I do not understand why it was impossible to start the day after the rank change? On my example - I had 5 days left, but now I need at least three more months ?! And there are a lot of such. No, it's wrong, I'm sorry.

same with me too, I will take very long to member to be able join some signature bounty

I have 966 activity and actmyname has 952. He is legendary and I am hero. He has 1000 merit, I had to start with 500.
Life is unfair, I know. But at least your taxes are free.
Poor you. I got it at <800 IIRC Smiley

Everyone is treated equally here. Perhaps some people were also 5 days left from ranking up. Perhaps they just ranked up. If you think you deserve some special treatment, that your rank should be "rounded up" then this is not the place for you.

Make some quality posts, yeah?

Now, most of the merit point will go of course to the oldest and wisest members on the forum (as it is normal)
To which they will distribute it to posts that they like and think are useful. The whole thing about sMerit is that it exponentially decays when passed from user to user. 50% of the Merit that you are given becomes sMerit that you can send... and I believe that the so-called "oldest and wisest members" would have enough time to send some Merit to some other members. Sure, it'll look somewhat centralized if only the most notable members of the forum are being given Merit but doesn't that incentivize higher-quality posting?

When i was check my Btt account i see 10 merit under activity ..

100 sMerit/Month is not unlimited; it is 100 sMerit per month. Merit sources are the only way for there to be an increasing amount of merit distrusted around the forum, in order to compensate for the necessary merit needed to rank up new accounts at a reasonable pace. Without a Merit source we would just be trading around merit until sMerit has depleted.

I am interested in the "It is not allowed for merit sources to sell their merit", as this implies it is "allowed" for other users to sell their merit.

I thought of unlimited as a source that will go on producing sMerit.
Yes, it is limited to 100 per month, 1200 per year , 120k a century but it will never dry out.

Ranks now matter more than they have recently, I don't understand why you hope that be to a mistake. Do you believe there are more than 14 members each month that are deserving of ranking themselves up to hero, based on the merit of their contributions?

The 14 hero members was the maximum with points concentrated. (Yeah I havent' taken into account the 1750 sMerit and the next 875 that gets created ...so on.... basically x2)

Now, most of the merit point will go of course to the oldest and wisest members on the forum (as it is normal) , so how much of it could go to new accounts? Probably 1-5%.

Those points might get too valuable, just as accounts did as you need 10 to be able to "work bitcointolk" or "do bytkoin". Leading to circles trading them.

But already Lutpin addressed the issue:

If everyone decides to not use this merit system because if he has no time or will to click the link, even if he likes so much one's post, everyone's rank will stop levelling?

Yes, however this is sort of like saying "If everyone stops using the trust system the nobody will gain trust ratings." While this is the case, it is a moot point, because it is not going to happen.

There are sources, and these people will continue to use the merit system even if they are the only ones doing so; this will of course monopolize merit in an unfortunate way, so it is in everyone's best interest to use the system as intended, rather than ignore it as if it were never mentioned.

This will makes ranks more valuable, disincentive spam and I highly doubt the 3-seconds it takes to merit someone will deter almost anyone. Are you that constrained for time?

Time is critical and when you're not a whale and have to partecipate and follow many stuff in order to gather coin dust, you tend to optimize the little time you have at disposal in order to not doing stuff that take you away time without giving some profit in return.

I don't see how and why someone who wouldn't even know me would give me some merit in order to make me rank up, so that maybe I'll take his spot in a signature bounty in the future and prevent him to join the very same signature bounty.

Also I foresee how users who know each others from long time will distribute merits among themselves even without proper well written posts. (I didn't read the rules accurately so maybe this is not possibile)

I hope this system will work out, but when you give power to users, it's a risk, there is always someone who will try to take advantage by cheat the system.

I usually go to the Beginners & Help forum, so that I can help newbies, I like it. But why I'll do this now? The newbies don't have sMerit to send me if they like my post, right?
To be nice? To help people? Not everything has to have some sort of measurable reward.
Yes. Yes. Or why do you post in beginners and help right now? Before the merit system?

But if you need more incentives than just helping others: you arent the only one reading beginners & help that isnt a newbie.
Good posts can be rewarded, even if they aren't directly related to you or helping you.
I can give merit as legendary to another person helping a newbie. The system stays the same, it's just different people rewarding your help.

