Third, there should (personal opinion) be a fairer distribution of initial Merit than just the current forum level. Seems unfair otherwise, since there is a huge variation already just within a forum level. Perhaps a combination of current activity, time on the forum, how long the account has been in the current level, and other relevant variables.
The distribution of merit was only to provide the absolute minimum for people to have the rank that they currently have. Since merit isn't actually used for anything than determining that, I think this is fine. What matters more is the distribution of sMerit, the stuff that people actually give away. For that, the formula was based on both rank and activity in the past year.

Transition from Member to full member will be very hard to reach

Most of the members will be active just to reach their rank ups. But, is it best if the TRUSTED signature campaign managers will be having a greatest number of merit points to be given to TRUSTED poster since they are checking also the quality of post in each applicant? Just to add an opinion,  because this can also help the managers on selecting their applicants even without checking their post.

So with this merit system what is the expected time to get to legendary?
It will still depend on the quality of your post mate. It would really enumerate the post from reports from a bounty campaigns like twitter and facebook.

The intention here is to reduce spam and promote high quality content that others will enjoy and therefore give merit to. However, we're in cryptoland, so let's talk economic incentives.

Merit is valuable for 'leveling up'. A higher rank in this forum is valuable both indirectly (respect of the community, standing among peers) and directly (bounties that reward you for being a higher ranked member, such as signature bounty). If it is valuable, there will be a market for it. This might defeat the purpose of the system, which is aimed to improve quality.

First, I think theymos should clarify whether it is against the forum rules to 'sell' merit or not. It should be. At the very least, it will discourage the more honest members, who don't want their account banned due to violation of the rules.

Second, the forum should institute a rule against threads and posts selling or asking for Merit. This would be similar to the spamming/begging rules. This should cut down on some of the more blatant trading of Merit that will invariably take place.

Third, there should (personal opinion) be a fairer distribution of initial Merit than just the current forum level. Seems unfair otherwise, since there is a huge variation already just within a forum level. Perhaps a combination of current activity, time on the forum, how long the account has been in the current level, and other relevant variables.

I think Merit can be a step in the right direction for this forum.

So with this merit system what is the expected time to get to legendary? Just to make it completely obvious .. may I have some merits? I seem to need alot to get to the next level.

Begging for merits is not the way to go. If demerits were added, you'd probably get those instead. It's currently hard to tell how long it will take, but if you contribute, and not spam, it wouldn't be unreasonable to get 1000 merits in over 2 years. I think the expected time for Legendary is the more or less the same.

Is there a place we can see the posts we've earned merit from?
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=merit

Interesting.  Are merits meant to be traded or exclusively earned?
You have Merits, those you cannot send.
You also have sMerits, those you can only send, they have no other purpose.

When someone gives merit to you they lose sMerit of the amount transfered and you gain Merit as well as sMerit (which in case you can send again).

Eg should I send 10 Merit to you for a post, my sMerit would decrease by 10.
Your merit would increase by 10 and your sMerit would increase by 5.

The simplest explanation so far, and far most easy to understand. Thank you Luptin. I'll send this 1 Merit Cheesy

I am already seeing what will happen here.
I have read until the last page and some gave good questions that requires answers to be cleared and ideas and yet no merit points was given to them.

It should not just be quality posts but also quality questions.

Lets face it theymos did not complete the details about merits.

Well then, good luck to us.
This is just the first day though.

Is it allowed to ask for Merits?
For example, I created a long post which I think is of quality and then at the end of my post I say please merit me if you think I am helpful etc. etc... Just like a youtuber asking for likes & subscribers at the end of their video.

Merits should be earned. If it really is a quality and helpful post, people should merit you without needing to be reminded. I don't think it's against the rules, but I doubt it will help you gain merit.

So negative trust user have their smerit too? I think that will be another problem. Because, they can use it to troll or give to their alt account. They can simply send all of their merit to the random member and that member will be accused that it is their alts. However, they can send their merit to their alt and act like that they do it for troll. DT members should be more alert for the negative trust account.

It would be very obvious if a negative trusted user gave a random Newbie 50 merits.

