all those accounts with high "potential activity" are now worthless because activity is not the only requirement to rank up anymore. I really love this update from theymos. This is a smart way to combat spammer compared to other hardcore method like eliminating signature completely.

I see many quality post here but didn't have a merit. As I can say the problem will be the members who are not participating the purpose of the merit system.

People need to be generous and not hoarding their sMerit for this system to work. Several improvements may be needed in the future to balance out the merit ecosystem. Let's hope this system will work nicely.

Just thought of another one; if a post has merit and is then deleted, are those issued merits lost?

No.

How about if the post merited is deleted? Will the merit count? Or erased too? Because somebody could just use merit for unreasonable purpose.

The merit is not undone if the post is deleted.

Nice !!!! Never thought of that. I bet there are a lot of account farmers calling 911 reading this Tongue
Hopefully one of them is QS.