You are right, anyone can read there and enjoy my answers. Smiley Than you for make me think different  Wink

Can you send sMerits with a value lower than 1? If you make a post and receive a merit now you have 0.5 sMerits can I send those sMerits to someone else? Or I need to wait to receive one more merit so I can send that sMerit?
You can only send an integer amount of sMerits. 0.5 sMerits won't show and you can't send that small amount.

Nice idea!!

But here is some suggestion that I will place. I would say making smerit limited to some extent to be sent to one user would be great. Something like max 10 can be sent to  one person.

Currently I think making no limit can be abused easily. Let's say someone has required activity to rank up but not required merit and one with enough smerit can send him but in return he would like to receive some BTC.

Now the question is who can send smerit that much? Say for example negative accounts (I would say locking smerit once one is handed negative would be great) or someone who is not interested in using forum anymore.

Or maybe I didn't get a hang of this new system....

All ranks below Legendary will need merit to level up, I believe very soon, merit can be a traceable thing and like bitcoin, it soon go to the moon. Heee

A merit system is a good thing, Always wanted to have a Feedback system on Bitcointalk forum, but shouldn't it be BACKWARDS? Instead of introducing merit system for Member rank and above, it would be way more better introducing a merit system for NEWBIE members, because as far as we've seen it's mostly Newbies post not so quality posts, so IF / when newbies want to up their ranks they'll have to earn a certain merit points. That will surely encourage them to post more and more quality posts, now people are just posting to up their ranks as soon as they joined, so of them are good quality, but some of them have no meaning at all.So a newbie to up their rank to Jr.Member not just 30 activity count from 1 and half months a merit system for their posts will be better though.

Full members and above are already kind of established and KNOWS how Bitcointalk staff / Moderators responds to low quality posts, so it would be more better If there's a merit system for newbie members as they are the ones should be more careful about not just to post up their ranks.

For other members a Feedback system is awesome, because some upper rank members post such valuable posts / comments but so far there was no way to give them a positive feedback.  but needing merits to up their ranks is kind of discouraging I guess.

If you catch someone sending Merit to a post which is pretty worthless (or not useful in context to the sender) then it can probably warrant some action i.e. tags on the sender's profile.

However, we must be careful, because this only links the poster's history to the sender and not vice versa (unless you are 100% sure). If we do not be cautious about this and immediately assume it's an A<->B linkage then people with negative trust can ruin accounts. It'll be like blackmail.
Account farming will still be prominent but it'll be harder. Much harder. And we can catch them in the act. They'll have to be forced to make high-quality posts to send Merit to (from pre-existing high-ranked accounts). But if they do that, then it'll need to be consistent. Which is good for the forum.

3. Going a bit further in time and we have 35 forum members getting 100 sMerit each a month, a total of 3500.
Some get more than that per month, some get less.

Also, the sMerit from merit sources does not accumulate nor does it go to the merit sources' own merit. Basically each merit source can give away only up to X amount every 30 days. If that X has not been spent in those 30 days, then the unspent sMerit are gone.

Read up, there is a limit.
50 Merit per user in a 30 day window.

You only have a limited amount of sMerit. And newbies start with 0 right now, we are in the privileged position to start with free sMerit due to having higher ranks at the time the system was introduced.

I saw the ones that gave theymos/OP merit points few minutes ago but I don't see it now. I continue to see the names on the other posts. Strange?

String too long, buffer overflow? Smiley

I think there should be an option for negative merit but more expensive than positive. E.g. 3 sMerits for one negative.

Hero with 1000 Merit instead of 500
He's eligible for legendary, so he gets 1000 merit.
Well, "eligible" is random
The user is a legendary member now, I assume they already were tagged as one when the initial merit score was calculated.

but it would definitely be too harsh to get just 500. I get it now
That's what I got  Cheesy

Actually I have been legendary for a few weeks already now. Strange you see my rank as hero.

edit; I see my rank as hero as well now, I ranked down?  Huh

You are legendary when I post this.

I have checked a lot of topics in the Bitcoin Discussion and Altcoins Discussion sections, but I didn't noticed any merits received there, although there are  merits received in this topic for "thank you" posts... So this is how the high-quality posts should look like? Unfortunately I can't agree.
It's the first day, this is new to all of us. Give it some time.
Some people are testing right now, simply trying to find out how it works, how to use it (on a mechanical level).
Give it some time, let the dust settle, everyone get used to the system, and then we can judge on how the system is used. Not now.
