Interesting. Are merits meant to be traded or exclusively earned?
From the original post, it appears that merit is to be exclusively earned. Unless of course, you pay a writer to write quality posts that others give merit to, in which case, indirectly, you'll be paying to get more merit 
This is quite a beautiful change. I can already see the spamming slowing down from this. What worries me the most is the post quality of the people who already have a high activity ranking that they got by spamming. I understand you might not want to put up a de-merit system, but perhaps merit points could be connected to other functionalities of the forums as well. For example, points should go down if a moderator takes down one of your posts for a reason related to spamming or non-constructive posts. I also believe stricter guidelines should be required for defining what a constructive post is. A post that answer's the OP's question should not be considered constructive if the answer has already been posted multiple times in the thread. A system such as this one would tie in well with merit.
Merit system is really a good idea but just my opinion, since this is not moderated, might as well add not a demerit but an objection to the merits given so that in case there will be some obvious merit manipulations, the community can contest and object on those merits.
To add to that, there will be a separate and dedicated page where when a certain post received a minimum number of objections to the merits given, the post will be automatically listed on that public dedicated page for final moderation - this way, the moderation is minimal and consolidated in one place and would be easy to decide for the designated moderator.
This is just my opinion though...

Nice idea but I think it should be a little easier to understand about this merit and smerit thing.

I think it's a good idea. But as there is merit, it must be Demerit as well. to simply make the difference between profiles, for avoiding spam
we would also like to have on the right of the page the option for merit and demerit without being forced to open another window (as was the case with -0 + 0)
And also want to know where is the place of newbie in this forum ?? It will be hard for some to develop their Rank, expect if there is someone who has an excess of merit, And wants to share ...

Hopefully this helps cut down on the spam a bit but I have a feeling the bots will try none the less to get around it somehow. Kudos on the addition though. Something had to be done, this forum is honestly one of the worst I've been on in terms post quality. There is a lot of great information, but there is also a TON of garbage to sift through to get to that information from a daily usage perspective.

I think this is a good idea but I'm not sure if this is going to be exploited as well. Theymos, Is this your solution to the rampaging red trust feedback issue given by dt members? So does that mean no more red trust for those post that they judge as no quality?

If you're not just messing with my head then you must've misunderstood what I was asking about. I was referring to the negative sMerit I had sent out as a test, not my Trust/feedback; that being said I also only have 1-negative trust-rating and it is from a random with no reference, rhyme or reason as far as I can tell.
At any rate, Theymos has fixed my merit discrepencies and I'm back in the game same as anybody else. Thanks for being responsive, Theymos. Gleb, do I have more than that single negative trust that I am not seeing, or did the joke go over my head?
would be nice in future to give merit in the same window, not in new, but i guess its ok for now, while its new. we will test this stuff for couple weeks and i guess will be found some mistakes or we could improve this together. idea is great, hope people will use it in the right way

Open in new windows or tabs was disabled long ago on this forum due to it being a security risk.

I would actually like to see the number of required merit increased double or triple in order to rank up. The users have 35 weeks to hit sr member and 70 weeks to hit here, so to encourage therm to make more quality posts by needing a high # of merit would be great
It could also possibly be interesting to fiddle with consequences if someone were to get negative merit (once implemented). Perhaps ranks could be lost, or privileges such as signature styling/avatars or something similar.

Maybe remove the icons for normal topic, hot topic and very hot topic and replace them with icons based on merit score given in a thread?A thread having 100+ replies (very hot topic right now) isn't a good thing anymore (I assume it used to be back in the days).
Could have normal topic, quality topic and high quality topic, with increasing merit score.
And yes, I know that can be tampered with, but it at least provides a little more value than than the currently reply based ranking.

Oo 5 days before "Full Member", i'm shocked. But in any case this is a fair rank system and i support it. Hope i will receive my "Full" soon )
Nothing to worry if you make a quality post, but I as can see on your history post you might be have a hard time to reach that level.
This new system basically to have a quality post for every user but people might make ways just to get lots of merits, we will see this in the long run.
