It would be very hard for us now to rank up but we must adopt this great new system to maintain the quality here in forum.
We must be very fair in terms of giving merits, and I do hope this new system will works fine in the long run.

I cannot see that merit button people keep talking about. Is it because I'm a new member?
You dont have any merit/sMerit to give. Once you receive merit, and thus gain sMerit, you should see the button.
I assume it's hidden for those that can't use it anyway.

I already don't like the way clicking on +merit takes you away from the thread.  Can you please have it open in a new window?

Open in new windows or tabs was disabled long ago on this forum due to it being a security risk.

Meanwhile, some dude is tryin' to sell his sM for a million bucks: https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/this-is-the-official-sell-your-smerit-here-thread-ill-start-with-my-200-sm-2818511  Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

I'm very happy that things have started to happen, hopefully we can all stop bitching about account farming now (including me).
Thanks so much theymos, I'm looking forward to this becoming a forum I enjoy visiting again.
This is a first step in a right direction, I wonder if more steps are planned.
The problematic of farming new accounts should be contered with this change, but what about already farmed, high ranked shitposters?

There's been a bit of discussion about possible concepts that could be implemented today, and ecuamobi made a suggestion that was well responded.
Did you read the thread, and if so, what are your opinions on those suggestions, theymos?

Quoting over:

Another idea which could work, something like merging the SMAS list into the trust system:
  • On every profile, besides Trust, there's an option to mark user as spammer
  • This instantly makes that user's signature invisible for the user who marked him, or add him into the ignore list, to be decided
  • If the user who marked him is on DT1 or DT2; staff; or any other list to be decided, then the marked user losses the right to wear a signature. This way, it's not up to signature managers to allow them into a campaign or not. The forum would disable the signature for him
Some details should be discussed, but that would be the idea.

This might not be fair for new people, I don't know if others will ever consider to give merit to newbies. Guess I had to been registered here like 1year back to get some kind of "good" positions. Juniors and newbies are often treated poorly and seen as funny guys around, not taken seriously.

I should have created my account 2 years ago when I got into bitcoin... but eventually everyone will get there and rank better...

It would be nice to be able to see which of our posts was merited. Right now I can't seem to find a way to see that kind of info.

You can here:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=merit

Theymos should add this to the OP.
Something like....

  • Where can I check who gave me merit and my merit history?

This new features makes all users forcing to post more constructive/ quality post to make us able to ranked up.

But how many merits to be considered to be qualify for ranking up?

Also it is required to send all the merits to other users?

I have 500 merits as hero member. Does it mean this is minimum and I can't lose it?

Along with account sales, trust farming, cheating signature/bounty campaigns and all other shady activities I am sure we will see merit farming.
It won't change single thing about spamming:

Rank   Required activity   Required merit
Brand new   0                 0
Newbie   1                      0
Jr Member   30                0
Member   60                   10

Instead of spamming 30 days to reach junior member status we will see newbies spamming for 2-3 months until they reach member status and join  campaigns, and what will they do before they reach member status?
They will create more accounts, because they will need lots accounts to get merit points and rank up to higher ranks or they will just do "scratch my back and I'll scratch yours" with other "I need merit" users.
Don't see how merit will help against spam.

On side note can you update this https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=stats .

Lutpin answered this.

You can only give 50 merit to a user in a 30 day window.
Unless they have an alt account, they cannot give you 100 merit (right now).

So it will still take you 2 months to get that 100 merits that you need then some activity again to be a full member.
That will somehow make them weary of making too much accounts just so they could upgrade one.

So 5 months to have 250 merits and activities to be a Senior Member.
That will need a lot of good posting because those 10 Member ranks that he created lacks the smerit afterwards.

Now I am getting the idea of it.
It could somehow make one person focus on just one account instead of too many which post quality gets bad when his brain is too tired.  Grin

Thanks for the nice explanation Admin. Much appreciated! However now that you have given an weapon (sMerit) to the existing high level members, it will soon be treated like a commodity. I am sure, we will see it being traded secretly in exchange of money since merit point has now become mandatory to rank up. The merit system will be abused heavily.

How to handle this situation?

Edit- I have just noticed that my account has been downgraded from Legendary to Hero.

Edit 2- it again came back to Legendary level.

(Achievement guys, for real) As a Gamer Chick I dig this.
Not trying to be a dick here but what does you being a "Gamer Chick" have anything to do with this topic?  Why does every girl that games feel the need to announce it?

I'm a Gamer Boy feed me attention!

Sorry! I did not know that was a thing all gamer chicks wrote - I could of course just have written gamer - but I really do not have a dick. And being sexless in a forum is boring - I prefer to be held accountable  as woman. Since I am somewhat older I think chick was wrong of me. And for that I apologize.

Anyhow, it is achievements - as a gamer - I dig it.
That's fair enough I suppose.  The point I was trying to make was this: Dudes don't say things like "I'm a gamer boy/man", so why do girls feel the need to do it?  It doesn't need to be announced by either gender.  Not necessarily you, but there's a lot of girls out there that do it and it's real weird.  Gamer is genderless; it applies to both.  Nobody really cares if you're a man or woman on the internet, the only time other guys care if you're a woman is if they're going to be a creep about it.

Anyways I'm wayyyy off-topic here lol.  Just wanted to make my point.  (Sorry Theymos!)

As I understood, as newbie and jr. member you have no smerits. So that means that you have to be at least a member to be able to award a smerit. Correct me if I'm wrong.

For current members, your initial merit score is equal to the minimum required to your rank. Of that, a certain amount (less than the usual half) is spendable. The spendable amount was calculated based on your current rank and the number of activity points you earned in the last year. A Legendary member who hasn't posted in the last year would still be Legendary, but would not have any spendable merit.

As a user who went from Brand New to Full Member in 2017, should my sendable merit (sMerit) be equal to 6?

I like this, now we will see more constructive comments/posts on threads. It will be easier for bounty managers to determinate who is eligible for signature campaigns. I expect more comments in the local section of the forum.
What else to say, great job admin!
