What about those people who demerited someone? They have already added the smerits to their balances.
Fixed already.

It's actually gone, those are just cached.

I am definitely for all improvements to the forum and getting rid of spam posts.  I just wish it started after the next rank up period as I was set to become a member with activity of 60.  Thanks again for trying to make this a better system.
Just do quality posts. It's easy man! Smiley

I have 500 merits as hero member. Does it mean this is minimum and I can't lose it?
Yes, as no one can demerit you (for now).

Along with account sales, trust farming, cheating signature/bounty campaigns and all other shady activities I am sure we will see merit farming.
It won't change single thing about spamming:

Rank   Required activity   Required merit
Brand new   0                 0
Newbie   1                      0
Jr Member   30                0
Member   60                   10

Instead of spamming 30 days to reach junior member status we will see newbies spamming for 2-3 months until they reach member status and join  campaigns, and what will they do before they reach member status?
They will create more accounts, because they will need lots accounts to get merit points and rank up to higher ranks or they will just do "scratch my back and I'll scratch yours" with other "I need merit" users.
Don't see how merit will help against spam.

On side note can you update this https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=stats .

The minimum to credit should be 0.00000001 merit. At least with respect to Bitcoin.  Cheesy Cheesy

Lols, then we should have a maximum of 21 million merit points on this forum.
Once we reach that number no more points getting "mined".

I'm not sure I fully understand this new system. The only way to get merit is if someone merits one of your posts? The sMerits are not renewed after sometime? If that's the case and the only way for new merits to enter the circulation is from the sources, atleast until things balance out, people won't easily spend their merits and we will see a large portion of merits comes from the sources themselves. That might be unfair for people who post in less popular sections of the forum. Take for example the local boards, if there is no source that regularly reads there, people will get less merits for their posts, even if they are great posts. This will make the less populated sections even more abandoned.

Here is one idea, merit points as a reward for reporting spam posts/accounts.

I'm sure part of the criteria Theymos accepts for making people merit sources, is the proper reporting of posts.

Did you forget to limit the merit you can send to positive numbers?

Whoops, that's a bit embarrassing... I fixed it.
A few leftovers from the bug:

https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/m.28857781 (negative merit)
https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/m.28857729 (zero value merit)
https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/m.28857682 (negative merit)

Oh so it's a bug, ok  Cheesy

This might not be fair for new people, I don't know if others will ever consider to give merit to newbies. Guess I had to been registered here like 1year back to get some kind of "good" positions. Juniors and newbies are often treated poorly.
It's perfectly fair to new people.  It just means that in order for you to rank up or earn Merit, you have to write high-quality posts, rather than just spam a bunch of worthless stuff.  You're not being treated poorly; everyone has to write high-quality posts.

As a newbie on this forum this is the best thing that has happened to me. Instead of being classified as one of the many account boosters I can gain merits! (Achievement guys, for real) As a Gamer Chick I dig this.  Should be some sort of negative merit aswell though. Scouting through the first page of almost any part of the forum it is difficult to separate the real posts from the shitposts.

If it was possible to grey out posts with negative merit and highlight those with received merit or a sub-post with received merit, that would leave other threads neutral and up to you as a reader to decide if it is worth reading or not.
Not trying to be a dick here but what does you being a "Gamer Chick" have anything to do with this topic?  Why does every girl that games feel the need to announce it?

It seems theymos fixed the negative bug already, or at least temporarily; it now gives a message of "Invalid Amount", same if you try to give someone "0" merit.

That could've gotten dicey real quick, what will be done to the merit that was gained (regardless of the insignificant amount) through this method? I'm sure there are a handful of lower-rank members that already have ghastly amounts of merit.

I assume, the 50 limit doesn't apply here and I could neg. you by a few thousands.
Update: Tested. There is no limit on the negative numbers. Sorry Luptin. Cheesy

But...but...but...this is going to screw things up for all the Jr member accounts and their airdrops, and their prospects for a long and prosperous career of typing "Joined, good project" to rank up and get paid.

This system is another example of doing something instead of nothing.  We'll see if it helps.

I'm afraid, some bad people or jealous one use "demerit function" in some situations (disagree with a bounty manager, revenge ..).

So maybe we should only keep Merit ?