You already know what's mean waiting (for years) to be a legendary here Wink
I wouldn't give much attention to this system if I was but now it is frustrating to wait even longer.
Well like Lutpin said, life is unfair  Undecided

Btw, can we have a link to the merit like "patrol" or maybe in our profile like "trust"? (i didn't find anything except the direct link https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=merit)

I expect merit to tend toward scarcity as time goes on, but when it gets too scarce, I'll have to add more merit sources or give the existing sources more free sMerit. The goal will be to avoid people from feeling like getting merit is virtually impossible, but also to avoid a scenario where everyone is always maxing out the limits because 1 merit is ~worthless.

Each source has a different limit per 30 days. The current average is 185, and in total up to 8125 merit could be created per month.

Actually I have been legendary for a few weeks already now. Strange you see my rank as hero.

edit; I see my rank as hero as well now, I ranked down?
edit2; Seems to be back to normal.

You were oscillating between Hero and Legendary; I fixed it.

Sure, it'll look somewhat centralized if only the most notable members of the forum are being given Merit but doesn't that incentivize higher-quality posting?

Just to make me sure nobody gets the wrong idea....

If I would have 2 or 3 points to give a month, let's say, probably I would give them all to DannyHamilton for his explanations. I wound't waste a single one on some jr member and I certainly doubt a jr member might be able to compete in quality with DH.
Now if I had 100....I might spare a buck for somebody really trying

BTW, I wonder if the merit will reduce when give to other people
First reply, explanation for those that cant be bothered to read and understand the full OP.

You have Merits, those you cannot send.
You also have sMerits, those you can only send, they have no other purpose.

When someone gives Merit to you they lose sMerit of the amount transfered and you gain Merit as well as sMerit (which in case you can send again).

Example: Should I send 10 Merit to you for a post, my sMerit would decrease by 10.
Your Merit would increase by 10 and your sMerit would increase by 5.

Merits are exclusively earned, but the sMerit part you also get keeps the circulation flowing.

(Ignoring merit sources here, for the sake of making an easy example.)

Is it allowed to ask for Merits?
For example, I created a long post which I think is of quality and then at the end of my post I say please merit me if you think I am helpful etc. etc... Just like a youtuber asking for likes & subscribers at the end of their video.
This would likely decrease your chances to get merit.
Similar to how it is currently allowed to ask for trust, but people generally frown upon it, and many dont leave trust if asked for.

can you move the merit button to the left side of the quote(/edit/delete) buttons?
A good idea. Often-used functions should be placed in more accessible spots. Probably also the post number should be moved.

Greetings from 2100, the new forum software is nice.
I do hope it happens only then. Smiley New-style forum software is annoying. The current design is light on resources, compatible with older browsers, generally works without JavaScript, provides good information density.

The overall problem here is that professional spammers will utilize their network of spammers and finances to circumvent the merit system, whereas non-professional spammers will be stopped in their tracks.
I assume non-pro spammers are the large majority, so the new system still solves most of it.

How is decaying sMerit an incentive if there is no reward to sending or holding sMerit in the first place?
The reward is improved forum content.

Besides, what's the reward for clicking "Like" on Facebook? If anything, there's a larger penalty to that: letting Facebook and the potentially the world track your proclivities, linked to your real identity.

The minimum to credit should be 0.00000001 merit. At least with respect to Bitcoin.  Cheesy Cheesy
Lols, then we should have a maximum of 21 million merit points on this forum.
Once we reach that number no more points getting "mined".
Good idea. I suggest the forum creates a new coin just for that, directly linked to forum Merit points. Maybe fork Bitcoin? Call it Bitcoin Talk (BCT). Smiley

This thread should be stickied imo.
A lot of people will ask what's merit or  how to get merits point.

1 question to theymos, how if someone/people buying/selling merit points to ranked up faster?
I hope a permaban for that person/people.

can not agree any more. there will be member selling their points. BTW, I wonder if the merit will reduce when give to other people
If you read the thread you would realize that sMerit and Merit are not linked. Jesus. You're literally in the thread, how hard can it be to just open your eyes and turn to page one?
